Adobe began retiring Photoshop’s legacy 3D tools with version 22.5 in August 2021—not by removing every feature for every user overnight. The change disrupted workflows for 3D text, object placement, lighting, materials and panoramas. Adobe cited reliability problems with an OpenGL-based system; users in Adobe’s support forum objected to losing convenient tools included in Photoshop and being pointed toward separate 3D software. The old system was later removed, and Adobe’s once-promoted Substance 3D Viewer integration is no longer a dependable replacement: Adobe says Viewer would not be supported or available for installation after October 16, 2025.

What Photoshop 22.5 changed

Photoshop 22.5 marked the start of Adobe’s removal process for its legacy 3D feature set. It is misleading to describe the release as the day all Photoshop 3D functions disappeared at once. The affected system included 3D layers and object manipulation, extruded text, camera and lighting controls, materials and texture workflows, and import or export of assets such as OBJ files. Adobe’s contemporaneous FAQ also treated Spherical Panorama functionality as part of the retiring feature set. The precise timing of every command’s disappearance was not identical or established for all installations.

These tools let users do modest 3D work inside a familiar 2D editor: extrude type, position an object, adjust its lighting, or prepare certain textures without moving to a dedicated 3D application. That convenience—not the breadth of a full modeling package—was central to their appeal.

Why Adobe said it was retiring the tools

Adobe attributed the change to reliability. Its Photoshop 22.5 release notes said the legacy 3D feature set had become unreliable on modern operating systems. In its August 17, 2021 community announcement, Adobe explained that the tools depended on OpenGL as operating systems and GPU development moved toward native graphics APIs. Adobe also presented Substance as its newer direction for 3D content creation.

That is Adobe’s stated technical rationale. It does not establish that the company’s motive was to force users into paid products. Some forum participants interpreted the change commercially because separate Substance applications could mean extra cost and a different workflow; that reaction is distinct from evidence of corporate intent.

Why some users objected

Adobe Community posts show genuine frustration, but they are self-selected comments, not a survey of Photoshop customers. The complaints reveal why a seemingly limited feature retirement mattered to some users:

  • Workflow disruption: people used Photoshop’s familiar tools for occasional extruded text, object placement, lighting adjustments, normal-map creation and OBJ handling.
  • Loss of convenience: simple jobs that had been possible in the same application now required another tool and a handoff.
  • Subscription value: some users objected to losing functionality they associated with their existing Photoshop or All Apps subscription.
  • Different cost and complexity: users saw Adobe’s suggested Substance tools as more specialized, potentially more expensive, and excessive for quick 3D tasks.

The forum documents these individual objections; it cannot show how widespread they were across the full Photoshop user base.

How the phase-out unfolded

Date What happened
August 2021 Photoshop 22.5 began the removal process, and Adobe explained its OpenGL reliability concerns in a community announcement.
2021 onward Adobe Community guidance pointed users who still needed the older tools toward Photoshop 22.2.
July 2024 Adobe documentation said the legacy 3D features had been removed from Photoshop.
October 16, 2025 Adobe said Substance 3D Viewer would no longer be supported or available for installation.

The dates are supported by Adobe’s 22.5 release notes, its community discussion, its Photoshop documentation, and its Viewer integration help page. The latter page also documents a historical Photoshop-beta workflow: drag a model into Photoshop beta as a Smart Object, edit it in Viewer, then send it back. Its discontinuation notice means that workflow should not be presented as an available remedy in 2026.

Can you still use Photoshop’s old 3D tools?

Adobe Community guidance identified Photoshop 22.2 as an older release for people who needed legacy 3D functionality, including in a reply as recent as March 2025. That does not guarantee that every Creative Cloud account can install it now, or that it will work reliably with a particular current operating system, GPU, plug-in set or document.

If the Creative Cloud desktop app still offers the release for your account, the historical route is:

  1. Open the Creative Cloud desktop app and find Photoshop in the installed-app list.
  2. Open Photoshop’s More actions menu and choose Other versions, if that option is available.
  3. Check whether Photoshop 22.2 or another suitable legacy version is offered before changing your current installation.
  4. Keep the older version separate from current Photoshop where possible, and test it with copies of documents rather than originals.

A legacy installation may bring security and compatibility drawbacks, and could behave differently on newer hardware. Back up PSDs, OBJ files, textures and linked assets; retain needed fonts, plug-ins, profiles and presets; and export a flattened render before migrating when editable 3D behavior cannot be preserved. A PSD may open in current Photoshop without its former 3D layer remaining fully editable.

Pick a replacement by the job, not by the old panel

No single current product is established here as a one-for-one recreation of Photoshop’s retired 3D system. The right choice depends on whether you need geometry, texture authoring, scene staging or only a 2D editor for compositing.

Need Best-fit option Cost model established here Main trade-off
Modeling, animation, materials, lighting and rendering Blender Free Broad 3D capability, but a different interface and a steeper learning curve than occasional Photoshop extrusion.
Painting textures and authoring materials on 3D meshes Adobe Substance 3D Painter Adobe’s U.S. product page showed the Substance 3D Collection at US$59.99/month on August 18, 2026; the page also showed a team plan at US$119.99/month per license, annual billed monthly. Purpose-built for 3D texturing, but specialized and potentially disproportionate for occasional 3D text.
Assembling a scene, positioning assets, setting cameras and lighting, and making product-style renders Adobe Substance 3D Stager The same U.S. Collection and team-plan prices were shown on Adobe’s product page on August 18, 2026. A dedicated staging application, not a replacement for Photoshop’s old 3D layer panel.
Photo editing and 2D compositing without relying on Adobe Affinity Photo Not stated on the cited product page here. Relevant to raster editing, not a substitute for editable 3D layers, modeling or 3D lighting.

The Adobe prices above are U.S. prices displayed August 18, 2026; taxes, promotions and billing terms may vary or change. They describe the Collection and team plan, not a separately verified standalone price for every application.

For simple 3D text or a logo

If you need editable geometry, camera and lighting control, or reusable scenes, a small Blender workflow may be more appropriate than buying a full texture-and-staging suite. If the output only needs to be a transparent image, a rendered asset or a pre-rendered library image composited in Photoshop may be sufficient. Choose based on whether you need to revise the 3D object later.

For normal maps and material work

A dedicated texturing application such as Substance 3D Painter better matches the task of painting materials on a mesh. Confirm the file formats and material-handling requirements of the application receiving the result; format support can differ, especially for OBJ workflows. A broad 3D subscription is most defensible when texture and material work is regular rather than occasional.

For spherical panoramas

Do not assume that replacing the old 3D object tools also resolves panoramic editing. Spherical Panorama support was included among the discontinued functionality, but the sources cited here do not establish a current replacement path for that specific workflow.

For old 3D PSDs

First decide whether the file must remain editable as 3D or whether a final rendered image is enough. Preserve the original document and associated assets, then test a duplicate in the intended software. If the old layer cannot be retained as editable geometry, an exported flattened render may preserve the appearance but not the original controls.

What to take from the backlash

The anger documented in 2021 had a practical basis: users lost a convenient in-app route for occasional 3D work, while the proposed alternatives involved new software, skills and—in some cases—a separate recurring subscription. Adobe’s technical explanation is also documented: it said the aging OpenGL-dependent feature set had become unreliable. Both points can be true without treating forum comments as a measure of universal opinion or claiming a commercial motive that the record does not prove.
