“Photoshop not working” can mean several different failures: it may not launch, crash or freeze, run slowly, produce the wrong tool result, refuse to open or save a file, or reject your subscription. Start by identifying the symptom, then test the least disruptive cause first. In most cases, restarting, checking Adobe’s known issues, updating, isolating plug-ins and the GPU, resetting preferences, and checking storage resolve the problem without an immediate reinstall.
Identify the failure before changing anything

Adobe’s general troubleshooting guide treats crashes, updates, GPU problems, preferences, plug-ins, fonts, tools, permissions and licensing as separate categories: Adobe Photoshop basic troubleshooting.

Do these safe checks first
- If Photoshop still responds, save the document or copy it to another location. For a long operation, wait briefly and press
Escto cancel when possible. - Quit Photoshop normally. If it will not quit, force-close it through Windows or macOS.
- Restart the computer.
- Check Adobe’s known and fixed issues for your exact Photoshop version. Adobe’s page currently references the 27.x release line, but version numbers change.
- Update Photoshop, Creative Cloud and the operating system.
- Reopen the document from an internal local drive rather than a network, removable or actively synchronized folder.
Back up custom workspaces, shortcuts, actions, presets and plug-ins before resetting preferences or deleting caches. Those operations can remove custom settings.
Photoshop will not open or crashes during launch
Skip optional and third-party plug-ins
- Close Photoshop.
- Hold Shift while launching it.
- When Photoshop asks whether to skip optional and third-party plug-ins, choose Yes.
- Test a blank document and the task that previously failed.
If Photoshop now works, re-enable plug-ins one at a time. A plug-in that worked in an older release may not support the current Photoshop version, operating system, Apple Silicon or Intel mode, or GPU configuration. The documented procedure is in Adobe’s crash and freeze guide.
Reset preferences
Corrupted preferences can cause launch failures, program errors and strange interface or tool behavior. If Photoshop opens, use its built-in preference-reset command. If it does not, follow Adobe’s current operating-system-specific reset instructions rather than relying on an old keyboard shortcut; labels and shortcuts can change between versions.
Check scratch-disk space
Photoshop uses scratch disks as temporary working storage when available RAM is not enough. A full scratch disk can prevent startup, cause freezes and slow operations even when the computer has plenty of RAM.

- Windows:
Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks - macOS:
Photoshop > Settings > Scratch Disks
Select a suitable drive with ample free space, put the fastest suitable drive first, and restart Photoshop. Adobe recommends an internal SSD where possible. The required space varies with document dimensions, bit depth, layers, filters and history states; there is no reliable single minimum. See Adobe’s scratch-disk instructions.
Check permissions and security software
On macOS, missing permissions, including Full Disk Access where required, can interfere with launching, saving and cross-application workflows. Update antivirus software first. If you understand the security risk, briefly test with Photoshop excluded or protection paused, then re-enable protection immediately. If the conflict is confirmed, contact the security vendor instead of leaving protection disabled.
Test fonts
Problematic or duplicate fonts can crash Photoshop at launch, hang the Type tool, or freeze the Character panel. Validate fonts and remove duplicates using your operating system’s font manager.
For a deeper test, close Photoshop and Creative Cloud completely, back up the cache location, then remove the CT Font Cache folder:

Empty Trash or Recycle Bin and relaunch. Adobe documents these locations in its crash and freeze troubleshooting.
Photoshop crashes, freezes or displays corrupted graphics
Use the GPU as an isolation test
- Open
Edit > Preferences > Performanceon Windows orPhotoshop > Settings > Performanceon macOS. - Clear Use Graphics Processor.
- Restart Photoshop.
- Repeat the operation that caused the crash, freeze, flicker or incorrect rendering.
If the problem disappears, investigate the GPU driver, GPU compatibility, multiple-monitor setup and Photoshop graphics options. A current driver can still be incompatible; disabling the GPU is a diagnostic step, not a universal permanent fix, and GPU-dependent features may be slower or unavailable. Consider safe-mode and account tests
If Photoshop works in the operating system’s safe mode, a driver, startup utility or security program is implicated. Testing with a new operating-system user account can reveal damaged user permissions or profile files. These tests are useful after plug-ins, preferences and GPU isolation have been tried.
Photoshop opens but is slow or lagging
Test a genuinely local document
- Save a copy to the computer’s internal drive.
- Close the network, cloud-sync or removable-drive copy.
- Open the local copy and compare zooming, panning, saving and filters.
A cloud folder can look local while a file is downloading, synchronizing or locked by another process. Adobe’s support guidance is intended for local hard-disk use and notes that network storage can slow access: Photoshop slow or lagging.

Review RAM and history settings
Open Edit > Preferences > Performance on Windows or Photoshop > Settings > Performance on macOS. Adobe says Photoshop uses 70% of available RAM by default and advises avoiding allocations above 85%; these are guidance values, not a guarantee for every workload. Leave memory for the operating system and other applications.
Adobe’s current documentation allows up to 1,000 history states and lists 50 as the default. Large documents can consume substantial memory and scratch space when many states are retained. Reduce history states for demanding work, avoid extreme cache settings, restart Photoshop after major changes, and watch the Efficiency Indicator. See Performance preferences.
Check storage, GPU and competing applications
- Ensure the selected scratch disk has free space and is not a slow network or nearly full external drive.
- Run the GPU isolation test described above.
- Close browsers, video editors and other memory-intensive applications.
- Note whether the slowdown occurs only with very large documents, 4K displays, particular filters or synchronized files.
Photoshop tools are not behaving correctly
Before changing application-wide settings, check the document state:
- The intended layer is selected, visible and unlocked.
- A selection or layer mask is not restricting the edit.
- Opacity and flow are not zero.
- The blend mode and foreground color are appropriate.
- The document’s color mode and bit depth support the operation.
- The intended target layer, brush preset and tool options are selected.
Reset the active tool from its options-bar preset control with Reset Tool. If several tools are affected, choose Reset All Tools. Test in a new blank document. If the behavior remains, reset preferences; if the result is visually corrupted rather than absent, perform the GPU test. Adobe lists tool resets among its basic troubleshooting steps.

A file will not open or save
- Determine whether one document fails or every document fails.
- Copy the problem file to an internal local drive.
- Open a new blank document and then a different existing file.
- Check free space on the destination and scratch disk.
- Check read/write permissions for the file and folder.
- Try saving a copy to another folder.
- Where appropriate, test a simple format such as PSD, TIFF, PNG or JPEG.
If only one document fails, suspect corruption, an unsupported format, a missing linked asset or a storage problem rather than Photoshop itself. Adobe notes that Photoshop needs read/write access to saved-file folders and to the root folder of non-boot drives assigned as scratch disks: Adobe basic troubleshooting.
Photoshop will not update or install
- Confirm the computer meets the requirements for the exact Photoshop major version.
- Leave at least the required installation space. Adobe currently lists 10 GB available for installation and recommends 100 GB, with additional temporary space needed during installation.
- Update the Creative Cloud desktop app and restart the computer.
- Check account and administrator permissions.
- Review security software exclusions only as a controlled test.
- Undo or avoid cleanup utilities that remove Adobe files; Adobe specifically warns that tools such as CleanMyMac or MacKeeper can modify files required for updates.
- Do not install Photoshop on a case-sensitive file system where Adobe lists that configuration as unsupported.
Requirements differ by Photoshop release, Windows or macOS version, processor architecture and GPU. Adobe’s current requirements page for desktop Photoshop is here. For the 27.x line, Adobe lists at least 8 GB RAM (16 GB or more recommended), a Windows GPU with DirectX 12 feature level 12_0 or later, at least 1.5 GB GPU memory, and internet access for activation and online services. Do not apply those figures automatically to every older release.
Photoshop says the subscription cannot be verified
- Open Creative Cloud and confirm you are signed in to the intended Adobe account.
- Check internet access and the account status shown in Creative Cloud.
- Sign out and back in if the account appears stuck.
- Confirm the subscription has not expired or been canceled.
- Follow Adobe’s licensing guidance or contact Creative Cloud support.
Do not use modified executables, unofficial activation tools or cracked installers. Licensing errors are account and Creative Cloud issues, not GPU or scratch-disk failures.
When updating, rolling back or reinstalling makes sense
Update first when
The issue matches a documented bug, the installed version is unsupported, or Adobe has fixed compatibility with your operating system or GPU. Adobe’s support policy says bug fixes are focused on the current Photoshop version, while technical support and security fixes cover the current and prior versions; verify the current policy before relying on it.

If the problem began immediately after an update and ordinary diagnostics fail, record the exact version and test a previous version through Creative Cloud. This can identify a regression or plug-in incompatibility; it is not proof that the older version is safer or supported indefinitely.
Reinstall last
Reinstall after checking preferences, plug-ins, GPU behavior, fonts, storage, permissions and updates, or when Creative Cloud files are damaged. Reinstalling will not repair a corrupted document, full scratch disk, bad font, defective driver, insufficient permissions or unsupported hardware.

When to contact Adobe or stop troubleshooting
- Photoshop still crashes in a blank document after plug-ins are skipped and preferences are reset.
- The issue persists with the GPU disabled.
- Multiple applications also crash, or the computer reports disk, RAM, GPU or operating-system errors.
- Important documents may be corrupted.
- The failure began after a system update and affects other software.
Before submitting a crash report or support case, record the Photoshop version, operating system and build, GPU and driver, plug-ins, document location, exact error text, and which isolation tests changed the behavior. That information is more useful than reinstalling without identifying the failure.
