Choose AutoCAD for professional 2D drafting, DWG-based collaboration, and industry documentation; choose FreeCAD for broad, free, graphical parametric 3D CAD; choose OpenSCAD when you want to define reproducible, parameter-driven solid models in code. They overlap in some 3D tasks, but they are not three versions of the same kind of CAD software—and none is a perfect free replacement for every AutoCAD workflow.
The differences at a glance
| Tool | Best known for | How you work | Typical project file | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AutoCAD | 2D drafting, documentation, DWG exchange, and Autodesk toolsets | Interactive drafting and modeling in a commercial CAD platform | DWG | Subscription cost; not the natural choice for Linux-only users or simple hobby parts |
| FreeCAD | General-purpose, open-source parametric 3D CAD | Graphical sketches, constraints, features, and a model tree organized through workbenches | FCStd | Workflows and interfaces vary by workbench; DWG exchange is not guaranteed to be lossless |
| OpenSCAD | Scripted, reproducible solid models | Write code describing geometry and operations, then preview or render it | SCAD | Not a conventional interactive drafting or feature-editing application |
If the deliverable must remain a fully editable DWG for a client or employer, AutoCAD is the safest fit of these three. For a visual mechanical-design workflow without a software subscription, FreeCAD is the closest fit. If a part is naturally expressed as dimensions, repeated geometry, and Boolean operations—and you are comfortable with code—OpenSCAD can be the more direct choice.
What each program is designed to do
AutoCAD: drafting and documentation first
AutoCAD is a proprietary commercial CAD platform best known for precise 2D drafting and documentation. Its working environment is built around concepts such as layers, blocks, external references, dimensions, annotation, layouts, viewports, and plotting. DWG is central to its handoff and collaboration workflows.

AutoCAD also supports 3D solids, surfaces, and mesh objects, so it is not a 2D-only tool. Its 3D capabilities are especially relevant when geometry is connected to drawing production or an established Autodesk workflow. A subscription includes desktop software and web and mobile access under Autodesk’s current terms. Autodesk also offers industry-specific toolsets for areas including architecture, electrical, mechanical, MEP, plant design, mapping, and raster design; availability and terms should be checked on the official product page.
FreeCAD: graphical, feature-based 3D CAD
FreeCAD is a free, open-source, cross-platform parametric 3D modeler. Its conventional mechanical workflow starts with a sketch, adds geometric or dimensional constraints, and builds features such as pads, pockets, fillets, chamfers, and patterns. A document tree records the sequence, so you can revise earlier design decisions and update downstream geometry.
FreeCAD is modular: workbenches provide tools for different tasks, including Part Design, technical drawings, and other engineering-related workflows. Python scripting, macros, and community extensions broaden what it can do. The breadth is useful, but it also means workflows, polish, and maintenance can differ between workbenches. Community add-ons are not automatically part of the core application, and each may have its own compatibility, support, and licensing considerations. See the FreeCAD Addon Manager page and the project’s official repository.
OpenSCAD: CAD through code
OpenSCAD is a script-based solid modeler. Rather than selecting faces and editing a feature tree, you describe geometry and transformations in source code. A design can combine primitives using constructive solid geometry (CSG): for example, subtract a cylinder from a box to create a hole, or place copies of a shape in a repeated pattern.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
width = 40;
height = 20;
depth = 10;
cube([width, height, depth]);
Changing a variable regenerates the geometry. This makes OpenSCAD attractive for brackets, enclosures, adapters, organizers, mounts, and families of parts whose dimensions have explicit relationships. The code is text that can be reviewed, backed up, compared, and tracked in version control. It is a poor fit for people who expect a conventional sketch-and-click workflow, large drawing sets, or interactive editing of arbitrary imported and organic geometry. The official documentation explains the language and workflow.
Compare them by task—not feature count
2D drafting, drawings, and plotting
For drafting and annotation-heavy production work, AutoCAD is the strongest choice here. Its mature drafting environment supports layers, blocks, references, dimensions, hatches, layouts, viewports, plotting, templates, and standards-oriented workflows. It is the natural fit when a team exchanges DWGs or builds architectural, civil, construction, MEP, electrical, or similar documentation.

FreeCAD can create technical drawings from 3D models, including drawing views and annotations through its TechDraw workflow, and can export drawings to formats such as PDF. That can work well when a drawing is derived from a model. It does not make FreeCAD a drop-in substitute for every 2D AutoCAD production process: workflows can be less direct for people who primarily draft in 2D, and importing or exporting a file does not promise that layouts, dimensions, blocks, proxy objects, fonts, plot styles, or specialized objects will retain their full behavior.
OpenSCAD can produce 2D geometry and projections, but it is generally not the tool for floor plans, construction documents, title blocks, sheet layouts, or large annotation-heavy drawing sets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMechanical parts and parametric design
FreeCAD offers the most conventional graphical mechanical-CAD workflow of the three. You can constrain a sketch, turn it into a feature, add holes or pockets, and revise dimensions through a visible model tree. Its tools also include Boolean modeling, technical drawings, and workflows related to engineering and manufacturing. Some functions—especially those provided by extensions—can depend on the specific workbench, version, or add-on.
OpenSCAD is strong when a part is mostly defined by dimensions and simple geometry. A parameter can control an enclosure’s width, wall thickness, or mounting-hole spacing, and the source can generate related variants. It becomes less comfortable when the model relies on intricate, freeform geometry, extensive imported geometry, or interactive face-by-face editing.
AutoCAD can model 3D solids, surfaces, and meshes, but it is not automatically the best mechanical feature-history modeler just because it supports 3D. Its strongest advantage remains its place in a drafting and documentation ecosystem.
3D printing and maker projects
For functional printable parts, FreeCAD and OpenSCAD are often the most relevant choices. Choose FreeCAD if you want to sketch and revise parts visually, use a model tree, or prepare technical drawings. Choose OpenSCAD if dimensions and repeated forms are naturally expressed as parameters and code. AutoCAD can make sense if the project sits inside a DWG-based professional workflow, but it may be more software than a hobbyist needs just to produce a printable part.

Whichever tool you use, an STL or similar mesh export is not the same as an editable CAD project. Mesh exports generally do not retain sketch constraints, feature history, named design dimensions, or assembly relationships. Keep the source project—DWG, FCStd, or SCAD—alongside the mesh. Before printing or manufacturing, reopen the export in the intended slicer or downstream application and check scale, units, orientation, holes, curved surfaces, and whether the geometry is valid.
Architecture, construction, and specialized industry work
AutoCAD is the clear fit of this comparison when a client or employer requires DWG deliverables, established documentation standards, or an Autodesk toolset for a specialized discipline. FreeCAD has architecture- and BIM-related workflows, but capabilities, interoperability, and team processes should be evaluated against the actual project requirements. OpenSCAD is not a substitute for a drawing-centered building or engineering documentation workflow.
Linux and cross-platform use
FreeCAD and OpenSCAD are relevant options for users who need Linux support. AutoCAD is available for Windows and macOS, alongside web and mobile access, but not as a native Linux desktop application. Check the relevant project’s current download page for supported operating systems and minimum versions before installing; requirements change between releases.
Scripting and automation
OpenSCAD puts code at the center of modeling, which suits users who want explicit parameters and reproducible geometry. FreeCAD supports Python scripting and macros in addition to its graphical workflow. AutoCAD offers APIs, AutoLISP, apps, and customization features for automating drafting and related tasks. These are different kinds of automation: writing the geometry itself in OpenSCAD is not the same as scripting operations inside an interactive CAD platform.
“Parametric” means different things here
- FreeCAD: A feature-based model history. Sketch constraints and dimensions drive features, and edits to earlier parts of the tree can update later geometry.
- OpenSCAD: Parameters are defined in source code. Changing a variable or expression regenerates the model, but the user edits code rather than a graphical feature tree.
- AutoCAD: Drafting and modeling can be automated and customized, and AutoCAD has constraints and dynamic behavior. Its workflow is not the same as FreeCAD’s history-based mechanical model or OpenSCAD’s code-defined geometry.
So the question is not simply “Which one is parametric?” It is whether you want to revise a constrained feature history, change source-code variables, or work in a drafting-oriented environment with its own automation options.
Learning curve: choose the mental model that suits you
AutoCAD asks you to learn drafting concepts and a large command set: coordinates, object snaps, layers, annotation scales, layouts, and plotting are part of producing reliable documents. Its long-established training ecosystem and familiarity across many workplaces can pay off if you collaborate with AutoCAD users.

FreeCAD uses recognizable graphical CAD concepts, but workbenches and modeling paradigms can make the interface feel less uniform. Beginners must decide which tools and workflows to use. The model tree is powerful, but references to generated faces or edges can become fragile when upstream geometry changes. The project provides downloads, documentation, community discussion, and add-ons; it does not eliminate the need to learn the chosen workflow.
OpenSCAD has a smaller core language but requires comfort with syntax, program structure, and debugging. It can feel predictable once you understand its primitives and Boolean operations, particularly if you already program. Organize longer models with clear variable names, comments, and modules; avoid unexplained numbers and test rendered exports rather than relying only on a quick preview.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Files, DWG compatibility, and safe exchange
AutoCAD’s native DWG workflow is a major advantage when the receiving team expects editable AutoCAD drawings. Autodesk documents which historical DWG versions its products can open and edit; compatibility is version-specific, so check the relevant DWG format guidance for the product version in use.
FreeCAD supports a range of import and export formats, including STEP, IGES, STL, DXF, SVG, IFC, and others, subject to format-specific capabilities and limitations. Its import/export documentation is a better guide than a blanket claim that it “opens AutoCAD files.” DWG, DXF, 2D geometry, 3D solids, and annotations are different cases, and behavior can depend on conversion tools or libraries.
Do not assume a DWG or DXF will survive a round trip unchanged outside AutoCAD. Features that may be affected include dynamic blocks, associative dimensions, layouts, viewports, proxy objects, external references, plot settings, fonts, line types, metadata, and discipline-specific objects. OpenSCAD is not a DWG editor.

For exchanging solid geometry, STEP is generally a more appropriate neutral format than a mesh when both applications support the required geometry. For printing, STL or 3MF can be suitable outputs, but they do not preserve ordinary editable feature history. DXF can carry selected 2D geometry; it is not a promise of complete drawing fidelity.
Safer handoff practice: preserve the original project file and export a copy. Test with a representative production file—not a simple sample—and reopen every conversion. Inspect units, scale, layers or bodies, dimensions, annotations, holes, orientation, curved surfaces, and external references. If someone else must revise the work, test that handoff too.
Cost, licensing, and professional use
AutoCAD is a paid subscription product for normal commercial use. Price depends on region, subscription term, taxes, and promotions, so check Autodesk’s live product and buying page rather than relying on a dated figure. Eligible students and educators can receive renewable one-year educational access, but educational access is not a general commercial license. Autodesk’s subscription FAQ explains current access terms.
FreeCAD’s core application is free and open source. Its licensing permits commercial use under the applicable terms; review the project’s license explanation for details. Add-ons, macros, and external libraries may have separate licenses. Free access does not mean a conventional vendor support contract is included: support is primarily through the community and surrounding ecosystem.

For a business workflow, confirm the current license and the terms of any libraries or other components you distribute. Free software does not automatically provide commercial support, warranty, or vendor accountability.
For a professional team, the license fee is only part of the decision. Ask whether the client requires native DWG, whether another employee can maintain the model, how support works when deadlines are at risk, whether add-ons can be used commercially, and what it would cost to migrate templates, libraries, and existing files. A free program can still carry substantial retraining and conversion costs.
Which should you choose?
- Choose AutoCAD if DWG compatibility, professional 2D drafting, layouts, plotting, established standards, specialized toolsets, or an Autodesk-based workplace are requirements.
- Choose FreeCAD if you want a no-cost graphical 3D CAD application for mechanical or engineering-oriented design, need Linux support, and prefer sketches, constraints, and a visible feature history.
- Choose OpenSCAD if you are comfortable with code and want reproducible, parameter-driven solid parts that can be generated and revised systematically.
- Choose neither without a closer workflow evaluation if you depend on advanced freeform surfacing, cloud-native simultaneous collaboration, enterprise product-data management, a specific CAM/BIM/simulation ecosystem, or a regulated process that requires validated tools and procedures.
For specialized needs, investigate alternatives in the right category rather than forcing this comparison: LibreCAD is more directly aimed at free 2D drafting; commercial DWG-centered tools such as BricsCAD may be relevant to AutoCAD offices; and products such as Fusion or Onshape target other combinations of parametric design, manufacturing, and collaboration. Check each product’s current features, licensing, and commercial-use terms before adopting it.
A practical evaluation checklist
Before moving a project or team, test the actual work rather than comparing feature lists:
- Open a representative DWG that includes the layers, references, dimensions, layouts, and objects your team uses.
- Build or revise a constrained mechanical part with the features your work requires.
- Test a multi-body design or assembly if your projects include one.
- Generate a drawing sheet with annotations and verify the exported result.
- Export a print or manufacturing file, reopen it in the target application, and check scale and geometry.
- Ask a second user to revise the file using the chosen workflow.
- Check whether conversion preserves the information your downstream users need—not merely whether a file opens.
- Confirm software, add-on, library, and educational-license terms for the intended use.
As a version-specific example, Autodesk’s AutoCAD 2026 requirements list 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, 8 GB of basic RAM and 32 GB recommended RAM, with additional graphics and .NET requirements; the same page lists macOS support separately. Requirements vary by operating system and use case, so check the AutoCAD 2026 system requirements for details. FreeCAD’s official download page listed version 1.1.1 as stable when checked on or before August 18, 2026, with 64-bit Windows, macOS, and Linux packages; verify the current downloads page for the release and supported OS versions available to you. Check OpenSCAD’s official downloads page for its current packages and releases.
