The male model for Grant Wood’s American Gothic was Dr. Byron McKeeby, Wood’s dentist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. McKeeby was a dentist in real life; the stern figure he modeled for is depicted as a farmer.
Who modeled for the man in American Gothic?
Grant Wood used his dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby, as the model for the painting’s male figure. The University of Iowa’s Grant Wood Art Colony spells his first name “Bryon,” while the American Gothic House Center refers to him as Dr. McKeeby. These spellings refer to the same sitter.

Was McKeeby really a farmer?
No. McKeeby was a dentist; the farmer is the role Wood gave the figure in the painting. The distinction matters because the picture’s familiar couple is not a portrait of a real farmer and his wife.

Who modeled for the woman?
Wood’s sister, Nan Wood Graham, modeled for the woman. The Whitney Museum says Wood’s dentist and sister modeled separately, rather than posing together as a couple. The American Gothic House Center also identifies Graham and McKeeby as the two models: American Gothic House Center, “The Painting”.

The house was the starting point for American Gothic, rather than a real couple posed in front of it, according to the Whitney Museum’s account. Wood then used McKeeby and Graham separately as models for the figures. He painted the work in 1930.
