To make a basic container candle, secure a suitable wick in a candle-rated vessel, melt candle wax according to its manufacturer’s instructions, add optional candle fragrance or dye within that wax’s limits, pour, and let it set. Then test the finished candle: wax, wick, fragrance, and vessel need to work together, so no single temperature, wick size, fragrance percentage, or curing time applies to every candle.
What you need to make a container candle
A container candle is a practical beginner project because the vessel holds the wax as it sets. Gather:
- Wax intended for container candles
- A vessel made for candle use
- A compatible pre-tabbed wick, plus a wick sticker or another suitable way to secure it
- A wick-centering tool or holder
- A melting and pouring pitcher
- A thermometer and digital scale
- Optional candle fragrance and candle dye
These are common supplies in the Lone Star Candle Supply container-candle tutorial and CandleScience paraffin tutorial. A candle-making kit can be convenient, but check that its wax and wick suit your specific vessel; a kit’s included wick is not automatically right for every formula.

Pick wax intended for your candle
Choose a product made for container candles and follow that wax’s instructions. There is no universally best wax established by the available guidance: the National Candle Association discusses paraffin, soy, coconut, palm, beeswax, gel, and synthetic waxes as options selected for formulation suitability. That is an industry overview, not a comparative test proving one wax is cleaner, safer, or better than another. Read the National Candle Association’s wax overview.

Use a candle-rated vessel
Use a container intended for candle use rather than an arbitrary drinking glass or decorative vessel. The National Candle Association says candle holders are manufactured to withstand temperature changes and cautions against using everyday glassware as a candle holder. See its candle-care guidance.
Start wick selection with the supplier’s chart
Look up the wick series and size recommended for your exact wax and the vessel’s internal diameter. Treat the chart as a starting point, not a guarantee. Fragrance, dye, vessel, and formula can change how a wick performs; CandleScience explicitly recommends testing its chart recommendations. Consult the CandleScience container-wick guide.

How to make a container candle
- Prepare the vessel. Secure the wick tab to the bottom of the candle-rated vessel, then use a centering holder to keep the wick upright and centered.
- Weigh the wax. Measure the amount needed for your vessel with a scale. Follow the wax manufacturer’s directions for estimating and preparing a batch.
- Melt and monitor. Heat the wax using the method and temperature instructions for that exact product. A double boiler or wax melter is demonstrated in CandleScience’s paraffin tutorial, but its process settings should not be transferred to a different wax without checking that wax’s directions. Keep hot wax attended and handle hot equipment carefully. See the supplier’s paraffin method.
- Add optional fragrance or dye as directed. Weigh any fragrance, stay within the wax’s stated maximum, and use only fragrance and dye intended for candle making. Follow the wax supplier’s specified mixing and pouring directions; suppliers may give different instructions for different waxes and methods. Adding more fragrance does not guarantee a stronger or better candle.
- Pour and let the candle set. Pour as directed for your wax and keep the wick centered as the wax cools. Follow the product maker’s guidance for any cure time; there is no universal curing duration.
- Trim and test. Before burning, trim the wick to 1/4 inch, following the National Candle Association’s consumer guidance. Test the actual combination of wax, wick, fragrance, dye, and vessel in controlled, repeatable burns. Record flame behavior, the melt pool, soot, and the vessel’s condition.
How to check whether the candle is working well
A wick chart helps narrow the choice, but the finished formula is what needs evaluation. During repeatable test burns, note whether the flame behaves steadily, whether the wax melts as expected, whether soot appears, and whether the vessel remains in good condition. If you change the wax, wick, fragrance, dye, or vessel, treat it as a changed combination and test it rather than assuming the previous result still applies. Troubleshoot common container-candle problems
The candle tunnels or leaves unmelted wax at the sides
Recheck whether the wick recommendation matches the wax and the vessel’s actual internal diameter, then test the combination under consistent conditions. Wick choice may be contributing, but tunneling alone does not prove a single cause. Use the supplier’s wick guide as a reference.

The flame flickers, smokes, or produces soot
Check for a long wick, drafts, or debris in the wax pool. The National Candle Association advises trimming the wick to 1/4 inch before use, clearing debris, and keeping candles away from moving air. Review its care tips.
The candle’s scent seems weak
Do not exceed the wax’s stated fragrance limit to compensate. Check that the fragrance is intended for candles and follow the specific wax’s addition and cure directions. The top cools with a crater or uneven surface
A small second pour is one supplier’s cosmetic remedy for a cooling crater. Whether it suits your candle depends on the wax and the supplier’s process; it is not a safety fix or a universal requirement. See the supplier’s container-candle instructions.

Handle hot wax and burn candles safely
Follow the wax and equipment makers’ handling instructions while melting wax, keep the process attended, and take care with hot tools and liquid wax. When burning a finished candle, the National Candle Association advises these precautions:
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep it away from things that can catch fire, children, and pets.
- Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before burning and keep debris out of the wax pool.
- Avoid drafts, and do not touch or move a burning candle.
- Do not use water to extinguish it.

If you plan to sell candles
Check the current rules and standards that apply in your market rather than relying on a hobby recipe as a compliance checklist. The National Candle Association says ASTM F2058 addresses candle fire-safety labeling and advises looking for cautionary labels. Its Candle Labels 101 overview is an industry explanation, not the full current standard or legal advice; requirements depend on jurisdiction and product.
