For finely detailed 28–32 mm figures, choose an MSLA resin printer. The best-balanced pick in the 2025 lineup was the ELEGOO Saturn 4 Ultra 12K: its 19 × 24 µm XY resolution, roomy plate, tilt-release system and automated monitoring made it a versatile choice for individual models and batches. If you print only a few figures or have little workspace, a smaller Mars-class printer is more sensible. For terrain, trays and scenery, FDM is usually the better tool. Resin’s detail comes with a real trade-off: ventilation, protective equipment, washing, curing and careful waste handling are part of the purchase, not optional extras.

This guide evaluates the models in the title’s 2025 context. Product lineups and availability change; ELEGOO’s Saturn 4 Ultra 16K listing is a later refresh, not a 2025 recommendation. Check current manufacturer listings before buying.

Quick picks

Need Pick Why Not for you if…
One versatile resin printer ELEGOO Saturn 4 Ultra 12K Balances fine detail and a plate large enough for useful batches; tilt release and monitoring features reduce some workflow friction. You cannot ventilate a resin workspace, or you print figures only occasionally and do not need the capacity.
Smaller batches and footprint ELEGOO Mars 4 Ultra or comparable Mars-class machine Compact plate, high advertised detail and a lower-capacity workflow suited to individual figures. You routinely print whole armies or large scenic models.
Compact detail-focused alternative Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K S Small footprint, 7.1-inch 8K monochrome LCD and 16.5 × 7.2 × 18 cm stated build volume. You value batch capacity over a compact machine.
Terrain and accessories FDM printer, such as the Bambu Lab A1 mini or a comparable model Filament is a cleaner workflow for buildings, dungeon tiles, bases, movement trays and organizers. Your main goal is tiny facial features, fingers, armor trim and other fine organic detail.
Controlled professional workflow Formlabs Form 4 ecosystem Worth considering for studios, schools or businesses that value a documented materials and support ecosystem. Your priority is the lowest-cost hobby printing.

If you cannot provide appropriate ventilation and protective handling for uncured resin and wash solvents, do not buy a conventional hobby resin printer for an occupied room. Choose FDM or wait until you can establish a suitable workspace.

Resin or FDM for miniatures?

For painted tabletop figures, resin is generally the right technology. MSLA printers expose a whole layer of liquid photopolymer through an LCD mask. That lets them reproduce small sculpted features that are difficult for a filament nozzle to form cleanly. Resin is especially effective for 28–32 mm people, monsters, robes, scales, small weapons, and display sculpts.

FDM printers melt and lay down filament. Layer lines and nozzle width make tiny organic forms harder to render, although an FDM printer can still make miniatures with careful tuning, a smaller nozzle and fine layers. Its strengths are larger, less intricate parts: dungeon tiles, buildings, scenic bases, movement trays, storage and props. A large dragon with broad, relatively simple forms may also be a reasonable FDM project; a tiny dragon with fine scales and claws is a better resin job.

  • Choose resin for small figures, fine faces and armor, thin accessories, and display detail.
  • Choose FDM for terrain, organizers, bases, larger props, and a workflow that avoids liquid resin and wash solvent.
  • Consider both if you regularly print both detailed characters and bulky gaming accessories and can safely manage two workflows.

FDM is not mess-free: it needs filament storage, nozzle and bed maintenance, and sometimes tuning. But it avoids the resin-specific sequence of handling uncured material, washing prints and UV-curing them.

Why the Saturn 4 Ultra 12K was the 2025 all-round pick

The Saturn 4 Ultra 12K combines a 10-inch 12K monochrome LCD with manufacturer-listed XY resolution of 19 × 24 µm and a larger build area than compact Mars-class machines. That combination is useful for painters who want both crisp figures and the option to arrange several models on one plate. ELEGOO also lists tilt-release technology, resin-shortage detection, leveling-failure alarms and residue detection on its product page.

A larger plate can improve throughput without reducing the time per layer: in a layer-based resin print, several figures of similar height can often print in roughly the same number of layer cycles as one. That is a practical consequence of the process, not a manufacturer guarantee. The plate still has to accommodate the models and their supports, and larger batches use more resin and create more cleanup work.

The release system and sensors can reduce friction and help flag some problems; they do not design supports, calibrate every resin or guarantee a successful print. Temperature also matters: resin viscosity and exposure behavior vary with conditions. ELEGOO says a later Saturn 4 Ultra 16K listing has tank heating intended to maintain resin around 30°C. Do not assume every 12K configuration has the same features; check the exact model listing. Heating can help in a cool workspace, but it does not replace calibration or safe handling.

ELEGOO’s advertised layer-speed claims are conditional. The company ties a 5.5-second layer result on its 16K page to fast-print mode and default CHITUBOX parameters. Actual time depends on resin, settings, layer height, temperature, model height and supports; do not use a headline speed as a promise for every miniature.

When a larger printer is worth it

Step up to a large-format Saturn-class printer if you regularly print armies, multiple large figures, busts or scenic bases, and you have space for the machine and its post-processing setup. A large plate can mean fewer batches. It also means a larger footprint, more resin on hand, and potentially greater material loss when a large batch fails.

The Saturn 4 Ultra 16K is listed as a later refresh/upmarket option, not evidence that a 16K model was the right 2025 pick. More pixels do not automatically mean visibly better painted figures. Compare the exact machine’s XY pixel size, plate dimensions, optical consistency, support ecosystem and replacement-part costs rather than buying by the “K” label alone.

How to choose: the specifications that matter

  1. XY pixel size and optical quality. Pixel size describes the nominal lateral detail increment more usefully than an “8K” or “12K” label alone. Light uniformity and exposure quality also affect consistency across the plate.
  2. Build plate dimensions and Z height. Plate width and depth determine how many figures and supports fit in a batch. Z height matters for tall monsters, banners and busts. A big printer is wasted capacity if you only print one figure at a time.
  3. Release system. Tilt-release mechanisms can lower peel forces and speed layer separation, but they cannot compensate for weak supports or poor orientation.
  4. Resin temperature and calibration. Cold resin can behave differently from warm resin. Heating may reduce one variable, but exposure tests and resin-specific settings still matter.
  5. Profiles and slicer support. A reliable starting profile for the exact printer and resin can save trial and error. Profiles are starting points, not universal settings: temperature, resin batches and models vary. See Formlabs’ published third-party printer settings for an example of how exposure, washing and curing guidance can be specific to a printer and slicer.
  6. Service parts and consumables. Check availability and cost of replacement LCDs, release film, vats and other parts before buying. These are part of ownership, not remote edge cases.
  7. Footprint and environment. Count the printer, wash container or station, curing setup, supplies and work surface. Odor, ventilation and noise matter in an apartment or shared home.
  8. Monitoring and automation. Cameras, alarms, leveling aids and temperature management can help, but none substitutes for correct supports, exposure settings and supervision.

Do you need 12K or 16K?

Usually not. A well-set-up 8K–12K resin printer can produce excellent miniatures if the sculpt has sufficient detail, exposure is calibrated, layer height is appropriate, supports are placed well, and washing and curing are done properly. Higher resolution can refine edges, but cannot fix a weak STL, overexposure, poor orientation, failed supports or rough post-processing. Treat 12K or 16K as one differentiator—not a quality guarantee.

Choosing among the resin alternatives

ELEGOO Mars 4 Ultra: smaller and more focused

The Mars 4 Ultra’s 7-inch 9K monochrome LCD and manufacturer-advertised 18 µm XY resolution make it a compact choice for individual figures and small batches. A smaller plate is less efficient for armies, but it can be enough for a painter who prints one character, a few replacement pieces or occasional display models. Its smaller footprint is not a safety exemption: uncured resin and wash solvent still need careful handling and an appropriate workspace.

Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K S: detail in a compact format

Phrozen lists a 7.1-inch 8K monochrome LCD and a 16.5 × 7.2 × 18 cm build volume for the Sonic Mini 8K S. It suits small-batch, detail-focused users who prefer Phrozen’s product ecosystem. Its capacity is less compelling when the main goal is printing a large army in fewer batches.

Formlabs: a different kind of purchase

Formlabs’ Form 4 ecosystem is aimed at users who place value on controlled materials, documentation, support and process repeatability—such as professional studios or educational settings. That is a different value proposition from a low-cost hobby MSLA printer, and its acquisition and material costs are not comparable on a per-printer basis. Consult Formlabs’ resin-printer safety guidance and material documentation; a more controlled ecosystem does not mean resin can be handled casually.

Choose resin for the miniature you want to paint

Standard gray resin is a practical starting point for general-purpose testing and painting. Its neutral surface makes sculpted details easy to inspect before priming. But resin type changes how a print behaves:

  • Standard resin: often a useful low-cost baseline for crisp detail, but may be brittle. Thin ankles, swords and staffs can snap during support removal, painting or transport.
  • Tough or ABS-like resin: a better starting point for gaming pieces that will be handled, dropped or packed away, especially thin weapons and wings. “Tough” does not mean unbreakable; formulation, wall thickness, model design and curing all affect durability.
  • Flexible or elastic resin: use when flexibility is specifically useful and the material suits the model. It is not a universal upgrade.
  • Water-washable resin: may avoid a particular wash solvent, but the wash water becomes contaminated with uncured resin. “Water-washable” does not mean harmless, drain-safe or free of disposal requirements.

Before choosing a resin, read its safety data sheet (SDS), exposure and cure guidance, recommended wash method, and durability information. Check whether the manufacturer provides a profile for your exact printer. Do not assume settings for one resin or printer transfer cleanly to another.

ELEGOO has an official wash-and-cure accessory collection; Phrozen has a wash-and-cure collection. Confirm that the specific equipment fits your build size and preferred washing process.

Workspace and resin safety are part of the buying decision

Do not treat the printer’s cover as proof that the whole process is safe. Exposure can occur while pouring resin, opening the machine after a job, removing the plate, washing a print, taking off supports, cleaning spills, curing or sanding. Uncured resin contains acrylates and other chemicals that can cause dermatitis or asthma. NIOSH’s January 2025 guidance recommends exposure reduction through ventilation, appropriate gloves, eye protection, protective clothing and careful handling of resin and wash solvents.

  • Do not set up a low-cost resin printer in a closed closet or occupied bedroom. Choose a workspace with suitable ventilation and follow the resin’s SDS and equipment instructions.
  • Keep resin and solvents away from food, children, heat and ignition sources. Store materials as their labels direct.
  • Wear gloves appropriate to the resin and selected solvent, eye protection and protective clothing. Change contaminated gloves immediately; do not use bare hands to handle uncured prints.
  • Keep washing containers closed when possible and avoid splashing. Follow solvent-specific precautions.
  • Do not pour resin, resin-contaminated wash water or contaminated solvent down a household drain. Manage waste according to product directions and local requirements.

Formlabs’ safety guidance likewise advises ventilation, protective equipment and care with solvents, and warns against operating resin equipment in closed, unventilated rooms. If you cannot set up an appropriate space, FDM is the safer fit for your current circumstances.

A first-print workflow that protects detail and reduces failures

  1. Prepare the space first. Set out PPE, tools and a dedicated work surface. Make sure ventilation and waste handling are ready before opening resin.
  2. Inspect and install. Confirm the vat’s release film is clean and undamaged, secure the build plate, and follow the exact printer’s leveling or calibration procedure.
  3. Prepare resin as directed. Stir or shake according to the label, avoid splashes, and do not fill past the vat’s maximum line. Do not mix materials unless compatibility is confirmed.
  4. Slice for the exact machine and material. Select the correct printer variant and resin profile in the slicer. Orient the miniature to limit large cross-sections and suction; add robust supports, putting contact points on hidden areas where possible rather than faces, armor trim or other visible detail.
  5. Calibrate exposure. Run the resin maker’s exposure test or a recognized validation model. A printer’s default profile is a starting point, not a guarantee for every resin, room temperature or batch.
  6. Watch the early layers and inspect the result. Stop if the first layers fail to attach, supports detach, the machine makes unexpected noise or resin leaks. Do not blindly scrape cured debris from the vat; it can damage the release film or LCD.
  7. Remove the print with PPE. Use the supplied scraper carefully and catch drips over a dedicated surface. Keep uncured resin off skin and away from the work area.
  8. Wash with the recommended method. Follow the material maker’s wash solvent and timing guidance. Avoid splashing, and do not put contaminated liquid into a drain.
  9. Remove supports carefully. Supports are often easier to remove before final cure and may be less likely to snap delicate parts, but follow the resin maker’s instructions. Use flush cutters and eye protection; cut fragments can fly.
  10. Dry completely, then cure. Use the resin maker’s time and temperature guidance. Longer curing is not always better: some resins can become more brittle or change appearance if over-cured.
  11. Dispose of contaminated waste responsibly. Cure liquid resin waste before disposal only where product directions and local rules permit. Treat contaminated gloves, towels, filters and solvent according to local requirements.

For painting, support placement and removal deserve particular attention: a support scar across a face, cloak fold or armor edge can take more finishing work than a small difference in advertised resolution saves. Inspect the miniature under good light before priming; deal with remaining supports and surface marks before they become harder to reach under paint.

Common failures and what to check

The print comes off the build plate

Possible causes include poor leveling, insufficient bottom exposure, a dirty or poorly prepared plate, cold resin, excessive peel force or inadequate supports. Stop the printer. With PPE, remove the failure and cured debris; inspect or filter resin as appropriate, then check the film and screen. Re-level only by the manufacturer’s procedure, recalibrate exposure, and try a better orientation or stronger supports.

The raft prints, but supports or the model fail

Thin supports, small support tips, a large cross-section, low exposure or a hollow part without drainage can contribute. Strengthen supports at the early vulnerable layers, reduce unsupported islands, tilt the model and calibrate exposure. Hollow models need properly placed drainage so liquid resin does not remain trapped inside.

Details look swollen, gaps close up, or the surface shows “elephant skin”

Overexposure, a mismatched resin profile, excessive anti-aliasing or blur, and poorly calibrated transition layers are possible causes. Reduce exposure incrementally and retest; confirm the slicer profile matches the exact printer variant. Do not change several variables at once if you are trying to identify the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A hollow model cracks or leaks

Trapped uncured resin, inadequate drainage or washing, pressure or heat, and excessive curing can contribute. Add suitable drain holes, wash internal cavities, and cure as directed. Do not seal a hollow model until uncured resin and solvent have been removed.

A gaming miniature breaks too easily

Standard resin can be brittle, particularly in thin parts. Check the material choice, part thickness, support removal and cure conditions. Tough or ABS-like resin may be a better fit for handled miniatures, but it cannot make a fragile design indestructible.

Resin spills

Keep skin away. Put on fresh gloves and eye protection, absorb the spill with disposable material, and clean the surface using the resin and equipment maker’s instructions. Handle contaminated material under local disposal rules. Inspect for resin beneath the vat, around the screen and inside moving parts before using the printer again.

The release film or LCD is damaged

Never press a scraper into the LCD, and remove cured debris before starting another job. Use a screen protector if the manufacturer supports one, replace damaged release film promptly and do not continue printing if resin has entered the machine body.

Final decision tree

  • Mostly detailed characters and individual models? Choose a compact or mid-size resin printer such as the Mars class.
  • Whole armies, multiple figures or scenic bases? Choose a larger Saturn-class machine if you can accommodate its footprint, material use and cleanup.
  • Mostly terrain, buildings, trays and organizers? Choose FDM.
  • Figures and terrain in regular rotation? A resin printer for figures plus an FDM printer for bulky accessories is often a better combination than expecting one technology to excel at both.
  • No suitable ventilated workspace or willingness to use PPE? Do not buy a conventional hobby resin printer for that setup; use FDM or wait.
  • Professional, school or business use where documentation and process support matter? Compare a controlled ecosystem such as Formlabs against your actual material and service needs, not only its printer price.

For the 2025 field, the Saturn 4 Ultra 12K was the strongest balance for a hobbyist who wanted detailed minis and meaningful batch capacity. The best printer for a painter who prints only one or two figures, however, may be a smaller machine—or no resin printer at all if the workspace cannot support the workflow.
