Yes. Ubisoft disclosed that AI tools helped create some in-game assets in Anno 117: Pax Romana. The company says artists used those tools for iteration, prototyping and exploration, while the finished game reflects the team’s craft and creative vision. That disclosure does not identify every affected asset, establish a total count, or prove that every disputed image was AI-generated.
What Ubisoft actually disclosed
As reported by PC Gamer on November 18, 2025, the Steam disclosure states: “AI tools were used to help create some in game assets. In all such cases, the final product reflects our team’s craft and creative vision.” This is Ubisoft’s own description, not an independent inventory of the game’s art.

The wording matters. “Some in game assets” is deliberately broad: it does not say how many assets were assisted, which departments used the tools, or whether a particular image began as an AI output, a conventional sketch, a texture, or a composite. It also does not mean that all of Anno 117’s artwork was generated by AI.
How Ubisoft says artists used the tools
In the same reporting, Ubisoft described AI as support for production rather than a replacement for the art team. The company said the artists used AI tools for “iterations, prototyping, and exploration,” and said the project had the franchise’s largest team of artists to meet its scope.

Those terms describe early and exploratory stages of a visual workflow:
- Iteration: rapidly testing variations before an artist settles on a direction.
- Prototyping: making a temporary visual to test layout, mood or communication in the game.
- Exploration: generating possibilities that may inform later, human-led design work.
Ubisoft’s explanation is attributed to the company; the cited reports do not independently document the studio’s internal process, review gates or the proportion of final pixels produced with assistance.

The disputed image and the promised patch
Players drew attention to an image whose visible defects prompted criticism of both its appearance and the decision to include AI-assisted material. Ubisoft reportedly called that image “a placeholder asset that unintentionally slipped through our review process,” as reported by PC Gamer on November 16, 2025.
The company said it would replace the image in an upcoming patch identified in the report as version 1.3. The available reporting does not verify that the replacement shipped, what the replacement looks like, or whether other assets were changed. “Placeholder” is therefore Ubisoft’s explanation for that incident, not proof that every criticized image had the same origin.

Why painters and visual-art readers are scrutinizing it
Craft is not the same as tool provenance
For a painting-focused audience, the central distinction is between how an image was initiated and how it was resolved. A concept generated during exploration can still be substantially redrawn, composited, color-scripted and integrated by artists. Conversely, a temporary image that reaches a public build can be judged as finished work regardless of its intended status.
Ubisoft’s statement asserts that the final product reflects its team’s craft and vision. The reported placeholder incident shows why audiences may still evaluate the visible result first: unclear hands, inconsistent lettering, implausible details or stylistic discontinuities are quality-control concerns whether or not AI was involved.

Disclosure changes the question, but not the visual test
The disclosure gives players useful provenance information, yet it does not settle aesthetic or ethical debates about training data, authorship, labor, or acceptable use. Those are separate questions from whether a particular asset communicates clearly and meets the game’s visual standard.

How to interpret the controversy without overclaiming
- Do not describe every image in Anno 117 as AI-generated; Ubisoft disclosed assistance for only “some” assets.
- Do not treat the planned patch as confirmed remediation unless a current Ubisoft or game-build record verifies what shipped.
- Separate visible quality criticism from claims about an image’s provenance.
- Treat the art-book discussion as an unverified community lead, not evidence of a confirmed product.
The most defensible conclusion is narrow: Ubisoft acknowledged AI-tool assistance in part of Anno 117’s asset creation and defended the final work as artist-led. Public reporting documents a disputed placeholder and a promised replacement, but it does not provide a complete asset inventory or establish the final remediation status.
