There is no verified official free Studio Ghibli pumpkin template identified here. A search result for a user-created “Howl and Sophie Pumpkin Stencil” appeared, but its destination could not be opened, so its current availability, download terms and permission to share remain unconfirmed. Your dependable alternatives are to use a creator-provided fan stencil only when its terms are clear, or make an original, printable design with a free stencil tool.

Why “free” does not mean officially licensed
Studio Ghibli’s copyright list, revised in February 2024, identifies rights notices for its films and says Ghibli holds and manages copyright for those works as one rights holder, with an exception for Grave of the Fireflies. The list identifies My Neighbor Totoro as © 1988 Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli. A file posted by a fan is therefore not automatically an authorized Studio Ghibli asset.
Studio Ghibli’s Public Relations/Copyright Management permissions page states: “Except as expressly stated below, we do not authorize any use of the copyrighted works owned by us without our permission.” Its described exception for still images supplied on the Studio Ghibli website is limited to reasonable, customary and strictly non-commercial use. That wording does not establish blanket permission to copy characters into stencils or distribute those stencils.

In a December 9, 2024 notice, Studio Ghibli warned about unauthorized reproductions made from its films and publications and asked fans to support officially licensed and authorized businesses. The notice addresses the reproductions and sales it describes; it is not a definitive ruling on every person carving a pumpkin at home. If you plan to sell stencils, carved pumpkins or finished products, obtain permission or use artwork you have the right to commercialize.
How to evaluate a fan-made template
- Open the creator’s actual page. Do not rely on a search-result title or thumbnail. Confirm that the file can currently be downloaded.
- Read the usage terms. Look for explicit wording about personal carving, printing, reposting, modification and commercial use. If no terms are provided, treat permission to redistribute as unknown.
- Check attribution requirements. Preserve the creator’s name and any required credit when you print or post a photograph.
- Inspect the pattern before printing. Thin bridges and isolated interior pieces can fall out of a pumpkin. Choose a design whose largest shapes match your carving skill.
- Do not call it official. Unless Studio Ghibli or an authorized publisher identifies the file, describe it as fan-made.
Make a printable original with a free stencil tool
PumpkinStenciler is a general-purpose free design-and-print tool rather than a Studio Ghibli template library. Its documented features include a preview, a check for pieces that would fall out and sizing a stencil to the pumpkin. You can use those controls to build an original moon, forest, soot-sprite-inspired texture or other non-character Halloween design. If you deliberately reproduce a protected character, the tool’s technical features do not supply permission to use that character.
- Choose or draw an original high-contrast image.
- Preview the result and run the tool’s check for unsupported pieces.
- Enter the printable size that fits the pumpkin’s usable face.
- Print on regular paper and cut around the outside of the pattern.
- Keep a copy of your source file so you can resize or simplify it if the first print is too detailed.
Transfer a stencil to the pumpkin
Official Disney and Play Nintendo activity instructions describe the same basic transfer methods. Prepare a clean, dry pumpkin, regular paper, tape and a pushpin, toothpick or similar marking tool. A pumpkin-carving kit supplies the cutting tools; sharp tools should be handled by an adult.
- Prepare the surface. Clean and dry the pumpkin so paper and tape stay in place.
- Choose a transfer method. Copy the outline with a water-based marker, or tape the paper to the pumpkin and poke along the design with a pushpin, nail or plastic poking tool.
- Start in the center. Work from small interior details outward, then cut the larger outline sections.
- Remove the paper and connect the marks. Use the dotted transfer points or marker lines as your cutting guide.
- Cut safely. Use appropriate pumpkin tools, keep hands clear of the blade and have an adult perform cutting when children are participating.
Choosing a design that will survive carving
- Prefer bold shapes. Large eyes, silhouettes and broad color blocks transfer more reliably than fine line art.
- Keep bridges intact. Any island of pumpkin surrounded by cut lines needs a supporting connection or it may drop out.
- Match detail to pumpkin size. A pattern designed for a large, smooth pumpkin may collapse when reduced to a small one.
- Test on paper first. Hold the print against the pumpkin and check that the important features sit on a reasonably flat area.
Where to look for authorized Ghibli material
Studio Ghibli’s international publications catalog describes books and printed materials that are officially licensed worldwide. It is useful for identifying authorized Ghibli publishing, but it does not show that the catalog contains pumpkin templates. For character artwork, prefer an item clearly identified by Studio Ghibli or an authorized business, and treat third-party downloads as unofficial unless their licensing is documented.
