For a quick professional profile photo, AI headshot services can be cheaper and faster than arranging a studio shoot—but the results are synthetic, and more generated images do not necessarily mean a more convincing likeness. The five services commonly compared in 2024 were Aragon AI, HeadshotPro, BetterPic, Secta AI (also called Secta Labs), and Dreamwave AI. The most useful way to choose among them is by your needs: speed, team coordination, customization, or image variety.
Important date note: This is a retrospective guide to the 2024 shortlist, not a verified record of each service’s exact 2024 price, plan, or feature set. Available product information includes current vendor claims and comparison pages that may have been updated since 2024. Treat prices, photo requirements, turnaround, privacy terms, and availability as details to verify on the service’s own site before paying. The recommendations below are category-based, not the result of a documented, head-to-head test.

Comparison pages often omit a reproducible testing method, and at least one prominent comparison is published by BetterPic, which is also one of the products it recommends. How AI headshot generators work—and what they do not do
You upload several photos of yourself; the service analyzes visual features such as your face, hair, skin tone, and expressions, then generates new portraits in selected professional styles. The output is usually a synthetic image, not a photograph of you taken in new lighting by a photographer. It may preserve your face while changing the clothes, background, pose, lighting, or apparent body proportions.
That distinction matters. A polished portrait can still be a poor headshot if the face has drifted, the hairline has changed, or the image suggests a look you do not have. Compare every candidate with a recent real photo and reject anything that materially misrepresents you.
The five services, by use case
1. Aragon AI: a practical pick for speed and a conventional professional look
Aragon is a reasonable first option for an individual who wants a relatively simple route to a business-style portrait. Its current product page advertises processing times that vary by package, alongside different image counts, attire and background options, and output resolutions. Those are current product claims, not verified 2024 specifications or guaranteed delivery times. Check the live offer and the exact pixel dimensions before purchasing; a file suitable for LinkedIn may not be suitable for print.
Aragon currently lists standard output at 896 × 1088 pixels and a higher-tier option at 1792 × 2176 pixels. It also describes encryption, SOC 2 Type II certification, and account deletion controls. These are the vendor’s statements; they do not, by themselves, answer how long every input is retained, whether any processing partners receive it, or what deletion covers. Watch for: Refund eligibility can depend on timing, whether images have been downloaded, compliance with photo-upload guidance, and plan type. The current policy describes a 14-calendar-day request window and distinguishes team plans; read it before placing an order. A vendor’s “most realistic” language is marketing unless supported by independent, transparent testing.

2. HeadshotPro: the team-workflow choice
HeadshotPro is oriented toward organizations that need portraits for multiple employees, with team purchasing, centralized style controls, and administration features described on its current product page. That can make it a better operational fit than buying individual packages one at a time, especially when employees are distributed or a coordinated in-person shoot is hard to schedule.
For individuals, current vendor material describes one-time packages; team purchasing is credit-based, with volume discounts and enterprise features such as single sign-on also described. Do not compare a team credit price directly with an individual package: calculate the cost per person and confirm what each person receives. The vendor says uploaded photos are not used to train its models and are automatically deleted after 30 days, and it advertises a money-back guarantee and SOC 2 Type II compliance. Verify the applicable terms and documentation with HeadshotPro.
Good match: HR teams, agencies, founders, and office managers coordinating many portraits.
Watch for: Published accounts disagree on how many source photos an individual needs. Confirm the live instructions rather than relying on an old roundup. A large output set also means more images to inspect, not necessarily a higher share of good likenesses.

3. BetterPic: more room to refine the look
BetterPic is aimed at people who want a wider range of visual choices. Its own comparison material reports a large style library, 4K output positioning, and a human-editing component, alongside package and image-count claims. These are vendor-reported specifications, and plan limits may apply. The company’s comparison pages naturally have a commercial interest in its own product, so their “best” verdicts should not be mistaken for independent rankings.
More choices can help if you have a specific professional style in mind, but they may also add decisions and complicate a simple job. Before paying, check whether human editing applies to every image or only selected outputs, what resolution the purchased tier actually delivers, and whether the current plan suits your needs. 4. Secta AI / Secta Labs: for broad experimentation
Secta is a candidate for people who want a broad pool of portraits and styles to explore. Its own comparison material describes a workflow using roughly 20 source images and hundreds of generated images; other coverage reports different style counts and package details. Those figures vary by source and may refer to different dates or plans, so treat them as indicative rather than a confirmed 2024 specification. The Secta comparison page is useful for understanding its claims, but verify current requirements and package limits on the service itself.

Watch for: More outputs can mean repetition, subtle facial distortion, or more time spent reviewing. Comparative coverage has also raised concerns about overly polished or AI-like results; judge the actual image, not the package count. See additional comparative coverage.
5. Dreamwave AI: a value-oriented option to investigate
Dreamwave appears in comparison coverage as a high-volume option with value-per-package appeal. Some third-party comparisons cite a starting price around $39, up to roughly 120 images, and, in some accounts, a free tier or preview. These are not sufficiently consistent or independently verified to present as settled 2024 terms. Check what a free preview includes, whether downloads are watermarked or limited, and the live price before you upload photos.
Good match: Budget-conscious users who want multiple variations and will carefully review them.
Watch for: Cost per generated image is not the same as cost per usable headshot. The available comparison material does not establish Dreamwave’s current photo-retention, resolution, refund, and licensing terms. Treat it as an option to investigate, not an automatic winner.

Choose by need, not by a universal ranking
- For a quick individual profile refresh: Start by comparing Aragon’s current processing estimate and output dimensions with the alternatives. Processing times are advertised estimates, not necessarily delivery guarantees.
- For a company directory: Look first at HeadshotPro’s team administration and style controls, then compare total per-person cost, access to employee uploads, and data-processing terms.
- For a particular look or more control: Consider BetterPic, but check which customizations and human-editing services are included in your plan.
- For maximum variety: Compare Secta and Dreamwave’s current package contents. Choose based on likely usable results and review effort, not raw image volume.
- For privacy-sensitive photos: Read the data policy and deletion terms before uploading to any service. If the terms do not answer your questions, do not assume that encryption or a security certification resolves them.
- For authenticity, precise branding, or a high-stakes public profile: A real photographer is the safer choice.
How to judge an AI headshot service
Do not evaluate a package only by its advertised image count. Consider these factors before purchasing:
- Likeness: Does the output still look recognizably like you, including face shape, skin tone, hairline, facial hair, and glasses?
- Professional appearance: Are the pose, lighting, clothes, and background credible for your work? Does the skin look natural rather than airbrushed?
- Usable-output rate: How many images seem likely to survive scrutiny at the size and crop where you plan to use them? Total generation count does not answer this.
- Details and artifacts: Inspect eyes, teeth, ears, hands, jewelry, tattoos, glasses, and any visible uniform or mobility aid. Small distortions can become obvious in a profile image.
- Controls: Can you select attire, background, pose, or crop, or request edits? Confirm which options come with your plan.
- Practical terms: Check total price and currency, payment type, output resolution and file format, turnaround estimate, redo and refund rules, usage rights, and data handling.
A fair comparison would send equivalent source photos to each tool, document the inputs and settings, review a stated number of outputs, and count likeness and artifact failures using the same criteria. Many published rankings do not show enough methodology for readers to reproduce their conclusions. Without that evidence, category recommendations are more defensible than claims of a single “most realistic” winner.

Follow each service’s current upload instructions. In general, submit several clear, recent photos that show you from different angles and, if permitted, with varied expressions. Choose even natural light, an unobstructed face, and images that reflect your current hair, glasses, facial hair, and age. Avoid heavy filters, blur, sunglasses, extreme shadows, and a stack of nearly identical selfies. Do not upload other people’s faces unless the service explicitly supports them and you have the necessary permission.
Photo requirements vary. Comparison material suggests approximate ranges such as 6–8 photos for Aragon, around 8 for BetterPic, 20 or more for Secta, and 5–8 for Dreamwave, but these should not be treated as fixed requirements for 2024 or as current instructions. Coverage gives conflicting HeadshotPro counts, ranging from just a few selfies to roughly 15–20 photos. Check the service’s own upload screen or help pages for the plan you intend to use.
When reviewing results, compare them with a recent real image in neutral light. Favor a simple background and restrained pose if the output looks artificial. Reject images that noticeably alter your appearance or contain implausible details, even if the portrait is otherwise flattering. A profile picture should help people recognize you, not present an invented version of you.

Privacy, rights, and workplace uploads
A face photo deserves careful handling. Before uploading, look for clear answers to these questions:
- Are source images or generated images used to train models?
- How long are the uploads retained, and is deletion automatic or something you must request?
- Do service providers or other processors receive the photos?
- For a team purchase, can an administrator see employee uploads or finished portraits?
- Is there a data-processing agreement for organizational use, and what jurisdictional privacy commitments apply?
- Can you delete the images after download, and can the service use them for marketing?
Do not treat encryption or a SOC 2 claim as a complete answer: those do not, on their own, explain model-training permission, deletion timing, or team access. Review the current policy and, for an employer or client project, obtain appropriate consent and follow the organization’s privacy process.
Also distinguish permission to use an output from ownership of that output, rights in the source photos, and any rights retained by the service. If someone else took your source photo, the photographer may have rights in that original image. Read the applicable license and terms rather than inferring broad commercial rights from a product-page summary. Aragon, for example, currently says generated images can be used for social, professional profiles, print, and personal use; confirm the wording in its current terms before relying on it.
When a real photographer is the better purchase
A photographer offers a genuine record of your appearance, authentic lighting and proportions, direction on posing and wardrobe, and more control over a specific location or brand brief. That makes a conventional shoot the more dependable choice for executives, public-facing professionals, legal or regulated contexts, and anyone whose image must match precise clothing, equipment, or setting. It is also preferable when you cannot risk identity drift.

If the results disappoint
- Before buying another package, check whether your images met the service’s current guidance for clarity, lighting, and variety.
- Replace old, filtered, blurry, or repetitive inputs with recent, well-lit photos from different angles.
- Try restrained styles and backgrounds; extreme poses and fashion directions can make errors more conspicuous.
- Contact support promptly about a redo if the plan offers one. If you want a refund, read the timing, download, upload-compliance, and plan restrictions first.
- If the face still does not look like you, do not use the result simply because it is flattering. Use a real photograph instead.
Aragon’s current refund policy describes redos and possible refunds but makes eligibility conditional, including on download status, upload compliance, timing, and plan type. Other services’ rules may differ, and current terms should not be assumed to describe their 2024 policies.
