The Instagram icon is the colorful camera symbol; the Instagram wordmark is the lettering that spells “Instagram.” Use Meta’s current Brand Resources for authorized artwork and follow its usage rules. A file’s availability online—or a claim that a simple logo is public domain—does not by itself grant permission to use it as branding.
Instagram icon, wordmark, and logo: what’s the difference?
- Icon: the square camera glyph commonly used to identify the app or link to an Instagram profile.
- Wordmark: the written Instagram name in its branded lettering.
- Logo: a broad term that may mean the icon, wordmark, or a combined arrangement of both.
- Social icon: an icon used as a link or interface control. It is not necessarily a separate official logo or promotional badge.
In everyday conversation, people often call either the camera symbol or the lettering the “Instagram logo.” For a download or design brief, specify which one you need.
What does the current Instagram icon look like?
The publicly documented modern icon is a rounded-square camera outline with a central circular lens and a small circle near the upper-right corner, set against a multicolor gradient. The 2022 asset record describes a version of the simplified mark introduced in 2016; it is not evidence of a wholly unrelated redesign. See the 2022 icon asset record and the 2016 icon record. These are useful for reference, but Meta’s current resources—not a third-party copy—should guide a live brand use. Exact color values and rules for different contexts should come from the current official guide.

How the Instagram logo has changed

Instagram is a Meta service, but the Instagram mark is not Meta’s corporate logo. Meta’s 2019 announcement explained its corporate identity separately from the identities of its products: Introducing our new company brand.
Where to get an Instagram logo or icon
- Start with Meta Brand Resources. Check for the current Instagram-specific asset and applicable guidelines before using it. Meta’s Terms of Service direct people to Brand Resources for trademark and logo use.
- Use official Meta or Instagram materials when confirming a current version, but check that the file is intended for your use.
- Use Wikimedia Commons or Meta-Wiki for historical reference, such as inspecting a documented 2016 or 2022 vector. Those records are not the authority for permission to use the trademark.
- Treat third-party logo-download sites cautiously. A file may be old, altered, poorly traced, or labeled with an inaccurate licensing claim. Search ranking and a filename such as “Instagram.svg” do not establish provenance.
If no suitable asset or permission is clear from Meta’s current resources, do not substitute an unofficial file and present it as authorized.

Which file format should you use?

Do not enlarge a screenshot of the app icon and expect a clean result. Nor does vector format make an asset official: check where it came from, whether it is current, and whether its use is permitted. Do not recolor or reshape an asset simply to make it fit a design.
Can you use the Instagram logo?
Instagram’s terms say its trademarks and other intellectual property may be used only as expressly permitted by its brand guidelines or with prior written permission. Its help material treats names, symbols, and designs such as logos as trademark-relevant intellectual property and explains that trademark rules address confusion about affiliation or sponsorship. Identification and links
A social link that clearly takes people to your Instagram profile, or an article that identifies Instagram in a factual discussion, is different in purpose from making Instagram appear to sponsor your business. These examples are practical distinctions, not a legal guarantee; follow the current official rules and avoid implying approval.
Uses that need particular care
- Making the icon part of your own company logo, product identity, packaging, or merchandise.
- Using it in paid advertising, co-branding, or partnership claims that could imply Instagram or Meta approved, certified, or sponsored you.
- Combining it with another brand into a new lockup, or changing its colors, proportions, or geometry.
- Using it to support a claim such as “official Instagram partner” without authorization.
For a campaign where the mark is central to the product, packaging, advertising, or claimed partnership, seek written permission and jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

Copyright is not the same as trademark permission
A simplified geometric mark may have limited copyright protection in some places or circumstances. That does not make unrestricted commercial use safe: trademark rights and rules against misleading affiliation can still apply, and laws vary by country. A public asset page’s copyright assessment is not worldwide legal clearance. Avoid the blanket claim that the Instagram logo is “free to use.”

- Get a current asset from Meta’s Brand Resources and confirm the intended use is allowed.
- Choose a transparent PNG or an SVG that is supplied for and permitted in your use case. Test the SVG in your target browsers.
- Link the graphic to the correct Instagram profile URL and use an accessible name for the link.
- Check keyboard focus, contrast, and legibility on desktop and mobile; use dimensions appropriate to the layout.
- Test the link and ensure surrounding copy or presentation does not imply endorsement.
For example, if the image is decorative inside a link whose accessible label already names the destination, give it empty alternative text:

</a>If the image itself supplies the link’s accessible name instead, use meaningful alternative text such as alt="Instagram" and ensure the link destination is clear. Accessibility labels identify the control; they do not grant trademark permission.
Fixing common Instagram asset problems
- Blurry when enlarged: the source is probably a small raster image. Obtain an appropriately sized authorized file rather than scaling up a screenshot.
- Gradient missing or rendering black: the SVG may use unsupported features, be incomplete, or be a monochrome glyph rather than the full-color icon. Re-download from the official source; use an official PNG if SVG rendering remains unreliable.
- White box around the mark: the file may have a solid background rather than transparency. Confirm the asset in a viewer before placing it.
- Unusually large SVG: it may contain an embedded bitmap or unnecessary metadata. Inspect it in a current browser and vector editor; do not assume the extension means it is clean vector artwork.
- Unexpected shape or colors: the file may be historical, unofficial, or modified. Check its source and version rather than attempting to “correct” it by tracing or recoloring.
- Wordmark looks wrong when recreated as text: branded lettering is not necessarily interchangeable with an ordinary font that looks similar. Use the appropriate authorized artwork.
For a regulated, prominent, or commercial campaign, do not repair a questionable file for public use; obtain an approved asset or permission, and seek legal review where appropriate.
