Look for visual inconsistencies, then check the image’s source and provenance. A strange hand or a detector flag can raise suspicion, but neither proves an image is fake. It may be fully generated, partly AI-edited, or a real photograph shared with a false caption. The safest approach is to combine several kinds of evidence and be precise about what they establish.
What counts as an AI image?
An image described as “AI” may have several different histories:
#1 Best Overall

- Fully generated: The scene and its people or objects were synthesized rather than captured by a camera.
- AI-edited: A real photograph was changed with generative fill, object replacement, or another AI editing feature.
- AI-enhanced: Tools such as denoising, upscaling, sharpening, portrait blur, or computational photography may use AI without making the scene fabricated.
- Miscontextualized: The image may be genuine, but its caption, date, location, or claim is false.
So ask not just “Is this image fake?” but “What, if anything, was generated or edited—and does the post’s claim check out?”
Can you spot an AI image by eye?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Image generators can produce convincing scenes, while compression, blur, retouching, and unusual lighting can make real photographs look odd. Research has found that people can struggle to distinguish realistic synthetic images by looking at pixels alone (study on identifying AI-generated images; more recent study). Treat visual clues as reasons to investigate, not as proof. Google likewise recommends checking small details, lighting, shadows, repetitive patterns, context, and metadata (Google’s image-checking guidance).
Six signs that justify a closer look
Start with the full image, then zoom into details. Crops can make ordinary blur or compression look suspicious, and may hide inconsistencies elsewhere in the scene.

1. Anatomy or small details do not hold together
Check hands, fingers, teeth, ears, eyes, and the boundaries between hair, skin, clothing, and objects. Extra or fused fingers, impossible joints, mismatched pupils, smeared teeth, or an earring that seems to pass through skin can be clues. They are not a standalone test: low resolution, motion blur, and compression can create similar defects, and newer generators often handle anatomy well.
2. Text, logos, or numbers become nonsense
Read signs, labels, packaging, jerseys, screens, menus, and license plates. Watch for misspellings, characters that change shape within a word, or logos that are nearly—but not quite—right. Generators may make convincing letter-like shapes without reliably reproducing exact text. But perspective, glare, motion blur, and a tiny display can also distort genuine writing. Crop and enlarge the detail, then compare a claimed logo or location sign with a known reference.
3. Shadows, reflections, or perspective contradict the scene
Look for shadows pointing in incompatible directions, highlights on the wrong side of objects, or a person’s shadow that does not match their pose. Check whether a mirror, window, or water reflection shows scenery that is absent from the scene. Buildings and furniture can also have lines or angles that bend inconsistently. These mismatches deserve attention, but flash, HDR, artistic lighting, and multiple real light sources can produce surprising effects.

4. Background patterns repeat or melt together
Inspect crowds, foliage, shelves, architecture, fabric, and other detailed backgrounds. Nearly identical faces, cloned-looking windows or plants, branches that join unnaturally, or objects that blur into one another can be warning signs. Google specifically recommends checking for unnatural repetitive patterns. Real scenes can also contain repetition, so look for several inconsistencies rather than treating one repeated shape as decisive.
5. Skin, hair, fabric, or surfaces look unnaturally finished
Plastic-smooth skin, hair rendered in solid ribbons, fabric folds that ignore the body, or jewelry that dissolves at the edges can raise suspicion. So can a sharply defined subject against a strangely vague background. This is a weak clue: studio lighting, retouching, filters, sharpening, and noise reduction can all make real photographs look polished.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. The source, context, or file history does not add up
Ask who first posted the image and whether the named photographer, event, place, and date can be corroborated. Look for earlier versions or different captions with reverse-image search. If you have the original file, inspect available camera metadata and Content Credentials. Google recommends both reverse-image searches and metadata checks (its guidance). A screenshot or social-media copy may have lost metadata, so its absence is inconclusive.

A free workflow for checking an image
1. Keep the best available original
Use the original file when possible, not a screenshot, thumbnail, or image re-saved through an editor. Check provenance before cropping or converting it. OpenAI says its verifier works best when the image has not been cropped or converted, because those changes can interfere with provenance signals (OpenAI’s verification page).
2. Inspect the whole scene, then the details
Check the six areas above: anatomy, text, lighting and reflections, repeated patterns, surfaces and edges, and overall perspective. Note what specifically seems inconsistent rather than relying on a vague impression that the image “looks AI.”
3. Search for the image and its claim
Use reverse-image search or Google Lens to look for an earlier version, a source publication, a different caption, or photographs from the same event. A match may reveal that a real image was recycled out of context. No match does not prove the image is new or synthetic; newly posted images may not be indexed, and search results can include unrelated lookalikes.

4. Check for provenance information
Content Credentials based on C2PA can record information about a file’s origin and editing history. They are provenance records, not universal AI detectors or proof that the scene depicts reality. A credential may be missing, removed, or invalidated by later processing. OpenAI explains C2PA and SynthID in its overview of provenance signals in its generated images.
5. Use a source-specific checker if the likely source is known
- OpenAI Verify: Upload the best original to OpenAI’s public verifier to check for supported OpenAI-related C2PA metadata or SynthID signals. A positive result is evidence of involvement by the supported OpenAI tools; a negative result means only that no supported signal was found.
- Gemini: Google says signed-in Gemini users can ask about or upload supported images, video, or audio to check for Google’s SynthID watermark and supported Content Credentials. A SynthID match indicates Google AI created or edited all or part of the content. No match does not rule out another generator; unclear or invalid results are not a basis for a definitive claim. Availability can vary by account, region, and product edition. See Google’s current instructions and scope.
SynthID embeds a signal in media rather than relying only on ordinary metadata. Google describes its approach and detector in its DeepMind explanation and detector announcement. Its tools are designed to identify supported Google-generated content, not every image made with AI.
6. Treat general detectors as a second opinion
For an image with an unknown source, a general-purpose detector can help with triage. These services classify image patterns; their scores are not necessarily calibrated probabilities. Free access can also mean a limited web tool or extension rather than unlimited, private processing.
| Tool | Best use | Free signal described by the provider | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Verify | Checking a suspected OpenAI-origin image | Public upload-based check for supported OpenAI provenance signals | Not a general detector for images from every generator; a negative result is inconclusive. |
| Gemini verification | Checking suspected Google-generated or edited content | Verification through Gemini for signed-in users, subject to availability | Primarily checks supported Google signals, not all AI systems. |
| Illuminarty | General image classification | Basic detection is listed as free | Localization and model identification are listed with paid tiers; the classification is not proof. See its plan information. |
| Hive Detect | Quick checks of uploaded images or media URLs; browser triage | Free detection tools and a Chrome extension are advertised; an image demo is available | Scores and likely model attributions are probabilistic, and coverage varies. Its API documentation describes generation and source classifications. |
Illuminarty’s official pricing page listed Basic at $10 per month and Pro at $30 per month when checked in August 2026; plans may change. Occasional users can generally begin with free checks, reverse search, and source-specific verification rather than paying for a detector. Hive’s consumer tools are convenient, but review extension permissions and privacy terms before using them on confidential images.

| What you find | What you can reasonably conclude |
|---|---|
| A supported provenance signal is found | There is strong evidence that the named tool or ecosystem was involved. It does not by itself establish whether the image’s caption is true or whether the whole image was generated. |
| Two general detectors agree | Suspicion rises, but this is still not proof. Tools can share limitations and may not be independent in the statistical sense. |
| One detector flags and another clears | The result is unresolved. Check the source, context, and any specific visual inconsistencies. |
| No detector finds a signal | No supported signal was found. The image may still be AI-generated, AI-edited, or from an unsupported source. |
| Metadata is missing | The copy has no usable metadata. Screenshots, resizing, recompression, and conversion can remove it. |
| Visual errors appear alongside a false or unsupported context | The post may be misleading even if you cannot establish how the image was made. |
General detectors can struggle with unfamiliar generators, partly edited photographs, compression, screenshots, filters, upscaling, unusual real lighting, and image types such as anime, paintings, memes, collages, or scientific images. Studies of detectors have found variation across tools and image types (detector evaluation; study of free detectors on scientific images). A label such as “90% AI” should not be rewritten as “there is a 90% chance this is fake” unless the service documents that its score is calibrated for that interpretation.
Choose the check that fits the question
- Suspect a particular platform: Start with its supported provenance checker and the original file.
- Need to know whether an event or claim is real: Prioritize the source, reverse-image search, and independent reporting. Pixel classification cannot establish what happened.
- Do not know the generator: Use one or two general detectors as triage, alongside visual and context checks.
- Cannot safely upload the image: Inspect it locally and search for its source. Avoid sending confidential images to third-party services.
Uploading can disclose faces, location clues, private documents, medical information, copyrighted work, or unreleased products. For sensitive material, check each service’s data-handling terms or avoid uploading it.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- “The hands look normal, so it is real.” A convincing image may have no obvious artifacts.
- “The hands look wrong, so it is AI.” Blur, compression, and small image size can produce similar defects.
- “There is no metadata, so it is authentic.” Metadata can disappear during ordinary sharing and editing.
- “A detector says AI, so the creator lied.” A technical classification does not establish intent, disclosure, or whether the image was used deceptively.
- “AI-generated means misinformation.” An image may be disclosed artwork or satire; a genuine photo can also mislead when paired with a false caption.
- “A real photograph cannot contain AI edits.” A real camera image may have generated additions, removals, or background changes.
