An old wool sweater can become a flower clip, pouch, gloves, garland, pincushion, or beaded coasters. The best choice depends on the size and condition of your fabric, whether you want to sew or needle-felt, and whether the finished piece will be worn, displayed, or given as a small gift.
Prepare an old wool sweater before cutting
Check the garment label first. Deseret Industries recommends 100% wool for more even felting; blends can felt less evenly, and different wool types change texture after washing. Test a spare garment or hidden swatch before using a sweater you value.
Deseret Industries describes felting as requiring “heat, moisture, and friction” (“Felted Wool Crafts,” February 16, 2018). Wash the wool in hot, soapy water with old jeans or towels to add friction, then dry it. Check whether the weave has tightened; repeat the process if it has not. Results vary by fiber, knit, and washing conditions.

Once felted, iron the fabric before cutting. Remove and save useful buttons, seams, and ribbing: they can become closures, edging, or decoration. Felting is not required for every idea, but a denser felted fabric is easier to cut into shapes without the knit unraveling.

1. Roll a wool flower clip
Cut a spiral (swirl) from a square of felted wool, then roll it inward until it forms a rose. Secure the center with a button and attach a clip. Before gluing, confirm that your hot glue is suitable for both the clip and button materials; some plastics and finishes do not bond reliably or can be damaged by heat.

2. Sew a small flap pouch
- Cut a rectangle from felted wool.
- Round one short end to create the flap.
- Stitch the side edges and rounded edge, leaving the flap free to fold over.
- Add a button or snap as the closure.
This compact shape suits items such as earbuds or money. A saved sweater button can provide a coordinated closure.
3. Make color-block wool gloves
Combine panels from contrasting felted sweaters for a color-block effect. Because the reviewed Deseret Industries guide does not include a complete glove pattern or sizing instructions, use a tested glove pattern when you need dependable dimensions and thumb shaping.

If the wool feels itchy, line the inside with fleece. Check that the lining allows the hand to move freely before closing the cuffs.
4. String a wool garland
Cut repeated decorative shapes—stars are one example—from felted sweater fabric and string them together. Saved buttons can be sewn or glued on as accents. Varying colors, shapes, and spacing lets a small amount of wool cover a mantel, shelf, or party backdrop without requiring large intact panels.

5. Turn scraps into a pincushion
Sew a small container or a simple wool shape, then fill it with leftover wool scraps. Deseret Industries specifically suggests arranging wool in a jar, which keeps the scraps contained while providing a place to insert pins. Use a stable jar and keep its rim smooth so it does not snag the fabric or your hand.
6. Stitch beaded coasters
Materials
- Felted sweater wool
- Two circles approximately 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) across for each coaster
- Embroidery thread and an embroidery needle
- Scissors
- Optional beads
Construction
- Cut two matching wool circles.
- Align them and blanket-stitch around the edge with embroidery thread.
- Add beads as you stitch or afterward, keeping them outside the area that will contact a glass if they could scratch a surface.
- For very thick felt, use a single layer. Machine quilting is optional rather than required.
The circle size and blanket-stitch method follow Jan Howell’s “How To Make Beaded Coasters From Upcycled Sweaters” (February 6, 2021). Adjust the diameter only when you have checked it against the cups or glasses you plan to use.

Optional: add needle-felted decoration
Needle felting is a separate embellishment method, not a requirement for the cut-and-sew projects. Long Thread Media Workshops’ beginner-oriented sweater lesson specifies an old sweater of at least 95% wool, 100% wool roving (or non-superwash wool yarn or wool felt sheets), a foam block, barbed needles, finger protectors, cookie cutters or stencils/cardstock, and scissors. Place the work on the foam block and protect your fingers whenever you punch barbed needles through the wool. The listed course is self-paced and uses an archived video more than a decade old, so treat its material list as guidance rather than a guarantee of current availability.
