Microsoft has already retired Paint 3D as a downloadable Microsoft Store app. The company deprecated it in August 2024 and removed it from the Store on November 4, 2024. An installation that is already on a Windows PC is expected to keep working, but it is no longer receiving normal Store support or updates. There is no single replacement: choose a 2D editor, painting app, 3D modeler, or viewer according to the work you actually need to do.
What happened to Paint 3D?
Microsoft’s Windows documentation records the change as a completed retirement, not a future plan. The status and dates are:

Can you still use Paint 3D if it is installed?
Yes, Microsoft says existing installations will continue to work. That means “still launches today,” not “supported forever.” Future Windows changes, dependencies, graphics drivers, account state, or a damaged installation could affect reliability, and Microsoft does not promise compatibility with every later update.
- Do not uninstall it if it remains important to your workflow.
- Open several representative projects before a Windows upgrade, reset, or hardware change.
- Export important images as PNG or JPEG and 3D work to a standard format when the app permits it.
- Keep original project files in a separate backup location.
- Install and test a replacement while Paint 3D still opens.
- Avoid random AppX packages, repacked installers, and unofficial mirrors; they are unsupported and can introduce malware.
If you already removed Paint 3D, there is no normal Microsoft Store reinstall path after November 4, 2024. Microsoft’s documentation does not provide a supported post-removal download.
What Paint 3D was designed to do
Paint 3D was a beginner-oriented hybrid rather than a professional 3D or CAD package. It combined basic 2D editing with simple 3D objects, imported models and stickers, casual scene composition, color and texture adjustments, and straightforward export and sharing. Its strength was approachability; its tools were not intended for precision engineering, advanced animation, or production rendering.

Best replacement for simple image editing
Microsoft Paint
Use Microsoft Paint when your work is fundamentally 2D: crop, resize, annotate screenshots, draw, remove a background, or assemble a simple image. Current Paint documentation covers layers and selection tools, and Microsoft advertises Cocreator and other AI features on eligible Copilot+ PCs. Availability can depend on Windows and app versions, hardware, account, region, and staged rollout.

Paint is not a substitute for creating or editing 3D geometry. Microsoft’s own guidance separates Paint or Photos for 2D work from a 3D viewer for 3D content.
Paint.NET
Paint.NET is a Windows-focused editor for users who need layers, selections, image cleanup, resizing, and more control than basic Paint. Its official page listed version 5.1.12, dated March 8, 2026, and support for Windows 10 version 21H2 or newer, Windows 11, Windows Server 2022, 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processors, and Direct3D 11-capable graphics hardware. Windows Ink tablets are optional.
Those requirements and the displayed version are time-sensitive; check the official page before installing. Paint.NET remains a 2D editor, not a 3D modeler.

Best replacement for digital painting
Krita
Krita is the strongest fit when the creative part of Paint 3D mattered more than its 3D objects. It is free software for illustration, comics, concept art, brush-based painting, and layered artwork. The official page listed Krita 5.3.2.1, released June 1, 2026, with a Windows 64-bit download and support for Windows 8.1 and later.

Krita offers a substantially broader painting workflow than Paint, but it does not reproduce Paint 3D’s simple 3D-object placement. Choose it for drawing and painting, not for modeling.
Best replacement for easy 3D modeling
SketchUp Free
SketchUp Free is a browser-based modeler aimed at approachable geometry and quick scenes. The free tier advertises browser modeling, 10 GB of Trimble Connect storage, mobile model viewing, 3D Warehouse access, and import/export options including SKP, JPG, PNG, and STL as described on the official page. It requires no credit card for the free version.
This is a better starting point than Blender for simple rooms, household objects, layouts, and basic visualization. The trade-off is that the workflow is primarily online: browser access, an account, and cloud storage are part of the experience. It is not an offline-first replacement, and the free tier is not the same product as SketchUp’s paid desktop offerings.

Best free upgrade for serious 3D work
Blender
Blender is free and open-source software for modeling, sculpting, materials, lighting, animation, rendering, and extensive file workflows. It is the long-term choice for readers who have outgrown Paint 3D, not the easiest one-click substitute.
Blender’s official download page offers Windows installers, portable builds, Windows ARM builds, previous versions, and LTS releases. Its requirements page lists Windows 8.1 64-bit as the minimum, Windows 10 or 11 as recommended, 8 GB RAM minimum and 32 GB recommended, plus a supported GPU; the recommended configuration lists 8 GB of VRAM. x64 and ARM64 are supported.
Expect a much steeper learning curve than Paint 3D. Blender’s interface, navigation, modifiers, materials, cameras, and rendering concepts reward structured learning. It is appropriate for animation, printable models, realistic rendering, and advanced editing, but excessive for someone who only wants to place a few objects on a picture.

Best option when you only need to view a 3D file
Babylon.js Sandbox
Microsoft identifies Babylon.js Sandbox as an alternative for viewing 3D content. Treat it as a viewer-oriented web tool, not a complete Paint 3D replacement. Check its current supported formats and browser behavior for the particular STL, OBJ, GLB, or other file you need to inspect. Do not assume it opens Paint 3D project files directly.

Microsoft’s documentation also notes the planned removal of 3D Viewer from the Store on July 1, 2026, so 3D Viewer is not a durable recommendation for new users.
Choose by the task, not by the app name
- “I crop, resize, or annotate images.” Choose Microsoft Paint.
- “I need layers but want a simple Windows desktop app.” Choose Paint.NET.
- “I draw, paint, or make illustrations.” Choose Krita.
- “I want simple 3D objects or room layouts in a browser.” Try SketchUp Free.
- “I need animation, rendering, sculpting, or advanced modeling.” Learn Blender.
- “I only inspect 3D files.” Use Babylon.js Sandbox or another dedicated viewer.
- “I need measured, printable parts.” Use a CAD-oriented tool; its dimensional control is more appropriate than a casual art application.
How to migrate old Paint 3D projects safely
- Keep the existing Paint 3D installation if it is still valuable.
- Open your most important projects and confirm that they load correctly.
- Export finished images to common formats such as PNG or JPEG.
- Export 3D assets to a standard format available in your workflow, and verify that geometry, textures, materials, transparency, and camera views survive.
- Keep the original Paint 3D files alongside the exports; do not treat a conversion as a perfect copy.
- Install the replacement and test representative exports before deleting or resetting anything.
- Back up the project folder to a separate drive or trusted storage service.
No alternative listed here is confirmed as a universal, direct importer for Paint 3D project files. Conversion can lose textures, materials, layers, scene arrangement, or other application-specific data, so inspect the result rather than assuming compatibility.
If an installed copy stops launching
A failure can result from a Windows update, damaged app registration, changed dependencies, a corrupted user profile, a project-specific fault, or graphics-driver incompatibility. There is no guaranteed repair, but this order limits risk:
- Restart Windows.
- Try opening Paint 3D to a blank session rather than opening a project.
- Test a different project to distinguish an app problem from a damaged file.
- Back up project files before using any reset or repair command.
- Use Windows’ built-in app repair or reset options only after preserving your data.
- If the app remains unreliable, migrate to a supported alternative instead of depending on an unsupported installation.
What Microsoft’s replacement guidance means
Microsoft’s documented split is practical: use Paint or Photos for viewing and editing 2D images, and Babylon.js Sandbox for viewing 3D content. That is supported direction, not a promise that either tool replaces every Paint 3D feature. Users who created 3D objects need a separate modeling application such as SketchUp Free or Blender; users who painted need an art application such as Krita.
Final verdict
Paint 3D is already gone from the Microsoft Store, but an installed copy may continue to work. Preserve important projects now rather than relying on a future reinstall. For quick 2D work, choose Paint or Paint.NET; for painting, choose Krita; for approachable browser 3D, choose SketchUp Free; for serious 3D creation, choose Blender; and for viewing alone, use a dedicated viewer such as Babylon.js Sandbox. The right replacement is defined by the task Paint 3D was performing, not by finding one app with the same name.
