For most decorative gun models, cosplay replicas, cases, mounts, rails, and other non-pressure-bearing accessories, start with a reputable PETG filament matched to your printer’s diameter and material profile. Choose PLA or tough PLA when easy printing matters most, and move to nylon only when you have the high-temperature hardware and moisture-control workflow it requires.

Safety boundary: This guidance does not establish that any filament is suitable for pressure-bearing firearm components. A printed part’s safety depends on its design, loading, manufacturing process, and intended use; no material recommendation here should be treated as approval for components exposed to firearm pressure.

The short answer

PETG is the best general starting category for a durable, high-quality accessory that does not bear firearm pressure. UltiMaker describes PETG as combining printability with toughness, chemical resistance, wear resistance, and temperature resistance. It is a practical middle ground between easy-to-print PLA and more demanding engineering materials.

Use PLA or tough PLA for low-stress display models and cosplay pieces where surface appearance and straightforward printing are more important than heat resistance. Consider nylon (PA) for an advanced accessory that needs greater toughness or heat capability, but only if your printer supports the required temperatures and you can keep the filament dry. ABS or ASA can suit enclosed-printer users who need more heat or weather-oriented performance, although ABS is more difficult to print and can warp.

Stay within the safe use case

The recommendations here apply to decorative models, cosplay replicas, display pieces, grips, cases, mounts, rails, and similar accessories that are not exposed to firearm pressure. They do not validate receivers, barrels, chambers, firing components, or any other pressure-bearing firearm part.

Even for a non-pressure-bearing accessory, consider impact, heat, fastening loads, and the consequences of failure. A part that looks like a firearm component may still be unsuitable if it carries significant mechanical loads. When the intended use is uncertain, treat the part as unsuitable for a hobby filament recommendation and seek qualified engineering advice.

Choose by the part you are making

Decorative gun models and low-stress cosplay

PLA is usually the sensible first choice when the model is primarily visual. It is easy to print and widely supported, making it useful for large display pieces, props, and costume accessories that will not sit in a hot vehicle or carry a significant load. Tough PLA is worth considering when you want a little more impact tolerance without moving to a moisture-sensitive engineering material.

General-purpose grips, cases, mounts, and rails

For a non-pressure-bearing accessory that will be handled, fastened, or exposed to ordinary wear, PETG is the balanced option. Its documented toughness, chemical resistance, wear resistance, and temperature resistance give it more margin than basic PLA for many workshop and display uses. Select a filament with a profile for your specific printer rather than assuming every PETG spool behaves identically.

Heat, wear, or demanding service conditions

Nylon is the advanced choice when the accessory needs higher toughness or heat capability and your equipment can actually process it. UltiMaker and Prusa both emphasize that nylon’s benefits depend on printer capability and process control. Plan to dry the spool before printing, protect it from humidity during storage, and use the manufacturer’s recommended nozzle, bed, enclosure, and cooling settings.

Outdoor or higher-temperature applications

ABS and ASA are alternatives for users with an enclosed printer and suitable ventilation. They can be preferable to basic PLA when heat or weather exposure is a concern. ABS, however, is more prone to warping and is trickier to print, so it is not the easiest upgrade from PLA. Confirm the enclosure, ventilation, and profile requirements for the exact material you buy.

Is PETG stronger than PLA?

For this topic, PETG is generally the better choice when you need a tougher, more serviceable accessory, while PLA remains attractive for rigid, low-stress display work. “Stronger” is not a single property, though. Printed-part performance also depends on wall thickness, infill, layer bonding, print orientation, cooling, and other settings.

UltiMaker identifies nylon, polycarbonate, and carbon-fiber composites as options when maximum tensile strength is required. That material comparison does not make a printed firearm part safe for pressure loads, and it does not replace engineering validation for a loaded accessory.

Printer and spool checks before you buy

  1. Verify diameter: Confirm whether your printer accepts 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm filament. Buying the wrong diameter can prevent reliable feeding.
  2. Match the profile: Use the printer manufacturer’s profile when available, then compare it with the filament maker’s nozzle, bed, enclosure, and cooling recommendations.
  3. Check hardware limits: Make sure the hot end, heated bed, build surface, enclosure, and cooling system meet the material’s requirements. Nylon commonly needs substantially more capability than PLA or PETG.
  4. Plan moisture control: For nylon, dry the spool as directed and store it in a genuinely dry container. Moisture can undermine print quality before the part is finished.
  5. Buy by specification first: Verified diameter, consistent material specification, and a usable profile matter more than color, branding, or surface finish.

How print settings affect accessory strength

Polymer choice is only one part of the result. Layer bonding determines how well a part resists forces between layers; orientation changes which direction those layers are loaded; and wall count, infill, cooling, and temperature affect stiffness and durability. A poorly oriented PETG part can perform worse than a carefully designed PLA part in a mild display application.

  • Orient the part so expected non-pressure loads do not pull layers apart when possible.
  • Use the material’s established profile as a baseline instead of guessing temperatures.
  • Inspect attachment points, thin walls, screw holes, and sharp corners, which often become failure locations.
  • Prototype fit and fastening with a low-cost test print before committing to a more expensive nylon or composite spool.

A practical buying decision

Choose PETG when

  • The accessory must tolerate ordinary handling, wear, or moderate heat better than PLA.
  • You want one versatile material for cases, mounts, rails, and durable display models.
  • Your printer already supports PETG and you can use a reliable profile.

Choose PLA or tough PLA when

  • The part is decorative, low-stress, and unlikely to experience heat.
  • You prioritize easy setup, broad compatibility, and predictable visual results.

Choose nylon when

  • Toughness, wear resistance, or heat capability justifies a more complex process.
  • Your printer supports the necessary temperatures and you can dry and store the filament correctly.

Choose ABS or ASA when

  • You have an enclosure and ventilation suited to the material.
  • Heat or outdoor exposure makes basic PLA a poor fit.

Final recommendation

Buy a reputable 1.75 mm PETG that has a profile for your printer if you need a single high-quality starting filament for non-pressure-bearing gun models and accessories. Use PLA or tough PLA for easy, low-stress display work; reserve nylon for printers and workflows equipped to manage heat and moisture; and select ABS or ASA only when you are prepared for enclosure, ventilation, and warping considerations. In every case, evaluate the part’s design and intended loads separately from the filament label.
