There is no single cross-industry “Color of the Year.” For 2025, paint, spray-paint and color organizations announced separate selections. The major announcements identified so far include Behr’s ruby red Rumors, Benjamin Moore’s plum-brown Cinnamon Slate, Pantone’s Mocha Mousse, Valspar’s blue Encore, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams’ sage Quietude, Dutch Boy’s Mapped Blue, Krylon’s spray-paint Hammered Black and Sherwin-Williams’ nine-color capsule.
How to read this 2025 roundup
“Every” here means the major 2025 selections identified across prominent paint and color brands, not a provably complete list of every designation worldwide. Smaller paint, wallpaper, flooring and design organizations may have announced additional colors. The choices also serve different products: most are architectural paint colors, while Krylon’s is a spray-paint selection and Pantone’s is a cross-industry color designation.

Behr Rumors: a confident ruby red
Behr announced Rumors on August 21, 2024. It is a deep ruby red with enough intensity to act as a focal color on an accent wall, cabinetry or a smaller room. Because it is a Behr color, availability depends on the Behr paint line and current Home Depot stock rather than on a universal color standard.

Behr’s 2024 company research reported that 76% of Americans would consider painting a room or wall red and that 60% said red in home design makes them feel energized. Those figures are Behr-conducted research, not an independent industry survey, and the retrieved announcement does not establish the study’s method or sample.
Benjamin Moore Cinnamon Slate: plum softened with brown
Cinnamon Slate 2113-40 combines a heathered plum cast with velvety brown. Benjamin Moore announced it on October 16, 2024 as the lead shade in its 10-color Color Trends 2025 palette. The brown component makes the color feel more grounded than a bright purple, while the plum undertone remains visible in changing light.

Benjamin Moore’s announcement directs readers to order samples. Test a chip or sample board against the room’s natural and artificial light before committing; the apparent balance between plum and brown can shift substantially by exposure and surrounding finishes.
Pantone Mocha Mousse: the cross-industry designation
Pantone selected PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse as its 2025 Color of the Year. Unlike a paint company’s formula-specific announcement, Pantone’s designation is a broader color reference used across industries. Pantone describes an exclusive Lowe’s collaboration involving Valspar paint lines. The Pantone page itself was unavailable when checked, so the collaboration detail should be confirmed against current Pantone and Lowe’s information before purchase.

Valspar Encore: a saturated blue for paint projects
Encore 8002-45G is Valspar’s 2025 selection. Valspar’s release says the color can be tinted across a selection of its formulas and is available through Lowe’s. Since tinting and sheen options vary by formula, use the exact product and finish you plan to buy when evaluating a sample.
HGTV Home Quietude: a blue-leaning sage
Quietude HGSW6212 is a softened sage green with a slight blue influence. HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams placed it in the Naturally Refined collection, making it a quieter, lower-intensity option than the ruby, plum and saturated-blue selections elsewhere in the 2025 announcements.

Dutch Boy Mapped Blue: a straightforward blue selection
Mapped Blue 429-5DB is Dutch Boy’s 2025 Color of the Year. The designation identifies the shade and code, but the announcement does not provide a shared cross-brand scoring system for comparing its saturation or undertone with Valspar Encore or other blues. Compare physical samples in your own lighting rather than treating the title as a ranking.

Hammered Black is Krylon’s 2025 Color of the Year and belongs to the spray-paint category. Sherwin-Williams’ nine-color capsule
For its 15th year, Sherwin-Williams changed from naming one shade to curating a nine-color Color Capsule of the Year. The colors are:
- Grounded SW 6089
- Sunbleached SW 9585
- Chartreuse SW 0073
- Rain Cloud SW 9639
- Clove SW 9605
- Malabar SW 9110
- Bosc Pear SW 6390
- White Snow SW 9541
- Mauve Finery SW 6282
Sherwin-Williams says the shades are designed to function as a whole palette or in selected pairings. That makes this announcement structurally different from a single-color pick: you can use one shade as a starting point, combine several for adjacent rooms, or select a coordinated pair for walls and trim. Sherwin-Williams lists sample and free color-chip routes for these colors.
How the selections compare
| Hue family | 2025 examples | Relative character | Designation type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red | Behr Rumors | Deep, energetic ruby | Single architectural-paint color |
| Plum and brown | Benjamin Moore Cinnamon Slate | Muted, warm and earthy | Single color within a 10-color palette |
| Brown | Pantone Mocha Mousse | Soft, warm neutral | Cross-industry color designation |
| Blue | Valspar Encore; Dutch Boy Mapped Blue | Blue choices with different formulas and brand contexts | Single paint colors |
| Blue-green | HGTV Home Quietude | Soft sage with a blue influence | Single color in a collection |
| Black | Krylon Hammered Black | Dark color paired with a hammered spray finish | Spray-paint selection |
| Mixed palette | Sherwin-Williams capsule | Neutrals, earth tones, yellow-green, blue-gray and mauve | Nine-color coordinated capsule |
How to choose one for your project
- Match the product category. Choose architectural paint for walls, trim or cabinetry; choose Krylon Hammered Black only when a spray-paint product and its finish suit the surface.
- Identify the undertone. Hold samples beside flooring, countertops and upholstery. Plum, blue and sage can change noticeably beside warm or cool neutrals.
- Sample before buying gallons. Paint a large board or order the brand’s sample. Sherwin-Williams offers samples and free chips for its capsule, and Benjamin Moore directs customers to sample ordering.
- Check the exact formula and retailer. Behr points buyers to The Home Depot; Valspar identifies Lowe’s. Formula, sheen, stock and sample options can change, so verify them at purchase.
- Use a capsule when you need coordination. Sherwin-Williams’ nine shades are the clearest choice when you want a ready-made multi-room or pairing strategy rather than one headline color.
What “Color of the Year” does—and does not—mean
These announcements are directional selections, not a common competition or objective ranking. A color’s suitability still depends on light, room size, existing materials, sheen and the paint formula. The 2025 list also mixes single shades, collection members, a coordinated capsule and a spray finish, so there is no fair universal “best” color.
