In graphic design, “AI format” usually means Adobe Illustrator Artwork: the proprietary .ai document format used to create and edit artwork in Adobe Illustrator. It is mainly used for vector designs, but an AI file can also contain raster images. If you mean artificial intelligence, that is a different use of “AI”: an AI-generated picture is not automatically an Illustrator file.
What does AI format mean?
The filename extension .ai is the clearest clue: it identifies an Adobe Illustrator artwork document. Unlike a simple image export, an AI file is intended to preserve a design project for further editing. Depending on how it was made and saved, it may contain paths, text, layers, artboards, effects, color information, and linked or embedded images.
Adobe lists AI among Illustrator’s native formats and explains that native files can retain Illustrator data, including multiple artboards. Exporting to another format may not preserve everything needed to continue editing the original project. See Adobe’s guide to saving Illustrator artwork.

AI files are not the same as AI-generated images
A picture made with an artificial-intelligence image generator might be delivered as PNG, JPEG, SVG, PSD, or another format. It is an .ai file only if it is saved as an Adobe Illustrator document; the fact that AI software generated the image does not determine its file type.

What are AI files used for?
Designers commonly use AI files as editable source documents for logos, brand marks, icons, illustrations, packaging, labels, posters, infographics, signage, and other print or marketing artwork. They are especially useful when the design may need revisions, resizing, or output to several different formats.
- Keep an AI master when you or a collaborator will continue editing the artwork in Illustrator.
- Export a delivery file when someone needs to view, print, place, or publish the finished design rather than edit the source.
AI is therefore best understood as a working artwork document, not a universal final format for every destination.
Is an AI file vector or raster?
AI is primarily associated with vector artwork. Vector shapes are described by paths, anchor points, curves, fills, and strokes rather than by a fixed grid of pixels. Vector objects can generally be enlarged or reduced without the pixelation caused by enlarging a raster image.

But an AI document can be mixed: it may include photographs, textures, or other placed or embedded raster images, and some effects may be rasterized. The file extension alone does not guarantee that every object inside is resolution-independent.
How to open an AI file
Open it in Adobe Illustrator
- Launch Adobe Illustrator.
- Select File > Open.
- Choose the
.aifile. If Illustrator displays a compatibility warning, review it before proceeding.
Illustrator is the safest choice for continuing work because it is the application the format is built for. Adobe’s Illustrator product page describes the application and its design capabilities.
Open it without Illustrator
Some vector editors can import AI files, and some applications that read PDF may display a PDF-compatible representation stored in an AI file. The result depends on the document and the application; opening successfully does not guarantee complete editing support. Fonts, brushes, gradients, transparency, clipping masks, effects, linked images, and live text may be missing or altered.

For a quick preview, a web viewer or converter may work. For example, Aspose’s AI viewer offers browser-based access, but a viewer is not a full Illustrator editor and does not establish that every feature will be preserved.

Can you edit an AI file without Illustrator?
Sometimes. A compatible vector application may let you view or edit basic paths and colors, but fidelity varies by file and software. Complex Illustrator-specific features are less dependable, and resaving in another format may affect what can later be edited in Illustrator.
| Task | Likely outcome without Illustrator |
|---|---|
| View a simple logo | Often possible in a compatible viewer or editor |
| Edit basic paths and colors | Sometimes possible; check the result |
| Preserve all layers and live effects | Not guaranteed |
| Preserve fonts and text behavior | Not guaranteed if fonts are unavailable or unsupported |
| Maintain complex Illustrator-specific effects | Often unreliable |
| Continue a professional production file | Illustrator is generally the safest choice |
How to save an AI file in Illustrator
- Choose File > Save As or File > Save a Copy.
- Enter a filename, choose a location, and select Illustrator (*.AI) as the format.
- Select Save, then review the Illustrator Options dialog.
- Choose the compatibility and asset options appropriate to the people or applications that will receive the file, then select OK.
Adobe’s saving-artwork documentation, last updated February 12, 2025, describes options for version compatibility, font handling, PDF compatibility, linked files, color profiles, compression, and saving artboards separately.

Options that affect handoff
- Create PDF Compatible File: Stores a PDF representation in the AI file for compatibility with software that can use that representation. It does not make the complete Illustrator document universally editable elsewhere.
- Include Linked Files: Embeds linked images in the AI document, which can simplify handoff but increase file size. If they are not embedded, the recipient may need the linked assets separately.
- Font handling: Missing fonts can cause substituted type or changed text behavior. Font embedding and sharing are also subject to font licensing; do not assume a recipient can use a font simply because the design contains it.
- Older-version compatibility: Saving for an older Illustrator release may help a collaborator using that release, but Adobe warns that newer features may change or be lost.
AI vs. SVG, EPS, PDF, PNG, and JPEG
Choose based on what the recipient needs to do with the artwork. A working source file, a scalable web graphic, a print-ready document, and a quick image preview are different deliverables.
| Format | Best suited to | Editability and scaling | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI | Continuing an Illustrator project; preserving Illustrator-specific project data | Best chance of retaining Illustrator editing features; vector objects scale cleanly | Proprietary format; other applications may offer only partial compatibility |
| SVG | Scalable logos and graphics for websites, apps, and interfaces | Vector graphic suited to web use; editable in compatible vector tools | May not preserve all Illustrator features. Adobe notes that some objects, such as meshes, may be rasterized and that certain save workflows preserve only the active artboard |
| EPS | Legacy print or production workflows that specifically request it | Interchange format for vector artwork | Older PostScript-based format; may not retain modern Illustrator functionality and can involve transparency compromises |
| Sharing, review, printing, or placing artwork in another document | Broadly viewable; may preserve vector content, but is not automatically the original editable AI source | Ask the printer or recipient for required settings; a PDF-compatible AI preview is not the same as full AI editability | |
| PNG | Web graphics, transparency, presentations, and previews | Raster image; not normally editable as vector artwork | Exporting rasterizes the design at the chosen output size |
| JPEG | Photographs and compressed previews | Raster image; not normally editable as vector artwork | Compression can reduce image quality; usually a poor choice for an editable logo master |
Adobe’s format guidance discusses the differences and format-specific limitations for Illustrator exports. For a website logo, SVG is often more practical than AI; for broad review or print, PDF is often more appropriate. Follow the recipient’s specification rather than assuming one format suits every printer or workflow.
How to convert an AI file
Start with the destination, not a generic “convert” button. Before exporting, keep an untouched AI master and confirm the required format, color space, artboard dimensions, and any printer or platform specifications.
Best Value
- Website or interface logo: Export SVG when scalable vector delivery is wanted; use PNG if the destination requires a raster image or transparency.
- Print sharing or approval: Export PDF using the printer’s requested settings.
- Preview or presentation: Export PNG or JPEG at the needed dimensions; choose PNG when transparency matters.
- Legacy production system: Use EPS only when the recipient specifically requests it.
- Continued editing: Keep and send the AI source when the recipient genuinely needs the editable Illustrator project.
- Check fonts, linked images, transparency, bleed, color settings, and artboard dimensions.
- Export a proof in the requested format.
- Open or inspect the exported file in the destination application, checking text, image links, edges, and color appearance.
- Send the AI source separately only when editable artwork is required.
Conversion is not automatically lossless. It can change or discard layers, live text, effects, gradients, transparency, blend modes, clipping masks, color profiles, linked assets, or artboard structure.
Why an AI file will not open
Common causes include an application without AI support, a file saved in a newer Illustrator version, a damaged or incomplete download, missing linked images or fonts, an unavailable plug-in or effect, or a document without a usable PDF-compatible preview. A renamed .ai extension also does not prove the file is a valid Illustrator document.
Quick Recap
Try these recovery steps in order
- Check that the filename ends in
.ai, without assuming the extension alone proves the file type. - Copy or download the file again in case the original transfer was incomplete.
- Ask the sender for a PDF or SVG if you only need to view the artwork.
- If you need to edit it, ask the sender to save a compatible version and provide any linked assets; fonts should be supplied only where licensing permits.
- Try opening the file in Illustrator on another system or with plug-ins disabled if an effect or plug-in may be causing the problem.
- Use an online viewer only with a non-sensitive copy.
- If repair software is considered, treat it as a last resort and do not overwrite the original file.
