Kermit is a friendly, informal typeface designed by Underware and commissioned by Microsoft. It was made with children learning to read in mind, but its unusual features—especially letters that can appear in a handwriting-like sequence and styles that can express speech—also make it relevant to digital reading and subtitles. Those are design goals and capabilities, not proof that the font improves reading outcomes.
What is the Kermit font?
Kermit is a type family designed by the Dutch type design studio Underware. Microsoft commissioned it as part of work on reading tools, with a brief that included creating a cheerful, friendly font that might be helpful for children learning to read. Underware announced the typeface on April 25, 2025.
Its appearance is deliberately less formal than a typical office text face, while retaining recognizable letterforms and a conventional structure. Underware describes design choices including thick strokes, a relatively large x-height, and generous spacing. These choices explain the intended look and feel; they do not establish that Kermit is easier to read than another font.
What makes Kermit unusual?
It can show letters as if they are being written
Underware calls Kermit “writable.” The font includes writing dynamics—such as stroke order, speed, and timing—so compatible software can render text progressively, in a sequence modeled on handwriting. This is different from a handwriting font that merely imitates the finished appearance of pen strokes, and it is not a tool for teaching handwriting.

The feature could support digital reading experiences or classroom experiments in which letters appear over time. Whether that presentation helps a particular reader is a separate question from whether the font can produce it.
It can carry expressive cues
Underware also describes using typographic features to represent aspects of speech prosody: pitch, duration, and intensity. Changes in width and vertical position can provide visible cues, while unusually condensed and expanded styles may be used in automated applications such as expressive subtitles. This is a feature described by the type designer, not a standard presentation guaranteed to appear whenever Kermit is selected in Microsoft 365.

Is Kermit a font for dyslexia or a proven reading aid?
The available product descriptions do not demonstrate that Kermit improves comprehension, reading speed, or outcomes for people with dyslexia. Underware frames Kermit as a possible component of new reading tools, not a universal remedy; the studio says it is “not a one-size-fits-all solution for all reading problems in the world.”
It is also important to distinguish learning to read from learning to write by hand. Underware explicitly notes that those subjects are related but different. Kermit’s writable feature concerns how text can be displayed digitally; it does not by itself establish an educational benefit or make the typeface a handwriting-instruction system.

How many languages and styles does Kermit support?
Underware’s feature and style documentation, accessed September 28, 2026, reports support for 426 languages across three scripts: Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic. The studio lists seven weights. Its static family contains 42 fonts:
- 14 regular and italic styles
- 14 condensed styles
- 14 expanded styles
The 426-language figure describes the language coverage Underware reports for the typeface; it is not a measure of readability, accessibility, or educational effectiveness. Microsoft Support’s Office cloud-font list names Kermit, Kermit Bold, Kermit Bold Italic, and Kermit Italic. That list is narrower than Underware’s description of the complete family.

How do you get Kermit?
Use it through Microsoft 365
Underware says Kermit is available as an Office cloud font for Microsoft 365 customers on Windows and Mac. Select it from the font menu in a supported Office app; Underware says the cloud font installs when selected. Microsoft Support lists the four Kermit entries named above. Availability can change, so check the current Office cloud-font list if Kermit does not appear in your app.

License the typeface from Underware
Underware announced commercial licensing through its webshop in April 2025. License terms depend on the intended use, so consult the studio’s current licensing information before using Kermit in a project outside the Microsoft 365 cloud-font offering. No current price is stated here.

How Kermit differs from a conventional font
Kermit is not simply a casual alternative to a conventional text face. Its design combines an informal visual tone with features intended for animated writing and expressive display. A comparison with any particular font would depend on the actual text, setting, and implementation; the available sources do not report a controlled readability comparison with Aptos, Calibri, or other typefaces.
Underware’s 120-page English-language book Time to play, announced May 9, 2025, includes a Kermit specimen and articles by Rob McKaughan of Microsoft, Underware, and Gerry Leonidas. Underware gave the ISBN as 978 90 76984 13 1 and said the book could be ordered through its website. Availability through other retailers is not established here.
