Procreate is the best starting point for most iPad illustration and painting; Adobe Fresco is the strongest free choice. For vector logos, comics, or exploratory diagrams, a specialist app is a better fit. The right choice depends on whether you want to paint with pixels, build scalable paths, make comic pages, or sketch across an open canvas. This comparison focuses on those differences rather than treating every kind of drawing as the same job.
Quick picks: which iPad drawing app should you choose?
| App | Best for | Art type | Cost model | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Procreate | Painting and illustration | Primarily raster | One-time purchase; no subscription | Not a general-purpose vector editor |
| Adobe Fresco | Free drawing and painting | Raster, vector, and live brushes | Free app; Adobe plans are separate | Wider Adobe workflows may depend on accounts or paid services |
| Affinity Designer 2 | Logos, branding, and vector illustration | Vector and raster workspaces | Check current App Store price | More complex than a painting-first app |
| Clip Studio Paint | Comics, manga, and webtoons | Raster and vector tools | iPad subscription options; verify current terms | Steeper learning curve and plan complexity |
| Concepts | Ideation and diagrams | Flexible, object-based sketching | Free entry with paid features or plans | Less suited to polished natural-media painting |
| Linearity Curve | Vector graphics on Apple devices | Vector-focused | Check current plan and feature limits | Not a substitute for a painting-focused app |
Prices and subscription details can change, and the available choices may differ outside the United States. Check the current App Store listing or vendor plan page before buying. A feature described as free applies to the named app, not necessarily to a vendor’s wider software ecosystem.

Raster, vector, or hybrid: the distinction that matters first
Raster apps are built for painting
Raster images consist of pixels. That makes them a natural fit for brushwork, shading, texture, character art, and concept painting. Procreate and Photoshop are raster-first examples. Raster work can look excellent at its intended size, but enlarging it too far can expose pixelation.

Vector apps are built for scalable artwork
Vector art uses mathematically defined paths rather than a fixed grid of pixels. It is usually the better choice for logos, icons, typography, packaging, and artwork that must scale cleanly across sizes. Affinity Designer, Illustrator, Linearity Curve, and Amadine are vector-oriented choices.
Hybrid apps cover more than one kind of work
Adobe Fresco combines pixel, vector, and live brushes; Affinity Designer has vector and pixel workspaces; Clip Studio Paint offers raster and vector layers in a broader illustration and comic-making environment. A hybrid tool gives you options, but it does not necessarily replace a specialist app for every task.
Best overall for painting and illustration: Procreate
Choose Procreate if you mainly want to draw, paint, letter, or make character and concept art on an iPad, and prefer a focused touch-first workspace over a subscription. Its [official feature page](https://procreate.com/procreate) describes more than 300 handmade brushes, brush customization, QuickShape, StreamLine, Drawing Assist, layers, blend modes, Page Assist, animation, and 3D painting. The [US App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/procreate/id425073498?mt=8) also describes PSD import and export, time-lapse, and frame-by-frame animation with GIF and MP4 export.

- Painting, sketching, illustration, lettering, and character work.
- Artists who want a broad brush toolkit without a recurring subscription for this app.
- Simple animation, storyboards, and multi-page concepts through its animation features and Page Assist.
Where it falls short
Procreate is primarily raster-based, not a full vector design application. It is therefore not the right primary tool when a logo or illustration must remain infinitely scalable as paths. Page Assist helps organize multi-page work, but does not make Procreate equivalent to a dedicated comic-production environment. Very large canvases and complex documents can also run into practical limits set by the iPad’s memory and performance.
Procreate’s site states that the app has no subscription and is available through the App Store. The live US purchase price should be checked in the listing, since store prices can change.

Best free drawing app: Adobe Fresco
Adobe positions Fresco as a free iPad drawing and painting app with Apple Pencil support, raster brushes, scalable vector brushes, and live brushes intended to simulate natural media. Adobe also lists animation tools and unlimited layers. See [Adobe’s Fresco page](https://www.adobe.com/products/fresco.html) for the current feature description.
Fresco is a strong first download if you want to try painting without paying for the app, or want to move between pixel and vector brushwork. “Unlimited layers” refers to the app’s stated limit, not a guarantee that every iPad can run a huge document smoothly: canvas size, memory, color depth, and complexity still matter.

Best for vector graphics and logos: Affinity Designer 2
Affinity Designer 2 is the better match when your drawing is really graphic design: logos, icons, branding, posters, stickers, typography, or print-oriented illustration. Its [iPad App Store description](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/affinity-designer-2-for-ipad/id1616833418) lists vector and pixel workspaces, Pen and Node tools, artboards, typography, Boolean operations, professional color modes, and support for formats including Ai, PSD, PDF, EPS, SVG, JPG, TIFF, DXF, and DWG.
That breadth makes it more appropriate than Procreate for path-based artwork and production-oriented design. Its interface is denser, though, and the tools may feel excessive for casual sketching or natural-media painting. The App Store listing specifies iPadOS 15 or later and Apple Pencil pressure, tilt, and angle support; verify the current requirements and compatibility for your iPad before installing.

Left-handed friendly, and you just need to flip the tablet and adjust the settings in the driver. Please note: H640P does NOT support iPhone/iPad.
- Move Beyond the Mouse: Huion Inspiroy H640P is a pen tablet that replaces your mouse for more natural, precise control. Freehand draw, take notes, or even play OSU—everything you do with a mouse, you can do better with a pen. The precise tip makes it ideal for detailed photo editing, graphic design, or signing PDF. Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
File-format support is not a promise of perfect round-tripping. A complex Illustrator file can change if it uses fonts, effects, linked assets, clipping paths, or features that do not transfer. Keep the original file and inspect the imported document before relying on it for delivery. Check the current App Store listing for the purchase price and licensing terms.
Best for comics, manga, and webtoons: Clip Studio Paint
Clip Studio Paint is aimed at a production workflow rather than only making a single finished image. Its comic and illustration toolset is suited to panel layouts, page management, speech balloons and lettering, perspective rulers, screen tones, inking, and 3D pose references. It also supports animation workflows. The [publisher’s guide to iPad drawing apps](https://www.clipstudio.net/how-to-draw/archives/167369) includes Clip Studio Paint alongside several alternatives.
Pick it if those page and comic tools matter enough to justify learning a more involved interface. On iPad, plan and edition details can vary; check the current official purchase options or App Store listing for the billing period and included capabilities rather than assuming one price covers every version. If you only want to paint or doodle, its specialist features may be more than you need.
Best for an infinite-canvas sketchbook: Concepts
Concepts is designed for visual thinking: early product ideas, architecture sketches, diagrams, planning, and notes you want to move or rearrange. Its open-ended canvas and flexible sketching workflow suit exploration better than a conventional fixed-page painting app.
It is not the first choice for advanced digital painting, comic-page production, or a traditional layer-based illustration workflow. Some tools require an upgrade, and export details depend on the plan; check [Concepts’ current site](https://concepts.app/) for what is included before building a workflow around a particular format.

Other iPad drawing apps worth considering
Linearity Curve: vector design in the Apple ecosystem
Linearity Curve is a vector-focused option for logos, branding, social graphics, and scalable illustration. It is worth comparing with Affinity Designer if you want a design-oriented alternative to Illustrator. The [2026 comparison from Linearity](https://www.linearity.io/blog/best-drawing-apps-for-ipad-in-2026/) positions Curve for vector design and Procreate for general iPad drawing. Check Curve’s current plan structure and verify any required file compatibility before committing; vector focus does not make it a natural-media painting replacement.
Autodesk Sketchbook: straightforward sketching
Sketchbook is a candidate for uncomplicated drawing and a relatively uncluttered starting point, particularly if you also use other platforms. A [TechRadar comparison](https://www.techradar.com/pro/best-drawing-apps) lists it across iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows. Current mobile features and pricing should be checked with the app publisher because availability and plan details can change.
ibis Paint: beginner and anime-oriented drawing
ibis Paint is popular with mobile-first and anime or fan-art workflows. It can be an accessible entry point, but ads or paid unlocks may affect the experience, and a busy interface may take adjustment. Check the current listing for export, cloud, and payment details if those are important to you.
Artstudio Pro: another painting-focused option
Artstudio Pro is an alternative to compare if your priority is raster painting rather than vector design. The available information here does not establish current pricing or a complete feature comparison, so check its current App Store listing before choosing it over Procreate or Fresco.

Notes and Freeform: enough for marks and visual notes
For handwritten annotation, a quick doodle, or a rough shared sketch, Apple Notes or Freeform may be all you need. They avoid the setup of a dedicated art studio; they are not replacements for a full painting, vector, or comic-production toolset.

Choose by the work you want to make
- Painting or illustration: Start with Procreate for a focused paid app without a subscription, or Fresco if free access and mixed brush types matter most.
- Vector logos or scalable graphics: Compare Affinity Designer 2 with Illustrator or Linearity Curve. Prioritize path editing, typography, color handling, and the formats your clients need.
- Comics, manga, or webtoons: Choose Clip Studio Paint for dedicated page and panel tools; use Procreate when your needs are simpler and Page Assist is enough.
- Brainstorming, diagrams, or product concepts: Try Concepts’ infinite-canvas approach rather than forcing the work into a conventional painting canvas.
- Already paying for Adobe: Fresco is a sensible free companion; Illustrator or Photoshop may fit if your projects rely on those ecosystems.
- Only sketching or annotating: Start with Notes or Freeform before paying for professional features you may not use.
Check your iPad, Pencil, files, and workflow before committing
Confirm device and stylus support
“Works on iPad” is not enough to establish that every feature works on your device. Check the current minimum iPadOS version, supported iPad models, and Apple Pencil generation in the app’s listing. Pressure, tilt, hover, squeeze, and barrel-roll features depend on the particular Pencil and iPad combination. Adobe says Fresco works with iPad and Apple Pencil, while Affinity’s listing names pressure, tilt, and angle support; consult those current listings for the details relevant to your hardware.
Match document demands to the iPad
Older or lower-memory iPads may be fine for small sketches but less suitable for high-resolution print files, many layers, 3D references, animation, or complex vector documents. Procreate’s App Store listing says compatible iPad Pro models can handle canvases up to 16K by 8K; that is not a promise for every iPad. Large canvases and high bit-depth documents can also reduce the practical number of layers, even where an app does not impose a formal layer cap.
Test the actual handoff format
Before selecting an app for client or print work, confirm whether it can import and export the required file as editable content or only as a flattened image. PSD, PDF, SVG, EPS, and Illustrator support can mean different things in different apps. Check text, fonts, effects, linked images, layers, color settings, and output dimensions in a sample file rather than relying on the format name alone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Consider accounts, cloud use, and keeping a portable copy
Some workflows rely on vendor accounts or cloud services, which may matter if you work offline or with confidential material. Save a portable export such as PSD, PDF, SVG, or TIFF when it suits the project, in addition to the app’s native file. A native format can preserve app-specific editability, but it can also make a project harder to move later.
How to make the final choice
For most people who mean “draw and paint,” Procreate is the clearest default. Choose Fresco when a free app is the deciding factor, Affinity Designer or another vector tool when clean scaling and design controls matter, Clip Studio Paint for a comic-production workflow, and Concepts when the canvas is primarily a place to think. If you are unsure, identify the file you need to deliver and the kind of artwork you will make most often; those two requirements usually narrow the field faster than a feature-count comparison.
