Yes. Fraens has designed a manually operated, eight-shaft table loom that can be made with 3D-printed parts. It is intended for experimenting with complex weaving drafts in a compact footprint, not for replacing a full-size production loom. The design uses lever-controlled shafts, printable STL files, an overview drawing, and a parts guide.
What the Fraens loom is
The loom is a small table-top weaving machine built around eight shafts. Each shaft is raised with a manual lever, allowing the weaver to form sheds for patterns that would be difficult to manage on a simple rigid-heddle loom.
Fraens provides the digital build package in STL format, along with an overview drawing in DXF/PDF and a parts page identifying hardware and other purchased components. The files support a low-cost digital-fabrication approach, but the project still requires a working 3D printer, mechanical hardware, weaving yarn and time for assembly and setup.

How complex patterns are woven
Work from a weaving draft
The loom does not generate patterns automatically in its basic form. You follow a draft: thread each warp end through the numbered shafts, read the lift sequence row by row, raise the specified levers, pass the shuttle, and beat the weft with the reed.
Fraens recommends the free Quickdraw software for creating or modifying drafts and previewing the resulting pattern before you begin threading. That preview is useful when checking shaft order and identifying a sequence that will be awkward to operate by hand.

- Premium Material - Constructed by high quality wood, an exquisite epitome of a real loom that allows children to experience the joy of weaving. Excellent for training children’s hands-on skills and good for their attention.
- Foldaway Structure - Foldaway design saves you plenty of space after playing with it.
- Accessories - Comes with 2 screws, 4 anti-skid stickers, 4 shuttles and a ball of string, with which you can fully enjoy the pleasure of weaving.
- Perfect Size - Measures 38 × 32 × 27cm when unfolded, especially suitable for developing your weaving skills or teaching your kids how to use a weaving machine. Just improve your skills in knitting and make some stylish clothing for your family.
- Easy Operations - Comes with a menu for easy installations and operations. Makes a good company for your children. Just unfold and stabilize the machine with the enclosed screws, then enjoy weaving your style!
Manual sequence management
With the standard build, the weaver must remember or read each lift combination while working. Eight shafts provide considerably more patterning potential than a basic two- or four-shaft arrangement, but every additional sequence still has to be selected correctly at the loom.
Printed parts, yarn and hardware
Filament and printed dimensions
- Filament: the documented prototype uses PLA for its printed parts.
- Heddle holes: one prototype guide specifies 3 mm holes.
- Warp example: the same implementation uses 1.5 mm cotton warp.
- Reed spacing: the documented reed is 9.4 dents per inch, or 3.7 dents per centimetre.
These figures describe a particular documented implementation rather than a universal yarn specification. Your yarn size, sett and reed must work together: a thicker warp may not pass comfortably through the stated heddle holes, while a finer yarn can produce a looser fabric at the same spacing.

Non-printed components
The parts guide identifies hardware that must be purchased in addition to filament. Plan for shafts, levers, axles or pivots, reed components, the shuttle and a way to anchor and tension the warp. Check the current Fraens parts list before buying, because hardware dimensions and availability depend on the exact revision you build.
Optional Dobby control
Mechanical Dobby upgrade
Fraens documents a mechanical Dobby upgrade that helps mark longer lift sequences, reducing the need to remember every combination manually. Its warp-based mechanism is limited to approximately 40–50 different settings, according to the upgrade documentation. That makes it useful for drafts that are repetitive or moderately long, but it is not a practical solution for unlimited pattern storage.

Arduino E-Dobby route
An Arduino-based E-Dobby design is the better fit when you want programmable selection of more intricate sequences. It moves pattern control into electronics rather than relying on a manually indexed mechanical arrangement. Treat the board, sensors, drivers and wiring as design-specific: verify compatibility with the exact E-Dobby version before ordering components or printing brackets.
| Configuration | How shafts are selected | Best use | Known constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base loom | Manual levers | Learning, sampling and drafts you can read comfortably while weaving | The weaver performs every lift sequence |
| Mechanical Dobby | Warp-based mechanical sequence marking | Longer repeating sequences without full electronic control | Approximately 40–50 settings |
| Arduino E-Dobby | Programmable electronic control | More intricate or repetitive drafts | Requires compatible electronics and additional integration work |
What building and weaving are like
Assembly and calibration
- Print the STL parts in the material specified by the build documentation, using your printer’s normal dimensional-calibration checks.
- Sort printed pieces against the overview drawing and parts list before assembly.
- Install the shafts, levers, pivots and reed so each moving part travels without rubbing or binding.
- Thread a short test warp, verify that each lever raises the intended shaft, and correct shaft order before committing to a full draft.
- Set warp tension gradually. Check that the shed opens consistently and that the reed can beat the weft without displacing the warp.
Threading and operating routine
- Prepare the warp and identify the ends that belong to each numbered shaft.
- Thread the warp through the heddle holes and reed according to the draft and the chosen sett.
- Read the first lift sequence, raise those shafts with the levers, and pass the shuttle through the shed.
- Lower or change the shafts for the next row, then beat the weft with the reed.
- Repeat the sequence while checking the fabric edge and tension regularly.
Strengths and limitations
Why it is appealing
- Digital files make the design accessible to makers who already own a 3D printer.
- The table-top format is portable and takes less space than a floor loom.
- Lever control offers access to patterns that need several shafts without immediately requiring motors or software.
- The same basic frame can be extended with mechanical or electronic Dobby concepts.
Where expectations need to be realistic
A user report describing a sample build mentions a very small weaving area, a small shed and difficulty maintaining tension. That is anecdotal experience, not a controlled performance test, but it is a useful warning to prototype your warp and fabric width before planning a large project.

The published design information does not establish a production speed, maximum durable width, long-term part life or comparative cost against commercial table looms. PLA parts can also require careful handling around heat and mechanical stress; use the documented design limits rather than assuming industrial-loom durability.
Is it suitable for your project?
Good fit
- You want to learn shaft weaving or test intricate drafts at sample scale.
- You already have access to a 3D printer and are comfortable sourcing hardware.
- You value an open, modifiable design over a ready-to-weave commercial package.
- Your planned fabric is narrow enough for the documented working area and shed.
Consider another loom first
- You need a broad cloth width, large sheds or continuous production.
- You need predictable tension, take-up and repeatability without extensive tuning.
- You do not want to print, calibrate and troubleshoot mechanical parts.
- Your draft requires more sequence storage than the mechanical Dobby can provide and you do not want to integrate electronics.
Practical buying and build checklist
- Confirm the current Fraens file revision and license before printing.
- Budget for PLA, hardware, reed and shuttle components, warp and weft yarn, and any replacement prints.
- Match yarn diameter and sett to the heddle-hole and reed dimensions you are using.
- Decide whether manual levers are sufficient before committing to a Dobby upgrade.
- If choosing E-Dobby, verify the Arduino-compatible board and all electronic interfaces against that design.
- Start with a short, narrow sample to expose threading, shed and tension problems early.
Bottom line
Fraens’ 3D-printed loom is a credible way to explore complex shaft weaving on a tabletop. Its eight-shaft lever system, printable files and optional Dobby paths make it more capable than a simple beginner loom, while the small working area and reported tension challenges point toward sampling and experimentation rather than large-scale weaving. Build it when the making process is part of the appeal and your projects fit its compact scale.
