To add a downloaded brush or other tool to Clip Studio Paint, extract the download first, then drag its .sut, .sutg, or .abr file onto the Tool Group palette (called the Sub Tool palette in older versions). You can also open that palette’s menu and choose Import tool (older versions: Import sub tool).
Import into the palette, not onto the canvas. The currently selected tool group determines where a single tool is added.
Before importing
- Check the file type. Native Clip Studio tools usually end in
.sut. A.sutgfile is a tool-group set, and.abris a Photoshop brush file. Older IllustStudio or ComicStudio sets may use.tos. - Extract ZIP archives. Open the archive in your file manager and copy the actual tool files to a normal folder. Clip Studio Paint may not load a ZIP directly (official support guidance).
- Keep the original. Save the downloaded files and any license or installation notes until you have tested the tool.
- Use a supported edition. Clip Studio’s documentation says brush files cannot be imported in DEBUT. Other editions and features can also vary by version.
Windows and macOS: import from the palette menu
- Open Clip Studio Paint and a canvas.
- Select the destination group—for example Pen, Brush, Airbrush, or Decoration.
- Display the Tool Group palette. In versions before 5.0 this is the Sub Tool palette.
- Open the palette menu at its upper-left corner.
- Choose Import tool. Older interfaces call this Import sub tool.
- Select the extracted
.sut,.sutg, or.abrfile and click Open. - Choose the new tool and draw a test stroke.
A single .sut normally becomes one item in the selected group. A .sutg set, or an .abr containing several brushes, may create a new group instead (Importing tools; Adding brushes).

Faster method: drag and drop
Open the folder containing the extracted file and make the Tool Group/Sub Tool palette visible in Clip Studio Paint. Drag the file from Explorer or Finder onto the palette and release it when the palette accepts the drop. On macOS, placing Finder and Clip Studio Paint side by side makes this easier. On iPad, the supported equivalent is dragging a brush file from the Files app to the Sub Tool palette. Do not drop the file on the canvas (official instructions).

Clip Studio Paint 5.0 terminology
Version 5.0 changed several labels, which is why older tutorials may appear to disagree:
| Older label | Version 5.0 label |
|---|---|
| Sub Tool palette | Tool Group palette |
| Import sub tool | Import tool |
| Add sub tool | Add tool or Add from downloads |
| Create custom sub tool | Create custom tool |
The workflow is fundamentally the same; only the names changed (Version 5.0 interface changes).

Adding brushes from Clip Studio Assets
An Asset download is usually an account-linked material, not a loose file that you import with the file picker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Material palette.
- Open Download and locate the brush or tool.
- Drag it to the desired Tool Group/Sub Tool palette.
Depending on the interface, you can instead use Add from downloads (older versions: Add sub tool) at the bottom of the tool list, then select the downloaded material. Other material types—such as images, 3D objects, and poses—use their own loading commands; they are not brush files (loading materials).

Supported formats and limits
| Extension | What it contains | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
.sut |
One native Clip Studio tool or brush | Usual format for individual tools |
.sutg |
A Clip Studio tool group or set | May create a new group |
.abr |
Photoshop brushes | Supported from CSP 1.10.5; imported appearance may differ and need adjustment |
.tos |
IllustStudio/ComicStudio tool set | Windows and Intel-based Mac only; Apple-silicon Macs cannot load it |
These format and platform details are documented by Clip Studio (supported brush files). If a creator offers both .tos and .sut/.abr, choose the latter on an Apple-silicon Mac. Converting an old set is not guaranteed, so obtaining a compatible export is safer.
Simple Mode on tablets and smartphones
Simple Mode is not the same as importing a local file in Studio Mode. Its documented command transfers compatible tools that are already available in Studio Mode:
Rank #4
- Clip Studio Tabmate 2, the handheld shortcut device for Clip Studio Paint supports iPadOS and iOS.
- Assign frequently used operations to each button to greatly enhance your production speed. Create faster while enjoying the drawing experience.
- Supported software: Clip Studio Paint Ver. 3.0 and later / Note: Not compatible with Clip Studio Paint Ver. 1 / Ver. 2
- Communication method: Bluetooth Low Energy 5.1
- Includes a Clip Studio Paint Debut single device 12-month license
- Open the Sub Tool palette in Simple Mode.
- Tap the + button at the top right.
- Choose Import from Studio mode.
- Select the tool, tap OK, and find it in Downloads.
Not every tool can transfer. In Studio Mode, select the tool, long-press it, open Sub tool settings, and check Output process. Object, Gradient, Create frame, Create balloon, Create text, several ruler functions, focus/speed lines, light table, and other specialized processes are among the documented exclusions (Simple Mode compatibility). Mobile menus and local-file handling vary by device and version; the iPad Files drag-and-drop workflow is specifically documented, but it should not be assumed for every Android or smartphone setup.
If the imported tool is missing
- Still zipped: extract the archive and import the inner file.
- Wrong target: reopen the Tool Group/Sub Tool palette; dropping on the canvas does nothing.
- Looking in the wrong group: return to the group selected before importing—Pen, Brush, Decoration, or another category.
- At the bottom: scroll to the end of the tool list. New items often appear there.
- New group created: check for a separate group, especially after importing
.sutgor a multi-brush.abr. - Asset download: look in Material > Download and add it from there rather than using the local-file importer.
- Missing command: Version 5.0 says Import tool; older tutorials say Import sub tool. Simple Mode has a different interface, and DEBUT may not offer brush-file importing.
After a successful import, you can drag the tool between groups to organize it (customizing tool palettes). Rename or adjust settings only after confirming the original works, and retain the source file for reinstallation.

Do you need to buy anything?
No. If Clip Studio Paint is already installed, importing a normal tool file requires no purchase. PRO is generally sufficient for illustration and brush work; EX is aimed at users who also need its advanced comic or animation features. Clip Studio Assets is convenient when you want account-synced, ready-to-add materials rather than a third-party file. Plan names, prices, and availability vary by country and date, so check the official purchase page before subscribing.
The Bottom Line
Extract the download, then import the supported file through the Tool Group/Sub Tool palette—or drag it onto that palette. For Assets, use Material > Download; for Simple Mode, transfer compatible tools from Studio Mode.
