To crochet a fitted skull cap, work joined rounds from the crown downward: increase evenly until the crown matches the wearer’s required diameter, crochet even rounds to the desired depth, then add a snug edging. Measure the intended wearer and make a gauge swatch first—yarn, hook size and tension can change the finished measurements substantially.
What you need
- Yarn suited to the cap you want
- A crochet hook selected for that yarn and your gauge
- Scissors and a tapestry (yarn) needle
- Measuring tape
- Stitch markers (optional but useful for joined rounds)
FTK Crochet’s materials list uses a 50 g ball of Red Heart 100% wool and a 4 mm hook. The Lovable Loops skull-hat pattern uses worsted-weight yarn, an I-9 (5.5 mm) hook, a yarn needle and scissors.
Choose yarn, hook and gauge
Warm fitted cap
Worsted or aran yarn is the practical starting point for a warm cap. The Lovable Loops pattern specifies worsted yarn with a 5.5 mm (US I-9) hook. Ravelry’s Easy Skull Cap Beanie lists 11 stitches and 6 rows per 4 inches, uses 100–125 yards, and lists 5.5 mm and 6.0 mm hooks (Razonda Lee, listing from 2023, updated 2025).

Lightweight summer mesh
Mesh designs use more open stitches and can use a smaller hook. Zamiguz specifies a 4.0 mm hook and emphasizes matching the stated gauge through the first five rows. Ravelry’s Summer Mesh Skull Cap lists worsted yarn, a 4.0 mm hook, 17 stitches and 5 rows per 4 inches, 56–65 yards, and small-adult/teen and adult sizes (Maggie Haskell, 2026 listing).
These figures are pattern-specific, not universal targets. Crochet a swatch in the stitch pattern, count stitches and rows over 4 inches, and change hook size if your counts do not match. A tighter crocheter generally needs a larger hook; a looser crocheter generally needs a smaller one.

Measure the head and plan the fit
- Wrap a measuring tape around the head where the cap will sit, keeping it level and neither pulling it tight nor leaving it slack.
- Decide whether the cap should fit close to the head or have a little extra ease. Stretchy stitches and fibers can make the same measured circumference fit differently.
- Convert the target circumference to a crown diameter by dividing the circumference by 3.14. Stop crown increases when the crocheted circle reaches that diameter, checking it against the wearer rather than relying on a fixed stitch count.
FTK Crochet specifically cautions that yarn type, yarn size and crochet tension affect every measurement; its tutorial recommends taking the wearer’s own measurements rather than copying the medium size shown in the video.
Basic crown-down method
1. Make the center
Form a magic ring, or chain a short length and join it into a ring. Work the first round of double crochet into the ring and join the round. Place a marker at the beginning of each round if that helps you keep track.

2. Increase evenly
In the next rounds, distribute increases evenly around the circle. An evenly growing crown should lie flat. If it cups upward, add increases more often; if the edge ruffles, use fewer increases. Continue until the crown diameter matches the target you calculated and confirmed against the wearer.
3. Work the sides
Once the crown is wide enough, stop increasing and work the same number of stitches in each joined round. Continue until the cap reaches the desired depth, trying it on as you go when possible.

4. Finish the edge
Add a final single-crochet round or another snug edging. The Lovable Loops skull-hat pattern uses a final single-crochet round. Fasten off and weave the tail securely through the wrong side with a tapestry needle.

For a skull design, use contrasting yarn to stitch or crochet the eye sockets, nose and toothy mouth after the cap is complete. Position the face while the cap is laid flat, then try it on to check that the features remain centered when stretched. Secure all ends on the inside so they do not rub the wearer.

The two gauge measurements should not be compared as a universal rule: they belong to different patterns and stitch structures. Fit, stretch and drape still depend on your swatch and tension.

Troubleshooting fit
- Crown cups: increase more frequently in the next round or undo the round and redistribute increases.
- Crown ruffles: make fewer increases; excessive increases add circumference faster than the fabric can lie flat.
- Cap is too tight: check your stitch gauge, try a larger hook, or continue increasing for another round before working even.
- Cap is too loose: check your gauge, try a smaller hook, or stop increasing sooner.
- Cap is too short: add even rounds before the edging.
- Cap is too deep: remove an even round if possible, or fold the excess into the edging on the next version.

- The side rounds cover the intended depth.
- The edging feels secure without cutting into the head.
