A dissolving microneedle patch could place a small tattoo design in skin, but the method remains an experimental proof of concept—not a do-it-yourself product shown to work on people. In a 2022 study, researchers tested patterned patches on excised pig skin and rats. The rat tattoos stayed visible for at least a year; that does not establish how long a tattoo would last on a person.
How the microneedle tattoo patch works
The researchers mixed tattoo ink with a water-soluble polymer and formed the mixture into an array of tiny needles on a patch. When pressed against skin, the needles penetrate and dissolve, depositing ink. Each needle acts like a pixel, so the array can form a simple image.
The study demonstrated colored, ultraviolet-visible, and thermochromic inks, along with patterns including symbols, letters, numbers, medical-alert designs, and QR codes. This is evidence that the patch can produce varied small designs in experimental settings, not that it can reproduce the detail or artistry of a conventional tattoo.

What the researchers tested—and what they found
Li, Kim, Lee, and Prausnitz published the peer-reviewed study in iScience on September 14, 2022. They demonstrated ink transfer on excised pig skin and conducted an animal study using rats; human volunteers were not tested.
The researchers reported that rat tattoos remained visible for at least one year, retaining their shape and color, though one design showed some distortion after a year. They observed no adverse skin reactions in the study. Those findings do not establish human safety, human comfort, or a guaranteed lasting result. The authors also note that skin texture and thickness can affect how needles penetrate and how the image looks.

Is it painless, quick, and suitable for self-application?
The authors describe the method as painless and bloodless, but the experiments do not establish how people would experience it. In the rat application protocol, a researcher applied thumb pressure for about 10 seconds, then left the patch in place on the skin for 15 minutes. The pressure time alone is not the full application time.
The paper suggests that self-administration may be possible; it does not validate a home-use procedure. The researchers also warn that an application mistake with permanent ink could have lasting cosmetic consequences. Temporary ink was discussed as a possibility but was not tested in the study.

How it differs from a conventional tattoo

The comparison is limited to what this paper tested and reported. It does not establish comparative clinical safety, relative pain in people, or consumer prices.
Is it available to buy, and does “cheap” mean under $1?
No tattoo-specific consumer patch is established as available for sale by the cited sources. The paper’s estimate of less than USD $1 per patch is an anticipated patch cost, not an observed retail price or a confirmed price for a product. Georgia Tech’s 2022 release said Micron Biomedical was developing microneedle patch technology toward commercialization; that statement does not show that this tattoo application reached the market. The university also disclosed that study researchers, including Mark Prausnitz, were inventors with ownership interests in Micron Biomedical and potential royalty interests in future sales related to the research.

The study supports a promising way to apply simple ink patterns in animal and excised-skin experiments; it does not yet answer how well the method would work, feel, or last on people.
