The WOOD Magazine Arts & Crafts table-lamp plan produces a lamp approximately 7 inches wide at the base and 14 inches high. Its shade is a half-lapped wooden framework that holds four amber-translucent mica panels; optional copper pine-cone onlays provide the decorative Arts & Crafts detail. The project first appeared in WOOD Issue 148 (May 2003). Get the full patterns and dimensions from the official WOOD Magazine plan before cutting stock.
What the finished lamp includes
The design combines a solid wood base with a four-sided, rabbeted shade frame. Repeated supports, rails and stiles are joined with streamlined half-laps. Each opening receives a mica panel, and the completed frame sits over the lamp’s electrical hardware. Full-size patterns cover the shaped shade supports and corbels.
- Approximate finished size: 7 inches wide at the base and 14 inches high, according to the current Woodcraft downloadable-plan listing: Woodcraft plan listing.
- Shade: four mica panels retained in rabbets with clear silicone caulk.
- Joinery: repeated half-lapped frame parts, with bevel-ripped stiles and a square clamped assembly.
- Decoration: optional copper pine-cone motifs made from 24-gauge copper and bonded with five-minute epoxy.
WOOD describes mica as nonflammable and says it resists temperatures up to 1,650°F; nevertheless, install only compatible lamp components and follow the electrical component instructions.
Materials and tools
Materials to buy
- Quartersawn oak, or another suitable stable hardwood, for the base, shade frame, supports and corbels.
- An 18×36-inch sheet of mica, enough to lay out and cut four panels, or a kit containing pre-cut panels.
- Clear silicone caulk for securing the mica in the frame rabbets.
- Optional 24-gauge copper, including the 4×14-inch piece specified for the pine-cone motifs.
- Five-minute epoxy for the copper onlays.
- Stain or another chosen wood finish.
- Lamp socket, cord and other electrical hardware; bulbs are not included in the project kit.

Build the wooden frame
1. Prepare and duplicate the parts
Select straight, stable stock and mill it to the dimensions in the plan. Make duplicate supports, rails, stiles and other repeated pieces together so their thickness and profile match. Quartersawn oak follows the documented example, but the plan can be adapted to another suitable hardwood.

Use the supplied patterns for the shade supports and corbels. Mark the grain direction, waste areas and reference faces before cutting. Bandsaw just outside the layout line, then sand to the pattern for accurate, repeatable curves.

3. Cut the half-lapped shade framework
Lay out the half-lap joints exactly as shown. Cut the mating recesses with the tablesaw or another controlled setup, test-fit every joint, and keep the visible faces oriented consistently. Bevel-rip the stiles as specified so the four-sided shade closes correctly.
4. Assemble the frame square
Dry-assemble the rails and stiles first. Check that the openings are equal and that the frame sits flat; then apply the specified glue, clamp the assembly and verify square by comparing diagonals. Correct alignment while the glue is workable.

Cut and install the mica panels
Layout and cutting
Lay the four panel shapes on an 18×36-inch mica sheet, following the plan’s orientation and allowances. Cut the panels carefully, then round or smooth the corners as directed so they seat without forcing the wooden frame.
Secure the panels
- Place each mica panel in its rabbet and confirm that it is supported without bowing.
- Apply a continuous bead of clear silicone caulk along the stiles and rails that retain the panel.
- Clean excess caulk while it is workable, without scratching the mica.
- Leave the lamp undisturbed overnight so the silicone cures before handling the shade.
Mica supplies the warm amber glow associated with this design and, according to WOOD, is nonflammable and rated to resist temperatures up to 1,650°F.

Add the optional copper pine-cone motifs
Transfer the pine-cone shapes to 24-gauge copper, cut and refine the pieces, then dry-position them on the wood. Bond them with five-minute epoxy and allow the adhesive to set before final sanding. The motifs are optional; omitting them leaves a simpler frame without changing the mica-panel construction.
Finish and wire the lamp
- Finish-sand the wood, easing exposed edges without changing the joinery or panel rabbets.
- Apply stain or another finish appropriate for the selected hardwood, keeping finish out of the mica retainers and electrical openings.
- Install the socket, cord and remaining hardware supplied by the kit or selected separately.
- Complete wiring according to the socket and cord manufacturer’s instructions, then inspect every connection before fitting a bulb.

Downloadable plan, paper plan or kit?
Choose the downloadable plan if you can print full-size patterns accurately and want immediate access. Choose the paper plan if you prefer a physical reference in the shop. A kit is useful when you want the four mica panels and electrical hardware prepared for you, while a self-sourced build gives you control over lumber selection, socket style and cord length. In every route, obtain the plan itself for the dimensions and patterns; listings for the downloadable and paper versions are separate products.
