Do not attempt to burn fractal patterns into plywood with electricity. The Make article behind this title describes a Lichtenberg-pattern demonstration, not a safe home craft. It reports applying 2,000 volts to plywood with two microwave-oven transformers and explicitly calls the project “potentially very dangerous.” Fatalities associated with fractal wood burning have since been documented by workplace-safety authorities.
What “fractal burning” means
Lichtenberg, or fractal, wood burning uses electrical current to create branching, lightning-like marks in wood. The branching appearance comes from current paths through the material rather than from an ordinary heated tool or flame.
In Craig Couden’s June 10, 2015 Make article, the demonstration uses 5 mm plywood. The article says two microwave-oven transformers are connected in parallel and that 2,000 volts are applied to opposite corners of the sheet. It also describes spreading a baking-soda-and-water mixture over the surface to improve conductivity, with the resulting marks tending to follow the wood grain.

Make’s own warning says: “This project is potentially very dangerous, so don’t try this without doing proper research and taking the proper safety precautions.” That warning should not be read as evidence that a homemade setup can be made safe.

Why this is not a suitable DIY art project
High voltage can remain lethal even when equipment appears inactive
The described apparatus involves high-voltage transformer equipment and an energized workpiece. Contact with an energized part, an unexpected conductive path, stored electrical energy, or a fault in improvised wiring can cause fatal shock, burns, fire, or involuntary muscle contraction that prevents escape.
Documented deaths are associated with the practice
- An OSHA inspection record describes a January 16, 2019 workplace fatality in which an employee using homemade fractal Lichtenberg wood-burning equipment was electrocuted after contacting an energized part.
- An OSHA accident record describes a fatal electrocution on June 16, 2017 during fractal wood burning.
- In an April 25, 2022 warning, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) quoted its president, Brett Brenner: “This form of wood burning is highly dangerous and should never be used as fires, injuries, and electrocution can easily occur.”
That ESFI page also reported that the American Association of Woodturners attributed at least 33 deaths to fractal burning since 2016. The figure was published by ESFI in 2022; it is not a current census and should not be confused with OSHA’s individual incident records.

- (1)wood burning kit should have the ability to burn black and dark colors at high temperatures, (2) burning wood tool should have a very low temperature and be able to paint very light and light colors, (3) professional wood burning kit should be able to accurately control the temperature function, and the temperature should be constant. (4) the diameter size of wood burn pen handle should not be too thick or too small, and it should be suitable for finely controlling the movement of the pen holder, (5) The closer the tip of the wood burning metal pen is to the hand, the better it can be used to better control the tip of the pen in painting.
What to do if you find plans or equipment
- Do not energize a homemade fractal-burning device, even for a test or demonstration.
- Do not treat gloves, a circuit breaker, a grounding wire, or a written checklist as making the process safe.
- Keep people, pets, and combustible materials away from any device that may still be connected to power.
- If equipment is connected or someone has been shocked, do not touch the person or apparatus until power has been disconnected by a competent professional; call emergency services and follow their instructions.
Safer ways to make branching designs on wood
If the goal is a lightning-like appearance, choose a non-electrical method such as painting, ink, carving, or a commercially manufactured decorative product designed for that purpose. These approaches do not reproduce the electrical process described by Make, but they avoid deliberately energizing wet wood with high voltage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any alternative tool or finish.

The Make project is best understood as documentation of a hazardous electrical experiment, not a how-to project for a home workshop. Its reported 2,000-volt setup, the fatalities recorded by OSHA, and ESFI’s advice against fractal wood burning all point to the same practical conclusion: do not build or operate this equipment.
