Short answer: Pat McGrath Mothership is the clearest high-end splurge in the cited U.S. coverage, at about $128. Its unusually broad finish range, strong pigment, buildability and reported low sparkly fallout can justify the price for frequent users. It is not automatically good value: Natasha Denona’s large palettes, Cle de Peau’s $110-plus quads and other luxury options make sense only when their specific colors, finishes or formats will be used often.

Prices varied sharply by country and currency, so the figures below are snapshots rather than a single global ranking. Harper’s Bazaar India’s February 2023 roundup listed Pat McGrath Mothership IX: Huetopian Dream at ₹9,261, Natasha Denona Biba at ₹12,700, Dior 5 Couleurs Denim at ₹5,600, Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk at ₹4,900 and Huda Beauty Empowered at ₹5,375. Wonderflaw’s 2023 U.S./European list put Mothership IX at $128, Natasha Denona I Need a Nude at $69, Tom Ford Eye Color Quad at $90, Dior Diorshow 5 Couleurs at $65, Chanel Les 4 Ombres at €65 and Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk at $55.
A LOOKFANTASTIC buyer guide showed Natasha Denona palettes from £41 to £205, with Metropolis, Sunset and Gold examples at £111 each. The Beauty Look Book’s September 2023 review put Cle de Peau eye quads at $110 or more. Insider Beauty’s database, accessed in 2026, lists Pat McGrath products from $28 to $128 and gives the Mothership Mega Eyeshadow Palette a 4.5/5 rating from 4,800 reviews.

Marie Claire’s review of Mothership VI: Midnight Sun describes 10 shades in matte, satin, shimmer and glitter finishes. The reviewer reports unusually strong pigment payoff, shades that build without becoming difficult to control, fine rather than chunky shimmer and wear that lasts for hours without noticeable sparkly fallout. That combination is the clearest evidence in the cited coverage for paying a premium: one compact can cover everyday mattes, reflective effects and more dramatic glitter looks.

Who should skip it
The price is harder to defend if you mainly wear one or two neutral shades, rarely use glitter or shimmer, or already own similar colors. Ten shades provide more combinations than a quad, but they also increase the chance that several pans sit untouched.

Natasha Denona: pay for scale only if you will use it
Natasha Denona occupies the same luxury conversation, with cited prices ranging from £41 to £205 and Biba listed at ₹12,700 in Harper’s Bazaar India. The value proposition is primarily palette scale and a preference for the brand’s formula and color curation. A large palette can replace several smaller purchases when you regularly use its full range; it is poor value when most shades duplicate products you own or do not suit your routine.
The available sources do not provide a controlled, head-to-head wear test against Pat McGrath, so neither brand can be declared objectively superior. Choose between them by finish preference, color story and likely use frequency rather than price alone.

Cle de Peau: beautiful, but the value objection is explicit
The Beauty Look Book praised Cle de Peau’s quality and colors but said it could not call the $110-plus quads worth the splurge. Its review specifically considered Dior 5 Couleurs, NARS palettes and Charlotte Tilbury better buys for similar pigment, adding that Cle de Peau’s price makes Natasha Denona and Pat McGrath feel comparatively inexpensive. Refillable or premium packaging may reduce compact waste, but that feature did not, in the reviewer’s judgment, overcome the initial cost.

Dior 5 Couleurs
Dior’s five-pan format was listed around $65 in U.S. coverage, with the Denim shade at ₹5,600 in India. It offers a luxury presentation and a smaller commitment than a Mothership, but fewer shades and combinations.
Chanel Les 4 Ombres
Wonderflaw listed Chanel’s four-pan Les 4 Ombres at €65. A quad can be easier to finish and simpler to coordinate, though it is less versatile than a 10- or 15-pan palette.
Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk
Marie Claire describes Pillow Talk as beginner-friendly, blendable, long-wearing and non-creasing. Its four-pan, pink-neutral story limits versatility, but that focus can be an advantage if those are the colors you wear repeatedly. The cited 2023 prices were $55 in U.S. coverage and ₹4,900 in India.

- List the shades you will actually wear. Count likely weekly-use colors, not the total number of pans.
- Identify the reason to upgrade. Pay a premium for a finish, texture or color you cannot readily get from your existing collection—not simply for logo or packaging.
- Match the format to your routine. Choose a quad for a fixed look; choose a larger palette only when you want several distinct looks.
