Pakistani truck art is not simply paint applied to a vehicle: poetry, calligraphy, devotional imagery and slogans are built into a moving public artwork. Its visual language also appears on buses, rickshaws, pushcarts and school walls, combining regional identity with the work of painters, welders, woodcarvers and metalworkers.
What do the poems on Pakistani trucks mean?
There is no single message shared by every decorated vehicle. Urdu and regional poetry sits alongside devotional formulas, slogans and calligraphy; the words help give a truck its identity rather than functioning as an afterthought. The surrounding images and ornament contribute to that identity too.
The Pulitzer Center describes motifs that include saints and landscapes, and reports that artist and University of Karachi professor Durriya Kazi connects the practice to a Sufi tradition of honoring shrines and sacred sites. Kazi captures the sense of reciprocity between vehicle and decoration: “The idea is, if we don’t honor the truck, it won’t give back to us.”
Literary references can be part of the visual vocabulary: the Pulitzer Center report notes motifs associated with Iqbal and other Urdu literary figures. But a particular line cannot be translated or attributed reliably without checking its Urdu text and a dependable edition. The available accounts establish that poetry is present, not a complete, verified corpus of verses or a universal key to their meaning.

Why are Pakistani trucks so colorful?
Color is one element in a dense, layered composition that can cover much more than the truck’s rear panel. Decoration may combine painted birds and landscapes with stamped or embossed metal, carved wooden prows, mirror inlay, lettering and chains with bells. The mix varies by vehicle and workshop; no single truck should be assumed to contain every technique.
The change to fuller coverage has a history. Dawn’s 2016 account describes an earlier convention, lasting until the late 1960s, in which spiritual and exotic images commonly appeared on rear panels. From the early 1970s, imagery and calligraphy spread across the body. Billboard painters, drawing on Pakistani film hoardings as well as Western psychedelic and Pop Art influences, helped shape the more expansive style.

That surface is the result of skilled, collaborative work, not anonymous decoration. Painters and calligraphers work alongside tradespeople such as welders, electricians, woodcarvers and metalworkers. Academic research presented by Aga Khan University describes the decorated vehicle as a layered symbolic structure assembled through such workshop practices, while also emphasizing that owners, drivers and artists can express changing religious, political and social identities through it.
Where did Pakistani truck art come from?
Accounts place the tradition before Pakistan’s independence, with the Associated Press describing roots in British colonial rule. The Pulitzer Center report also traces an artisan lineage after Partition: painters whose work had been associated with palaces and manor houses carried skills and motifs into Karachi’s truck industry. These accounts point to a developing craft with multiple influences, rather than one inventor or a single moment of origin.
The vehicle’s form and the work around it changed over time. Dawn’s 2016 history marks the shift from decorated rear panels to imagery and calligraphy across the body in the early 1970s. Today, the finished vehicle reflects the decisions of clients and a workshop team as well as the wider visual traditions from which its makers draw.
What is the difference between Pakistani truck-art styles?
Regional labels are useful, but they do not describe interchangeable templates or guarantee that every vehicle in a place looks alike. The Associated Press names Peshawar, Hazara, Swat, Pindi, Mandi Bahauddin and Karachi styles. Its account specifically characterizes Pindi work as especially flamboyant, with vivid colors, elaborate stickers, mirror work and dense layering. A driver quoted by AP, Farrukh Sana, compares the style to “a bride getting ready for her wedding.”

For other named styles, the available reporting does not establish a consistent set of visual traits to assign to each. Punjab University research offers a separate regional observation: Punjab truck-art motifs draw on local myth and bird imagery. That evidence should not be treated as a detailed profile of every AP-named style.
| Style or region | Documented visual information | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pindi | Described as flamboyant, with vivid colors, elaborate stickers, mirror work and dense layering. | Associated Press; a specific feature description in its account. |
| Punjab | Research emphasizes local myth and bird imagery; it does not specify a comparable palette or material set. | Punjab University research; regional motifs, not a profile of every named style. |
| Peshawar | Specific palette, materials and motifs: not stated in the cited Associated Press account. | Associated Press names the style. |
| Hazara | Specific palette, materials and motifs: not stated in the cited Associated Press account. | Associated Press names the style. |
| Swat | Specific palette, materials and motifs: not stated in the cited Associated Press account. | Associated Press names the style. |
| Mandi Bahauddin | Specific palette, materials and motifs: not stated in the cited Associated Press account. | Associated Press names the style. |
| Karachi | Specific palette, materials and motifs: not stated in the cited Associated Press account. | Associated Press names the style. |
To compare examples responsibly, look at palette and density, materials, imagery and lettering, and the workshop or transport context. Those are useful questions to ask of particular vehicles, not grounds to fill gaps with assumptions about a whole region.

Is truck art only on trucks?
No. The Pulitzer Center report lists buses, water tankers, transport vans, rickshaws and vendors’ pushcarts among the vehicles and working objects that share this visual language. The Associated Press also reports that truck-art traditions have entered household décor.
The movement to walls is literal as well. UNESCO documents a girls’ education project in Kohistan where local truck-art techniques were painted on classroom walls. The organization says the murals gave lessons a visual representation and encouraged more interactive, colorful learning. In a different shift from vehicle to object, Nadia Ahmed’s 2022 Auckland University of Technology thesis examines artisans’ transfer of traditional images and symbols to contemporary artefacts, including whether that transfer changes their meanings.
What does it cost to decorate a truck?
The Associated Press reported in 2025 that a full truck refurbishment could cost 2–5 million Pakistani rupees, approximately US$7,000–$17,790. The report says the amount depends on materials and on whether major components such as tires and the chassis are replaced, so it is not a fixed price for decoration alone.

The Pulitzer Center report gives a separate, qualified measure of the commitment: it describes a refurbishment as costing thousands of dollars, potentially equivalent to as much as a year’s profit for the vehicle owner. Its page does not display a publication year, and the figure should be read as contextual rather than as a current quote.

For a sustained cultural history, Jamal J. Elias’s On Wings of Diesel: Trucks, Identity and Culture in Pakistan examines what truck decoration reveals about the identities of owners, drivers and artists, as well as changing religious, political and social symbols. Aga Khan University describes the book as the product of seven years of research and notes that it received an American Institute of Pakistan Studies book prize.
