Microsoft 365 Copilot Create is a guided workspace for making images and other content from a description or template. To make your first image, open the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, choose Create → Create an image, describe what you want, set a style and shape, then select Create. You can refine the result, but treat it as a draft: generated text and logos can be unreliable, and access depends on your account, subscription, region, and—in work or school accounts—organization settings.
“Copilot Create” is not the same thing as every image feature called Copilot or Designer. The steps below cover Create in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. The consumer Copilot experience also has image-generation and editing features, while Microsoft Designer-related functions appear across several Microsoft products. Buttons and availability can differ between these experiences.
What you can make with Copilot Create
Create is more than a prompt box: it offers guided creation options, including images and banners, with video creation available in some organizational setups. You can start with a description or adapt a template. For a painter, illustrator, or other visual creator, that makes it useful for mood-board concepts, reference imagery, event graphics, presentation visuals, and rough compositions. It is best understood as a fast ideation and production assistant—not a replacement for a painting practice or a professional design and retouching suite.

Microsoft says Create is available in a browser, with work able to continue across mobile, web, or desktop apps where supported. The exact options depend on the account and rollout. Video creation in Create requires Clipchamp to be enabled for the organization.
What you need before you start
For the documented image workflow in Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft says an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription is required. Consumer Copilot image generation is a separate entry point, and access or usage may differ. Do not assume that a free Copilot account, a personal Microsoft 365 plan, and a work or school Microsoft 365 Copilot license expose the same tools. Organizational administrators can also restrict image creation. Availability may vary by country or region, account type, platform, language, subscription, rollout, and service demand.
#1 Best Overall
If you are using a work or school account, sign in with the account your organization provides. If you are using a personal account, confirm that you are in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app rather than another Copilot surface when following these instructions. Microsoft notes that people without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license may experience variable quality, performance, and availability.
Create your first image
- Open the Microsoft 365 Copilot web app and sign in.
- Select Create in the left navigation.
- Select Create an image.
- Enter a description, or choose a template and adapt its prompt.
- Optionally select Add an image to provide a visual reference.
- Choose a visual Style, such as Photorealistic, Surrealism, or Anime, if offered.
- If available, choose an organizational Brand and color.
- Choose Square, Portrait, or Wide.
- Select Create. Find supported images later in Copilot Library.
The labels and controls above follow Microsoft’s documented workflow; if you do not see them, your account may not have the same access or the feature may not have reached your region or platform. Microsoft documents shape choices, not a single universal pixel dimension, so check the actual export and destination requirements rather than assuming a fixed size.

Write a prompt that gives the image a job
A useful prompt describes both the subject and how the image will be used. Try this formula:
Subject + purpose + setting + composition + style + lighting or color + aspect ratio + constraints
For example, for a wide website banner:
Create a wide website hero image for a neighborhood bicycle repair shop. Show a friendly mechanic adjusting a red commuter bicycle inside a bright, tidy workshop. Use a warm editorial photography style, natural window light, and teal and orange accents. Leave generous empty space on the left for headline text. No words, lettering, logos, or watermarks in the image.
That prompt tells the generator what to depict, where it will appear, how to frame it, and what space to leave for the final design. The instruction to leave text out is especially useful: generated lettering, logos, labels, and small details can be distorted. Generate the visual first and add exact copy and approved brand assets afterward in a layout editor.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Two more starting points:
- Square social background: “Create a square, cheerful illustrated background for a community garden’s social post. Show hands planting seedlings in rich soil, with soft morning light, a limited green-and-yellow palette, and clear empty space in the upper third for a headline. No text or logos.”
- Portrait event-poster background: “Create a portrait-format painted background for a neighborhood watercolor workshop announcement. Show a sunlit table with brushes, a glass of water, and loose color swatches. Use an inviting, hand-painted editorial style; keep the central area uncluttered for event details. No lettering or logos.”
A vague prompt such as “make a cool art image” leaves the subject, use, composition, and mood open to guesswork. Improve it by choosing one clear subject, naming the intended output, describing the framing and style, and giving only the constraints that matter. Avoid combining unrelated visual ideas in one prompt.
Choose a format, style, and reference
Pick the shape to fit the destination, then describe the composition in the prompt as well. These are sensible starting points, not guarantees of final dimensions:
| Format | Good starting use |
|---|---|
| Square | Square social post or profile graphic |
| Portrait | Vertical story, poster, or mobile creative |
| Wide | Presentation banner, website hero, or newsletter header |
Use a style that supports the subject and audience: a photorealistic look may suit a product concept or editorial scene, while an illustrated or surreal approach may be better for a playful campaign or a painterly reference. Keep one coherent direction rather than asking for competing styles at once.
A reference image can help communicate visual direction, but it does not guarantee an exact reproduction. Use images you have permission to upload, and avoid assuming the tool will preserve every detail. If a brand kit is available, it may help guide colors; it does not make generated logos, fonts, or product marks dependable. Use approved brand assets in the final layout.
Rank #3
Improve a result with focused follow-ups
Do not rewrite the entire prompt after every imperfect result. Identify the biggest issue and change one thing at a time. A practical three-pass approach is:
- Composition: Fix subject placement, viewpoint, shape, background, or empty space.
- Visual direction: Adjust lighting, palette, materials, mood, or style.
- Cleanup: Simplify distracting details, remove unwanted objects, and prepare the image for final text and branding.
For example, if the bicycle in the banner has an obvious structural problem, try: “Keep the same workshop, subject, and warm lighting. Make the bicycle frame connect correctly to both wheels and remove the extra pedals.” If the scene is too busy, try: “Keep the mechanic and bicycle. Simplify the background and leave more clear space on the left.”
“Keep everything else unchanged” is a useful instruction, not a guarantee. Generative edits can change details you did not ask to change. Save or download a successful version before making a substantial revision, and compare the result with the original.
Edit an uploaded or generated image
In the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, Microsoft’s documented route is Create → More… → Edit an image. Select + Add an image to upload a file or drag it into the upload area, select Edit, then choose an available tool in the right-hand panel. Microsoft lists options such as cropping, changing or removing a background, enhancing an image, and applying filters; the set of controls can vary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor conversational edits in a Copilot image experience, keep requests specific: “Replace the background with a plain cream studio backdrop,” “Change the jacket from blue to forest green,” or “Remove the clutter behind the subject.” If the edit affects the wrong object, describe its position, color, and role, and request one change per turn. For precise masking or retouching, switch to a conventional image editor.
Finish the design outside the generator
For a finished banner, poster, or social graphic, a reliable workflow is to generate a clean visual, refine its composition, then add exact copy and branding in PowerPoint, Word, Designer, Canva, Adobe Express, or another editor suited to the job. This gives you control over spelling, type, logo placement, alignment, and legibility—areas where image generators are not dependable.
- Use approved logo files and brand fonts rather than asking the image generator to recreate them.
- Check that text remains readable at the actual display size and that foreground and background have sufficient contrast.
- Review the image for incorrect objects, anatomy, product details, and visual artifacts before publishing.
- For client, advertising, packaging, or regulated use, review Microsoft’s current terms, your organization’s rules, third-party rights, and any applicable disclosure requirements.
Where your images go
Microsoft says images made with Create in Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Chat are supported in Copilot Library, where you can manage supported creations. If an administrator disables image creation, the Images tab may be hidden. Library visibility and storage can also depend on the account and organizational settings.
Do not treat the Library as a substitute for your organization’s file-retention process. Download or export approved work to the appropriate location, following your team’s storage, sharing, and retention policies. For a personal project, keep a local or cloud copy if you will need the asset later.

When Copilot Create is—and is not—enough
| What you need | How Create fits |
|---|---|
| Fast concept art or a visual starting point | Strong fit: it can turn a description into a first draft quickly. |
| An occasional image for a presentation or social post | Good fit, especially if you are already working in Microsoft 365. |
| A text-heavy poster with exact copy | Use it for the background, then finish the layout in an editor. |
| Consistent branded campaign assets or repeated characters | May require a more controlled design workflow and approved assets. |
| Advanced retouching, masking, or precise color work | Use a dedicated image editor. |
| High-volume generation or predictable usage | Check your plan’s current limits and consider whether a specialized workflow is a better fit. |
For design-heavy templates and collaborative layout work, Canva may be a better fit. For people already using professional creative applications, Adobe Firefly is part of a broader Adobe ecosystem. Microsoft Designer is a closer Microsoft design-oriented option, though its features and entry points overlap with other Microsoft experiences and can change. Use PowerPoint or Word when the final deliverable is principally a slide or document and exact text control matters. For video, Clipchamp is relevant; Create’s video option requires it to be enabled by the organization.

Create is missing
Confirm that you are signed into the intended Microsoft account and try the Microsoft 365 Copilot web app. Check subscription eligibility and, for a work or school account, ask your administrator whether image creation is allowed. Region, platform, rollout, or temporary service availability can also affect what appears.
The image contains garbled text or a fake logo
Ask for no words, labels, lettering, logos, or watermarks; generate the background alone and add exact text and approved marks in a layout editor. Do not publish a generated brand mark as though it were an official asset.
The shape or composition is wrong
Choose Square, Portrait, or Wide before generating, repeat the intended use in your prompt, and specify where you need empty space. If necessary, crop or reframe the output in an editor. The selected shape does not guarantee a particular pixel size.

Results are slow, inconsistent, or unavailable
Usage limits and service demand can affect access and performance. Microsoft’s personal plans describe limits for AI features, and Microsoft says unlicensed users may see quality and availability vary. Check your account’s current plan information and try again later if the service is temporarily unavailable.
Access and plan details
Microsoft’s plan names, pricing, and benefits can change by country and date. Its US individual pricing page, checked in the supplied research on August 16, 2026, listed Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 per year, Family at $129.99 per year, and Premium at $199.99 per year. Microsoft described different usage levels for selected Copilot features and image creation or editing, with limits applying; Family AI features were described as available to the subscription owner, not automatically to every household member. These are dated US price observations, not a universal or permanent price list. Check Microsoft’s current individual plans before buying.
For organizations, Microsoft’s business pricing and eligibility depend on tenant, geography, configuration, and billing. The supplied research observed a displayed configuration of Business Premium with Copilot, without Teams, at $28.80 per user per month when paid yearly on August 16, 2026. Verify the current business pricing and licensing requirements for your organization rather than relying on that dated example.
