Choose a firm pumpkin with a flat base, draw a simple design, and have an adult cut it with a pumpkin-carving tool while keeping the blade pointed away from hands and body. Use an LED light for display, and keep the carved pumpkin cool to slow its decay.
Choose a pumpkin that will stand securely
Look for a firm pumpkin with a hard, intact shell and a flat bottom. Avoid one with holes, cuts, mold, or soft spots. A stem about 1–2 inches long is useful to hold while handling, but carry the pumpkin from underneath or around its sides—not by the stem, which can break.
Before carving, wash the pumpkin and dry it. Set it on a clean, dry, well-lit, stable work surface. Dry hands and tools matter: wet seed pulp can make a grip slippery.

Draw a face or pattern directly on the pumpkin with a marker, or secure a stencil with tape and trace its outline. A basic face made from a few large shapes is easier to cut than a detailed pattern with many small openings. Some pumpkin-carving kits include patterns at different difficulty levels, according to Oklahoma State University Extension.

Children can help choose and draw the design, decorate the pumpkin, and scoop out seeds and pulp. Keep the cutting job for an adult; the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises, “Leave pumpkin carving to the adults.” Children should not hold the pumpkin while an adult cuts it.
Choose tools and cutting methods

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) spokesperson Craig Phillips, MD, FAAOS, said, “Using proper pumpkin carving instruments and cutting away from the body is just one way to avoid musculoskeletal injuries.”

Carve the opening and design
- Decide where the opening will go. Choose a location that leaves enough room to reach inside and remove the seeds and pulp. Mark the cut line before using a tool.
- Stabilize the pumpkin. Set it on the work surface so it does not roll. Do not ask a child to hold it while an adult cuts.
- Cut slowly with an adult-controlled pumpkin tool. Keep the cutting hand steady and direct each stroke away from your hands and body. Rotate the pumpkin as needed rather than reaching across the blade.
- Remove the lid or cut-out piece carefully. Put the tool down before lifting it, and keep fingers clear of the cut edge.
- Scoop out pulp and seeds. Use a spoon or the scoop from a carving kit. If you plan to eat the seeds, separate them from the pulp and refrigerate them promptly; Illinois Extension provides separate guidance for preserving pumpkin seeds.
Choose a light with fire risk in mind
A battery-operated light, glow stick, or LED tea light avoids the open flame of a candle. CPSC advises keeping a flame away from curtains and other combustible materials and never leaving it unattended if you use one. Do not leave any lit pumpkin unattended.

Help the pumpkin last through Halloween
A carved pumpkin commonly lasts about seven to ten days, depending on the weather, according to university extension guidance. Keep it cool, and protect the cut edges from drying. Warm outdoor conditions can shorten display life; the cited guidance does not establish one preservation method that works best in every climate.

After display, compost the pumpkin where local services or home composting allow it. Remove any battery-operated light or other non-compostable parts first.
