Two Andy Warhol prints depicting Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Margrethe II were stolen from MPV Gallery in Oisterwijk, the Netherlands, after an explosive device was used to force entry on November 1, 2024. Two other prints, depicting Queen Beatrix and Queen Ntombi Tfwala, were left outside damaged. An arrest was reported four days later, but the works had not been found as of that report.
What happened at MPV Gallery?
The robbery took place in the early hours of Friday, November 1, 2024, at MPV Gallery in Oisterwijk. The Associated Press reported that the thieves used an explosive to blow open the gallery door. Gallery owner Mark Peet Visser described the damage as severe, saying, “The bomb attack was so violent that my entire building was destroyed.” That is Visser’s account of the damage, not an independent structural assessment. (Associated Press)
The thieves tried to take all four framed works on display, but, according to Visser, they would not fit in the getaway car. The two prints taken were removed from their frames; the other two were abandoned outside in damaged condition. Visser called the robbery “amateurish,” his characterization rather than an official police assessment. (Associated Press)

What is Warhol’s Reigning Queens series?
Reigning Queens is a screenprint portfolio begun in 1985. It depicts four queens who were reigning at the time: Elizabeth II, Beatrix, Margrethe II and Ntfombi Tfwala. Each appears in four colour variants, making 16 images in total. Phillips’ catalogue describes Standard and Royal editions of the portfolio. (Phillips, 2023)
Was anyone arrested, and were the prints recovered?
In a November 5, 2024 report, the Associated Press said Dutch police had arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of involvement in the robbery. The police statement described in that report did not establish whether the prints were recovered during raids; Visser said they were still missing at that point. That report is an early status snapshot, not confirmation of the case’s present recovery or legal status. (Associated Press, November 5, 2024)

Is this the same case as the stolen Campbell’s Soup prints?
No. The FBI’s notice concerns a separate theft of seven Andy Warhol Campbell’s Soup I prints from the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri on April 7, 2016. The museum had owned the set since 1985. The FBI estimated that set’s value at approximately $500,000; neither that figure nor that theft pertains to the four Reigning Queens prints taken or damaged in the Netherlands. (FBI)
