The fastest method depends on the sign material. For a routed wooden sign with recessed letters, spray paint into the cavities from several angles, let it dry completely, then sand or plane the face until the excess paint is removed. Use passes of no more than 1/64 inch to reduce grain tear-out around the lettering. Plastic, Plexiglas, and reverse-engraved plates require different filling techniques.
Choose the method for your sign
| Sign construction | Recommended approach | How excess paint is controlled |
|---|---|---|
| Routed wood with a bare or clear-coated face | Spray the recesses from several angles, allow complete drying, then sand or plane the face | Remove overpaint mechanically in light passes |
| Solid-color engraved plastic | Fill the engraving with contrasting paint when needed | Apply only to the recessed pattern; laminated plastic may already reveal a contrasting core |
| Engraved Plexiglas | Use a paint stick or suitable enamel paint | Fill the recess carefully after confirming product compatibility |
| Reverse-engraved plate or badge | Mask areas that should remain unpainted, then apply acrylic | Masking and controlled two-coat application |
Best method for recessed letters in a wooden sign
1. Confirm the construction
This process is for letters routed below the wood surface, where the face can be sanded or machined afterward. It works especially well when the surrounding face is intended to remain bare wood under a clear finish. Do not use this sand-back process on a surface that cannot safely lose a thin layer of material.
2. Spray into the recesses
Use a suitable spray paint and direct it into the engraved characters from several angles. Angled passes help cover the vertical sidewalls that a straight-on spray can miss. Several light coats may be needed rather than one heavy coat.

3. Let the paint dry completely
Do not sand or plane while the lettering paint is soft. Wait until it has fully dried according to the paint manufacturer’s instructions; otherwise it can smear, clog abrasive paper, or pull out of the recesses.
4. Remove the paint from the face
Use a surface planer, drum sander, or portable sander to take off the paint that remains on the raised face. Make passes of 1/64 inch or less. Work carefully around the characters because aggressive cuts can tear wood fibers at the edges.

5. Stop as soon as the face is clean
Remove only enough material to expose clean wood. Inspect the letter edges frequently and avoid deepening the sign face unnecessarily. You can then apply the intended clear or protective finish, provided that finish is compatible with both the wood and the lettering paint.
Filling engraved plastic and Plexiglas
Solid-color or laminated engraving plastic
Engraved solid-color plastic can be filled with contrasting paint. With laminated engraving plastic, machining may expose a contrasting core already, so paint is not automatically necessary. Decide whether the exposed core provides enough contrast before adding a coating.

Plexiglas
For engraved Plexiglas, a paint stick or enamel paint can be used to fill the letters. Check that the product is intended for the specific Plexiglas surface and follow its preparation, drying, and cleanup directions. Unlike the wooden-sign method, do not plan to sand the entire face to remove excess unless the material and finish instructions explicitly allow it.
Reverse-engraved plates and badges
Mask before painting
For a reverse-engraved plate, mask the areas that should not receive paint. Good masking keeps acrylic out of the surrounding face and makes the edges easier to clean.

Apply acrylic in two directions
For spray filling, apply two coats of acrylic, passing from opposite directions so paint reaches the character edges. Liquid acrylic can also be applied with an inexpensive foam brush; two coats will generally be needed.
Paint the back when show-through is a concern
With the reverse-engraved construction described by the supplier, covering the back of the finished sign or badge with paint can reduce shadows visible through the front. Treat this as a construction-specific step, not a universal requirement for every engraved sign.

How to choose the paint
There is no single formulation established as suitable for every wood coating, plastic, Plexiglas surface, and sign finish. Select paint for the substrate and the way you will control excess: spray paint for the routed-wood sand-back process, acrylic for the described reverse-engraved technique, and a paint stick or enamel as options for Plexiglas.
Ronan One Stroke Lettering Enamel is marketed as a high-hiding, high-gloss sign-lettering paint that can be applied by brush, roller, spray, or airbrush. It may be a candidate for some engraved-letter applications, but its product information does not establish compatibility with every sign material or finish. Verify current instructions and test on a scrap or hidden area first.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Brushing every character individually: On routed wood, spraying the recesses and cleaning the face afterward is usually faster.
- Using heavy coats: Excess paint can pool, obscure edges, or take longer to dry; use controlled coats and full drying time.
- Skipping sidewall coverage: Spray from multiple angles so the vertical walls of the engraving are coated.
- Sanding too aggressively: On wood, keep each pass to 1/64 inch or less to limit tear-out.
- Assuming all plastics behave like wood: Plastic and Plexiglas generally call for direct filling, not sanding the face down.
- Ignoring the reverse side: Reverse-engraved signs may show distracting shadows unless the back is painted as part of the construction.
- Choosing by color alone: Confirm adhesion, solvent resistance, drying, and finish compatibility for the exact substrate.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify whether the letters are recessed into wood, solid-color plastic, laminated plastic, Plexiglas, or a reverse-engraved plate.
- Decide whether the surrounding face may be sanded or planed.
- Choose a compatible spray, acrylic, enamel, or paint-stick product according to the substrate.
- Test the process and color on scrap or an inconspicuous area.
- Apply enough coats to cover the recesses without flooding the face.
- Allow complete drying before sanding, cleaning, or handling.
- Inspect the letter edges and finish the sign only after the fill is sound.
