The best light gray depends on the room, its daylight, and the finishes around it—not on a single universally neutral shade. Benjamin Moore’s light-gray collection offers 12 useful starting points, including colors with warm, cool, and less predictable reactions to light. Compare the exact swatches in your room before committing to gallons.

How to choose a light gray that works in your room
1. Check the undertone
An undertone is the subtle underlying color within a gray. Benjamin Moore notes that light, décor, and surrounding colors can amplify or mute it. Its handbook identifies cool blue undertones becoming apparent in Stonington Gray HC-170 and Wickham Gray HC-171. If you want to avoid a gray looking blue or purple, do not rely on the name alone: test the candidate beside your actual white trim, flooring, counters, and upholstery.
2. Use LRV as a brightness clue
Sherwin-Williams defines Light Reflective Value (LRV) as how much light a paint reflects. Its guidance places a typical neutral bright-and-airy range around LRV 50–60. Treat that as a planning range, not a guarantee: the same gray can read differently depending on the room’s daylight and finishes.

3. Account for the room’s orientation
North-, south-, east-, and west-facing rooms receive different daylight, and Sherwin-Williams recommends considering orientation when evaluating neutrals. Compare the swatch where it will actually be painted rather than judging it only under a store’s lighting.
4. Compare against permanent finishes
Place samples near the floor, trim, counters, cabinetry, and major upholstery. As a practical design inference, a gray that appears neutral next to bright white may look warmer beside cream or wood, or cooler beside blue furnishings. The surrounding palette changes the visual balance even when the paint itself has not changed.

- WASHABLE FINISH: Each deeply nuanced shade offers durable and wipeable coverage. It is easy to clean walls without damaging the paint surface.
Sample before buying gallons
Digital images and printed color cards can differ from the finished paint. Use a large painted sample or sample pot, then view it in the actual room in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Move the sample to more than one wall if the room receives uneven light. This is the safest way to see whether the gray develops an unwanted blue, green, purple, or beige cast in your conditions.

A simple sampling checklist
- Write the full name and code on each sample, such as Classic Gray OC-23.
- Place samples beside existing trim and the largest nearby finishes.
- Inspect them under daylight and the room’s evening lights.
- Compare at least two or three candidates at the same time.
- Choose the color only after observing it through a full day.
Which light gray should you start with?
Start with the 12-code shortlist, then narrow it by the room’s light and surrounding materials. If a cool cast would be a problem, pay particular attention to how Stonington Gray HC-170 and Wickham Gray HC-171 behave in your space, since Benjamin Moore flags blue undertones in both. For every candidate—including Classic Gray OC-23—let the large in-room sample, not a screen or printed card, make the final decision.
