A practical homemade batting tee needs three parts: a stable base, an upright stem and a ball rest that holds the ball but yields when the bat hits it. A plywood base, floor flange, PVC pipe, rubber furniture-leg tip and flexible hose can produce an adjustable tee with ordinary tools. The dimensions below come from documented builds, so treat them as a starting design rather than a universal specification.
What a DIY batting tee must do
Before cutting material, design around four jobs:
- Stay planted: the base and flange must resist sliding and tipping.
- Reach the intended contact height: the stem or topper must adjust for the hitter and drill.
- Hold the ball consistently: the rest should support the ball without gripping it rigidly.
- Yield on contact: a flexible rest reduces the chance that an off-center swing breaks the tee or sends the base moving.
There is no generally required height, base weight or material standard for a homemade tee. Dimensions depend on the pipe, leg tip, hose and topper you actually choose.

Parts and tools for the PVC-and-hose design
Materials
- Plywood for the base
- A metal floor flange and a matching threaded PVC adapter
- PVC pipe for the upright stem
- A rubber furniture-leg tip large enough to accept the pipe and hose arrangement
- Flexible disposer hose or similar flexible tubing
- Wood screws
- PVC cement, if your selected PVC joints require it
- Optional batting weights or another removable weight for the base
Tools
- Drill and driver
- Saw for plywood and PVC
- A 1-1/8-inch bit for the rubber tip in the documented Make: design
- Measuring tape, marker and sandpaper
Dry-fit every connection before applying cement. A hose, rubber tip and pipe can have similar-looking nominal sizes but still fail to grip one another.
How to build the adjustable tee
- Make the base. Cut a plywood base large enough for the flange and the hitter’s normal contact area. Mark its center and drill pilot holes for the flange.
- Attach the flange. Center the floor flange on the plywood and fasten it with wood screws. Use enough fastener engagement for the thickness and condition of your board.
- Cut the stem. In the Make: example, the PVC stem is cut to 13 inches. That is a dimension for that design, not a universal tee height.
- Prepare the rubber tip. The same design uses a 1-1/8-inch hole through the rubber furniture-leg tip. Make the opening match your actual pipe and hose; do not assume the printed size of one component will fit another.
- Install the pipe and hose. Press the PVC into the rubber tip and feed the flexible hose through the tip. The hose should fit tightly enough to hold its adjusted position while still allowing you to move it for different heights.
- Join the stem to the base. Screw the stem’s threaded adapter into the floor flange. The stem can be unscrewed from the flange for transport in this style of build.
- Set the ball rest. Adjust the hose so the ball sits at the desired contact point. Check that the ball is supported without being wedged into the opening.
Make: project author Brad Huffman described an earlier 24-inch stem being struck and shattered by a good swing. He shortened a later version to 13 inches and reported that the lower profile was less exposed to errant swings. He also wrote that the disposer hose had enough give to help keep the tee from tipping. Those are his observations of that project, not controlled durability or stability tests.
Choosing and fitting the topper
Flexible hose
A hose is inexpensive, adjustable and easy to replace. Its opening and stiffness determine how securely it holds the ball. Trim only after testing the fit, because a hose that is too loose can drop the ball and one that is too tight can make contact inconsistent.

Purchased batting-tee topper
A commercial topper can be used instead of hose, but its opening must match the outside diameter and shape of your stem. A Baseball By The Yard coach-build discussion records a topper opening that did not fit the PVC selected for that build. Buy or cut the stem only after checking the topper’s actual dimensions.
Other improvised rests
Individual builders have reported using recycled tractor inner tubes or dishwasher hose as flexible rests. These are construction ideas, not tested specifications. Test the ball position and rebound before allowing a hitter to take full swings.
Making the base stable
Stability comes from footprint, material, fasteners and weight together. A heavier or wider base is not automatically safer if the flange is loose or the plywood is splitting.

- Use sound plywood and keep the flange centered.
- Drive screws fully without stripping the board.
- Place the tee on a level surface and check for rocking.
- Add removable weight when the tee moves during swings. Make: suggests slipping batting weights over the stem so they rest on the base; a Baseball By The Yard comment describes a ten-pound plate. Neither is an established required weight.
- Keep added weights clear of the hitter’s feet and secure enough that they cannot slide into the swing path.
Height and drill configurations
One advantage of building your own tee is that you can make more than one configuration. Coach McCreary’s description includes a standard tee and a low tee for low strike-zone work, plus drills performed from one knee or a chair. A removable threaded stem makes storage and swapping easier.
An older ERIC-hosted physical-education guide describes a plywood base with a centered 1.5- to 2-inch pole or dowel, 2 to 3 feet tall depending on the child’s size, and a hose secured with an adjustable clamp. It also lists a traffic cone or a cut-down Wiffle bat as improvised alternatives. The guide is from 1990, so treat those ideas as historical activity guidance rather than a current product standard.

Using the tee for practice
Inside/outside decision drill
Baseball By The Yard describes placing one ball for an inside location and another for an outside location. As the hitter begins to load, call one location and have the hitter react to that ball. Keep both tees far enough apart that the hitter can rotate without contacting the unused tee.

Placement relative to the plate
Orleans Baseball’s tee instruction places the tee slightly ahead of the plate in its described hitting setup and discusses using ball-seam visual cues. That is coaching guidance for that setup, not a universal placement rule. Adjust the position to the drill’s purpose and the hitter’s swing.

Build your own when you want a repairable project, a custom low or high position, or parts you can replace locally. Buy when you need predictable fit, quick setup or a manufacturer-supported replacement system.

Safety checks before every session
Homemade equipment has no implied certification. Before use:
- Check the plywood for splits, the flange for movement and every screw for looseness.
- Inspect the PVC, rubber tip and hose for cracks, cuts or deformation.
- Confirm that the stem and topper are seated and that the ball is held at the intended height.
- Keep children, pets and other players outside the swing path and behind the hitter.
- Stop using the tee if it rocks, tips, sheds fragments or changes height unexpectedly.
Start with controlled swings after assembly. Full-speed hitting should wait until the base, connections and ball rest remain stable through repeated contact.
When a homemade tee is the wrong choice
Skip the project if you cannot obtain a close fit between the stem and topper, cannot make a rigid flange connection, or need a tee that can be set up immediately without adjustment. A complete adjustable tee may be the simpler option when several players need repeatable settings and replacement parts.
