The best interior paint color depends on your room’s light, fixed finishes and the mood you want—not a popularity list alone. This curated shortlist of 20 established Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore colors offers flexible neutrals, soft blue-greens and dramatic accents, followed by a practical way to sample them before painting. Current 2026 colors add timely options, but a trend is no substitute for testing a color in your own space.
20 interior paint colors to consider
This is a curated shortlist, not a universal ranking. Sherwin-Williams describes its selections as “consistent customer favorites,” while Benjamin Moore presents its popular colors as versatile and timeless. Popularity is a useful starting point, but the same paint can look different from room to room.
| Color | Character | Where to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt | Muted blue-green | Bedrooms, baths or living areas where a calm, nature-linked color suits the furnishings. Sherwin-Williams positions it as serene. |
| Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black | Near-black | Accent walls, cabinetry or a full room when you want a dramatic effect. |
| Sherwin-Williams Alabaster | Soft off-white | A light foundation for rooms where a stark white would feel too crisp. |
| Sherwin-Williams Balanced Beige | Flexible greige-taupe neutral | Connected spaces with warm wood or earthy furnishings. |
| Sherwin-Williams Urbane Bronze | Deep earthy neutral | Feature walls or cabinetry that benefit from a grounded, substantial tone. |
| Sherwin-Williams Tony Taupe | Inviting warm taupe | Rooms where you want a warm neutral with more presence than off-white. |
| Sherwin-Williams Network Gray | Restrained blue-gray | Spaces that call for a cooler, subdued color rather than a bright blue. |
| Sherwin-Williams Black Fox | Dark accent neutral | Trim, built-ins or a focal wall that can carry a dark shade. |
| Sherwin-Williams Drift of Mist | Light neutral | Bedrooms and living areas where a quiet, airy backdrop is desired. |
| Sherwin-Williams Shoji White | Warm off-white | Rooms where a soft white works better with warm finishes than a cooler white. |
| Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17 | Versatile off-white | Kitchens and trim, as well as walls when a gentle white is preferred. |
| Benjamin Moore Simply White OC-117 | Clean white | Walls or trim when you want a brighter, clean-looking white. |
| Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter HC-172 | Balanced greige | Shared living spaces that need a neutral with more depth than a pale white. |
| Benjamin Moore Pale Oak OC-20 | Light, quiet neutral | Bedrooms and other rooms where a subtle backdrop is the goal. |
| Benjamin Moore Black Bean Soup 2130-10 | Saturated brown-black | A deliberate accent on walls, cabinetry or other architectural details. |
| Benjamin Moore Wenge AF-180 | Deep brown | A statement shade for a feature wall or room designed around a dark palette. |
| Benjamin Moore Hale Navy HC-154 | Classic dark blue | Cabinetry, built-ins or a focal wall that needs a strong blue anchor. |
| Benjamin Moore Antique Pewter 1560 | Neutral with depth | Rooms where a subdued neutral should feel richer than a very pale shade. |
| Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray HC-165 | Blue-gray | A cooler alternative to beige or taupe for walls or accents. |
| Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray HC-173 | Adaptable warm neutral | Connected rooms and living areas where a warm, understated wall color is useful. |
Use the descriptions as a first filter, not a guarantee of how a color will read in your home. Check each candidate against flooring, counters, upholstery and woodwork before settling on it.
How to choose the right color for your room
Start with undertone and temperature
Warm whites, beiges and taupes often sit comfortably beside wood and earthy furnishings. Blue-greens and blue-grays move a room in a cooler, calmer direction. Compare a sample directly with the fixed materials that will remain in the room; a wall color can make a floor or counter appear more yellow, pink or cool by contrast.

Account for light and room exposure
Natural light changes a paint color’s appearance over the day. Benjamin Moore recommends using its Colors by Direction guidance and sampling colors. As a practical rule of thumb, a north-facing room may benefit from a warmer choice, while a bright, sunlit room can often handle a stronger or cooler color. Treat that as a starting point, not a fixed rule: windows, trees, neighboring buildings and interior lighting all affect what you see.
Match saturation to the mood
Sea Salt offers a soft blue-green direction; Sherwin-Williams characterizes it as serene and natural. Pale choices such as Alabaster, Drift of Mist, White Dove, Simply White and Pale Oak are useful starting points for a whole-home palette because they are visually restrained. Tricorn Black, dark charcoals, navy and brown-black shades create more drama and can turn a wall, cabinet or full room into a focal point.

Consider how the room is used
For connected public areas, a quiet neutral can help rooms flow together. A stronger hue can define a dining nook, office or other focal area. As practical painting guidance, consider a washable eggshell or satin product for busy rooms; the color list itself does not establish which paint finish or product line is most durable for your particular use.

Plan the contrast, not just the wall color
A light wall beside darker trim or furnishings can add definition. Conversely, deep walls with lighter trim can make a room feel more enclosed and intentional. Test the wall and trim colors together in the actual room rather than judging them as separate swatches.

2026 paint color trends worth knowing
These current selections show where major brands are directing attention; they are options to test, not a reason to repaint around a trend.
- Universal Khaki SW 6150, Sherwin-Williams: The brand’s 2026 Color of the Year is described as a mid-tone neutral with a slight yellow undertone. Sherwin-Williams says it works with natural finishes, crisp whites and bold color accents, and recommends Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex for applying it. See Sherwin-Williams’ 2026 color announcement.
- Silhouette AF-655, Benjamin Moore: The brand’s 2026 Color of the Year is a rich brown-charcoal. Its coordinating palette includes Swiss Coffee, Sherwood Tan, First Crush, Raindance, Narragansett Green and Southwest Pottery. Details are on Benjamin Moore’s 2026 Color of the Year page.
- Hidden Gem, BEHR: BEHR’s September 1, 2025 article describes its 2026 Color Trends palette as 20 shades across neutrals, accents, pastels and cool mid-tones, led by Hidden Gem. It also names Curtain Call and the prior-year color Rumors. See BEHR’s 2026 Color Trends announcement.
A neutral you have sampled and enjoyed may serve you longer than a trend color. Evaluate a trend shade by the same room-specific criteria as any other paint.

How to test paint colors before committing
Both major paint brands emphasize sampling. Benjamin Moore says sampling is the only way to know which of its colors will look best in a bedroom, and its 2026 page cautions that screen colors may differ from paint. Sherwin-Williams likewise recommends visualizing and testing large samples because lighting can dramatically alter a shade’s appearance.
- Shortlist three candidates. Choose colors that fit your undertone, light and furnishings rather than testing every shade on the list.
- Get physical samples. Use peel-and-stick samples or paint sample boards. A screen image is not a substitute for seeing the color in the room.
- Place samples on more than one wall. A wall across from a window may look different from one beside it. Keep samples large enough to judge their effect at a glance.
- Check them at different times. Look in morning and evening light and with the room’s usual lights on. Keep the sheen the same when comparing painted samples.
- Compare against permanent finishes. View each option next to floors, counters, tile, trim, cabinetry and large upholstery pieces.
- Choose only after seeing the full combination. If the color or its contrast with the room’s finishes feels wrong in any important lighting condition, test another candidate before painting the whole room.
Choose the color first, then the paint product
Color selection and paint-line performance are separate decisions. A color sample helps you judge the shade in your room; product ratings address how a paint performed under specified test conditions and do not predict every wall or application.

For example, Sherwin-Williams recommends Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex for Universal Khaki; that product recommendation does not establish that Emerald is necessary for other colors or rooms.
