Seoul’s tattoo scene spans fine-line botanicals, vivid watercolour, traditional Korean imagery, and dark illustration. Start with the artists whose portfolios fit your idea—not the ones with the most followers—and confirm their current location, availability, price, language support, and booking process directly. Eight artists below have documented style profiles; two studios describe their services and booking arrangements on their own sites; the final four are leads to investigate, not verified recommendations.

Eight Seoul-connected artists with documented style profiles

These eight have the clearest artist-and-style profiles in the available guide. Their specialties are useful starting points, not guarantees that they will take a particular commission or be in Seoul on your dates.

Doy (Kim Do-yoon)

Doy works with watercolour, abstract forms, surrealism, and colour. The guide describes delicate pigment washes and a collaborative approach to developing designs with clients. Consider this portfolio if you want a painterly, less strictly outlined image.

Four additional names to research before choosing

Saegeem, 1sle, Yeguclub, and Purinn surfaced as traveler-mentioned artist leads. Current location, style, and booking channels were not established for these names, so treat them as search starting points rather than confirmed Seoul recommendations. Find an artist’s current, attributable portfolio and contact channel before sending a deposit or making travel plans around an appointment.

How to choose the right artist for your design

A useful shortlist is based on how the artist handles your subject, size, placement, and skin—not on popularity alone. Tattooing is permanent, and a motif that looks good in a small portfolio image may need changes to remain legible on your chosen area.

  • Match the visual language: Decide whether you want fine line, watercolour, traditional Korean imagery, mythology, or dark illustration, then look for repeated examples of that approach in the artist’s own portfolio.
  • Check subject and symbolism: If you want a historical, Buddhist, norigae, or other culturally specific motif, discuss its meaning and the artist’s interpretation instead of relying on a generic reference image.
  • Compare scale and placement: Send the intended body placement and approximate dimensions. Ask how the artist would adapt line weight, contrast, and colour for that location and size.
  • Look for healed work: Fresh tattoos show the original colour and crispness; healed examples help you assess how the artist’s lines and details settle. Do not infer long-term results from follower counts or a single fresh photo.
  • Confirm communication: Daldam and Onsil Ink explicitly describe English-language support. For other artists, ask directly which language they can use for design decisions, consent, aftercare, and follow-up.
  • Check practical terms: Ask about the quoted price, deposit, cancellation policy, session length, and payment method. Artist-by-artist deposit and cancellation terms are not established here.

How far ahead to book, and what prices to expect

The guide says its most in-demand artists—Doy, Oozy, Studio by Sol, and Pitta KKM—may need three to six months’ advance booking. That is a planning signal, not a confirmed wait time for every artist or date. Onsil Ink recommends that international clients book four to six weeks ahead and says its books open monthly; Daldam describes a reservation-only process. Ask about the specific dates you need as early as possible.

A practical enquiry workflow for a Seoul visit

  1. Find the artist’s current official portfolio and booking channel. Follow the artist’s account if that is where they announce booking openings, and inspect both fresh and healed examples.
  2. Send one concise enquiry. Include your design idea, reference images, intended body placement, approximate size, available dates, and nearby existing tattoos. State that you will be visiting Seoul and give your travel window.
  3. Ask the questions that affect the appointment. Confirm whether the artist is available in Seoul on those dates, whether they accept the subject and placement, the expected price and deposit, cancellation terms, session length, language support, and how payment works.
  4. Wait for the artist’s design and booking instructions before committing travel around the appointment. A portfolio match alone does not confirm a booking, and appointment arrangements can vary by artist or studio.
  5. Get aftercare guidance before the session. Ask how to care for the tattoo during the remainder of your trip, especially if your plans include swimming, extended sun exposure, or activities that could rub the area.

What visitors should know about tattoo law in South Korea

South Korea’s National Assembly approved the Tattooist Act on September 25, 2025, in a 195–0 vote, according to the Associated Press. The act establishes an official licensing system and is set to take effect after a two-year grace period beginning with formal promulgation. Because that period runs from promulgation and implementation requirements may change, do not assume from the passage date alone that a particular licensing rule is already in force. Check current Korean government guidance and ask the studio about its compliance before booking.

The previous legal framework treated tattooing as a medical procedure. The Associated Press reported that a 2023 Health Ministry survey found only 1.4% of respondents with ordinary tattoos and 6.8% of respondents with cosmetic tattoos said they had been tattooed in hospitals. Those figures describe survey responses, not the legal status or safety record of any individual studio.
