There is no single best off-white for every room. The right choice depends on the paint’s undertone, the direction and amount of daylight, your bulbs, and the colors of nearby finishes. This shortlist of 13 popular options gives you warm, clean, creamy, and greige-leaning whites to compare—then a practical way to test them before committing.
13 off-white paint colors to compare
These are starting points, not a universal ranking. Benjamin Moore describes White Dove as its most popular white, but that does not make it the best fit for every room. No authoritative source provides a comparable ranking or a verified light reflectance value (LRV) comparison across all 13 colors, so choose by appearance in your own space rather than by an unsupported cross-brand score.

Benjamin Moore
- White Dove OC-17: A classic warm-neutral starting point. Benjamin Moore calls it “a clean and classic white hue” and says it is the brand’s most popular white. See White Dove OC-17.
- Simply White OC-117: A lightly warm option for walls, trim, ceilings, or cabinetry. Benjamin Moore describes it as a favorite with a slight hint of warmth. See Simply White OC-117.
- Chantilly Lace OC-65: The brightest, cleanest-feeling option in this group; Benjamin Moore calls it one of its “whitest white” colors. See Chantilly Lace OC-65.
- Swiss Coffee OC-45: A creamy warm white for rooms where a softer look is welcome. Check the current chip and how it reads in the room before choosing it.
- Cloud White OC-130: A warm-neutral candidate for walls or trim. Compare a sample directly with White Dove; their difference may be subtle in some rooms.
- Pale Oak OC-20: A muted, greige-leaning off-white for a less creamy look. Test it next to the flooring and stone it will share the room with.
- Ballet White OC-55: A gentle beige-white that can suit a soft, layered palette. Sample it in place because surrounding colors can make it look warmer.
Sherwin-Williams
- Alabaster SW 7008: A popular warm off-white; Sherwin-Williams describes it as a blend with subtle beige undertones. See Alabaster SW 7008.
- Pure White SW 7005: A clean, adaptable white that can provide more contrast than creamier choices. See Pure White SW 7005.
- Shoji White SW 7042: A warm off-white with a slightly beige character, according to Sherwin-Williams’ editorial description. See Shoji White SW 7042.
- Greek Villa SW 7551: A softly creamy warm-white candidate for a consistent whole-home palette. Compare it with Alabaster under your room’s actual lighting. See Greek Villa SW 7551.
- Creamy SW 7012: A noticeably warmer choice for bedrooms and living spaces where you want a soft glow. See Creamy SW 7012.
- Dover White SW 6385: A richer creamy white that can stand apart from bright trim. Check it carefully under warm artificial light, which may emphasize its warmth. See Dover White SW 6385.
How to choose an off-white for your room
Start with the undertone you want
Warm whites can have red, orange, or yellow undertones; cooler whites can lean green, blue, or violet, according to Benjamin Moore’s white-paint guidance. Sherwin-Williams likewise recommends choosing an undertone that counteracts the room’s lighting rather than amplifying it: “Unless you’re looking to showcase the undertones in your white paint, choose a white paint whose undertones will counteract the room’s lighting.” Read Sherwin-Williams’ guidance on white paint colors.
As a rough first pass, compare creamier options such as Swiss Coffee, Creamy, or Dover White with cleaner choices such as Chantilly Lace or Pure White. Pale Oak offers a less creamy, greige-leaning direction. The names alone cannot tell you precisely how a color will appear on your walls, so use samples to confirm.
#1 Best Overall
- COLORS CRAFTED BY ANNIE SLOAN: A timeless off-white, that works with everything. Old White is a sophisticated and understated neutral that will give your walls a soft, chalky, traditional look and feel.
- COVERAGE: One-step high performance Annie Sloan Wall Paint provides great coverage. Each gallon covers up to 387 sq. ft. Coverage will vary depending on surface and application.
- HOW TO USE: Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Stir paint well before use. Apply by brush or roller. Ready for a second coat 1.5 hours after application, depending on conditions. Recommended application of two coats for best finish.
- AFTERCARE: Thoroughly wash brushes or rollers in warm soapy water.
- WASHABLE FINISH: Each deeply nuanced shade offers durable and wipeable coverage. It is easy to clean walls without damaging the paint surface.
Account for daylight and bulbs
North-facing daylight can make a cool white feel gray; warm southern light or warm LEDs can intensify the yellow in a warm white. Sherwin-Williams advises that cool-hued rooms can pair well with cool-undertone whites, while sunlit rooms may suit whites that offset warm natural light. Its white-color guide explains the relationship between light and undertones.
Benjamin Moore notes that “Natural light can bring out undertones, while artificial light can make whites look warmer or cooler.” The same paint may therefore look different during the day and after dark, or under different bulb temperatures. Benjamin Moore’s guidance covers natural and artificial light.

Compare with trim and fixed finishes
Look at the candidate beside the actual trim white, not just against a color card. A brighter trim can make a warmer wall color appear creamier by contrast. Also place the sample next to flooring, countertops, backsplash, upholstery, and wood: those surfaces reflect color into the paint and can shift how the white reads.

Test samples before buying full-size paint
- Choose a short list. Pick a few candidates based on whether you want a clean, warm, creamy, or greige-leaning white.
- Make large samples. Paint large boards or wall sections rather than relying on a small chip. Put them near the trim and finishes that will remain in the room.
- Move or observe them in place. Check samples on more than one wall if the room has noticeably different exposures.
- View them at different times. Look in the morning, afternoon, and evening, with the room’s usual lights on after dark. Natural and artificial light alter perceived whites.
- Decide in context. Choose the sample that works alongside the fixed finishes and trim throughout the day, rather than the one that looks best in isolation.
