Fall leaves can become immediate prints and collages or carefully preserved botanical art. Start with clean, dry leaves collected legally, then choose a project based on whether you want finished work today (rubbings, painted prints, leaf-and-acorn designs) or are willing to press specimens for days or weeks (cards, bookmarks, framed art, herbarium sheets and scrapbooks).
Choose a project by time, mess and finished use
| Project | Preparation | Materials and skill | Best finished use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leaf-and-acorn collage | Immediate | Leaves, acorns, paper, glue, crayons or markers; easy | Faces, animals and children’s wall art |
| Crayon or foil rubbing | Immediate | Paper and crayon, or aluminum foil; easy | Pattern studies and cards |
| Painted leaf print | Immediate | Watercolor or washable tempera, paper or fabric; moderate control | Cards, paintings, T-shirts, aprons and tote bags |
| Pressed card, bookmark or notebook | Days to weeks | Pressed leaves, paper, tweezers, PVA or white glue, labels and weights | Stationery and keepsakes |
| Framed botanical or herbarium sheet | Days to weeks | Pressed, labeled specimens and archival paper; careful handling | Long-term display and plant records |
| Seasonal scrapbook or “magic garden” | Two to four weeks of pressing for the Met activity | Pressed leaves, paper, glue and drawing tools | Storytelling, collages and seasonal albums |
Flat, relatively thin leaves press most reliably. Maple and oak are especially attractive in fall color, according to the University of Florida’s plant-craft guidance (University of Florida Gardening Solutions; UF/IFAS publication EP004).
Make immediate art with fresh fall leaves
Leaf-and-acorn animals or faces
- Collect colorful leaves and acorns from a place where you have permission.
- Arrange them on paper as a face, animal or abstract figure before gluing.
- Use white glue to secure each piece, then add eyes, whiskers, clothing or scenery with crayon or marker.
The Georgia Museum of Art’s activity demonstrates this approach with leaves and acorns (Georgia Museum of Art leaf collage). Let the glue dry flat so curled leaves do not lift.

Vein-forward crayon and foil rubbings
- Place a leaf beneath paper with its more strongly veined underside facing up.
- Hold the leaf still and rub the side of a crayon across the paper to reveal the veins.
- For a reflective variation, place the leaf under aluminum foil and gently rub the foil with a finger, as described by Washington State University Extension.
Use several leaf shapes on one sheet to compare venation, margins and silhouettes. The illustrated directions are in the Washington State activity PDF (Washington State University Extension, Autumn Leaf Exploration).
Painted leaf prints on paper or fabric
- Brush watercolor or washable tempera onto the veined underside of a leaf.
- Test the paint load on scrap paper; too much paint fills the veins, while too little produces gaps.
- Place the painted side onto paper or fabric and press evenly without sliding.
- Lift the leaf straight up and allow the print to dry before adding another color or outline.
Penn State notes that these prints can decorate T-shirts, aprons and tote bags as well as paper (Penn State Extension leaf printing). Protect a work surface and follow the paint manufacturer’s fabric-setting instructions when applicable.

Press leaves for durable paper and display projects
Build a simple press
- Two rigid boards or sturdy books
- Absorbent newspaper or plain paper
- Cardboard sheets to separate layers
- Straps, clamps or rubber bands, with additional books for even weight
Use absorbent interleaving paper rather than glossy sheets. Smithsonian Botany’s home pressed-plant program also lists paper, white glue, tweezers, labels, tape and weights for mounting work (Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History pressed-plant projects).

Pressing workflow
- Collect responsibly. Collect only where permitted, avoid unknown or hazardous plants, and keep leaves dry before they enter the press. The University of New Hampshire Extension and The Met both emphasize safe, permitted collection (UNH Extension plant press activity; The Met’s Magic Garden activity).
- Arrange and sandwich. Flatten each leaf between absorbent paper, place the packet between cardboard or book pages, and distribute weight evenly.
- Wait and check. UNH advises checking after at least two weeks. The Met’s activity presses leaves for two to four weeks; the Natural History Museum says drying can take days to weeks, depending on the plant and conditions (Natural History Museum pressing guidance).
- Mount only when fully dry. Handle brittle specimens with tweezers or clean, dry fingers. Apply a thin coat of PVA or white glue to the back and position it on the final paper.
The Natural History Museum specifically warns: “Don’t use sticky tape to attach your flower to card. It discolours things and easily falls off the card, but not the specimen. Glue is much better, particularly PVA.”
Pressed cards, bookmarks and notebooks
Compose a border, single specimen or layered botanical design on heavy paper. Add a small label with the plant name if known, collection location and date. Smithsonian’s instructions support using pressed plants for greeting cards, bookmarks and preserved notebooks; tweezers help position fragile pieces.

Framed botanical art and herbarium sheets
For a scientific-looking sheet, mount one or more leaves on archival paper and write the plant name (if known), place and date beneath it. For display art, leave generous space around the specimen and use a frame or clear protective covering. Store finished pieces flat or behind glass to reduce handling and humidity exposure.
