The most dependable beginner setup for marking bare metal is a 1064 nm fiber or infrared laser. It can mark stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, titanium and precious metals directly. CO2 and blue-diode lasers are better choices for anodized or coated metal; bare metal usually needs a compatible marking spray or compound to create visible contrast. A 5 W infrared module can mark or engrave a surface, but it cannot cut through metal.

Decide what “engraving” should look like

Laser work on metal can produce several different results. Choose the machine and recipe for the result you actually need.

  • Surface mark: a dark or light contrast change with little measurable depth.
  • Annealing or color change: the laser alters the metal’s oxide layer without removing substantial material.
  • Coating removal: the laser strips paint, anodizing or another finish to reveal the layer underneath.
  • Deep engraving: repeated passes remove metal and leave a tactile recess. This requires more energy, careful heat control and usually a more capable fiber system.
  • Spray-assisted marking: a CO2 or diode laser fuses a prepared marking compound to the surface. The visible image comes from the compound, not from directly ablating bare metal.

These outcomes are not interchangeable. A recipe that creates a black annealed mark may be unsuitable when you need a deep, abrasion-resistant recess, and a spray recipe will not prove that a blue diode can mark untreated steel.

Which laser is right for a beginner?

Laser type Typical wavelength Best beginner uses Limits and preparation
Fiber or infrared About 1064 nm Direct marking, annealing, coating removal and engraving of bare stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, titanium alloys and precious metals A 5 W infrared source can engrave or mark but does not cut metal. Higher power and suitable optics are needed for deeper or faster work.
CO2 Commonly 10.6 µm Nonmetals plus anodized aluminum and other coated metals Bare metal generally requires a metal-marking solution. Even surfaces that do not look mirror-like can reflect 10.6 µm infrared radiation.
Blue diode Visible blue diode wavelength varies by model Wood, acrylic, leather and coated or anodized metal Bare metal normally needs a marking spray or another compatible coating. Follow the exact model’s material table rather than a generic diode chart.

If your first projects are stainless tumblers, uncoated tags or aluminum parts, a 1064 nm fiber/infrared machine avoids the extra coating step. If you already own a CO2 or blue diode, spray-assisted marking can be practical for suitable parts, but it is a different process with its own cleanup and ventilation requirements.

Prepare the material before you select settings

Identify alloy, finish and geometry

Record the alloy or grade (such as 304 stainless), thickness, polish, brushing, anodizing, paint or plating. The same nominal metal can react differently after polishing, heat treatment or coating. Curved parts also change their distance from the lens, so a rotary attachment or a purpose-built jig may be necessary.

Use the machine’s documentation first

Read the laser manual, material tables and the safety data sheet (SDS) for any coating or spray. Manufacturer settings and rotary-attachment instructions take precedence over internet charts because lens, spot size, firmware, optics and motion system differ between machines.

Clean and fixture the workpiece

Remove oil, fingerprints and polishing residue with a suitable cleaner, then let the surface dry. Clamp or jig the part so it cannot move during a job. Confirm that a rotary attachment is compatible with your exact machine before mounting a cylindrical item.

Apply marking spray correctly

For a spray workflow, apply a thin, even coat in a ventilated area. xTool’s procedure allows the coating to dry naturally for roughly 3–5 minutes before processing. Excessively thick or uneven coating causes patchy color and blurred edges, while an under-coated area may remain bare.

A repeatable beginner workflow

  1. Define the target: choose surface contrast, annealing, coating removal or depth, and note how much handling the finished item must withstand.
  2. Document the substrate: write down alloy or grade, finish, thickness and whether a spray or other coating is present.
  3. Set focus: use the machine’s prescribed focus method. Recheck focus when changing lens, fixture height or part curvature.
  4. Secure the part: clamp it or use a jig; verify rotary alignment for cylindrical objects.
  5. Run a test matrix: use scrap from the same batch whenever possible. Test speed and power first, then frequency if available. Refine line interval, focus offset and pass count after you identify a promising range.
  6. Record the winning recipe: save speed, power, frequency, line interval, passes, focus offset, air-assist state, lens and material finish, along with a photo of the test.
  7. Process the production piece: keep the enclosure closed and monitor the first job without bypassing interlocks.
  8. Clean the result: after spray marking, rinse or wipe away residue as directed by the product instructions. xTool describes water or a damp sponge, with localized alcohol cleaning where appropriate.
  9. Inspect durability: check contrast, edge sharpness, adhesion and resistance to the intended handling before selling, gifting or installing the part.

How to build settings that transfer reliably

There is no universal “best setting” for stainless steel or any other metal. Published values are machine-specific, and different sprays and substrates require their own tests. Treat a settings chart as a starting range, not a guarantee.

Use a controlled test grid

  • Use a matrix of speed and power on matching scrap.
  • Change one variable at a time where practical so you can identify why contrast or depth changed.
  • Once speed and power are close, test frequency, line interval, focus offset and number of passes.
  • Keep air-assist conditions consistent and note them in the log.
  • Photograph each cell and label it with the complete recipe.

Look for even fill, clean edges, the required contrast and acceptable heat tint. A darker mark is not automatically stronger; excessive energy can widen lines, warp thin stock or create unwanted discoloration. For deep work, increase depth gradually with additional passes rather than assuming one high-power pass is safer.

Safety is an engineering problem, not an accessory

Control the beam

Use a certified enclosed, Class 1-style system whenever practical. Professional open systems may be Class IIIb or Class IV, which present substantially greater exposure hazards. FDA labeling identifies a system’s output and hazard class; do not remove or obscure those labels.

Protective housing, door interlocks, physical barriers and controlled access are primary engineering controls. Never defeat an interlock to make alignment or production faster. Train every operator and keep untrained people, children and pets outside the controlled area.

Choose eyewear for the exact laser

“Laser glasses” without a wavelength and optical-density specification are not adequate. Select eyewear rated for the exact wavelength—such as 1064 nm or 10.6 µm—the machine’s output and the worst credible exposure. Infrared reflections can be hazardous even when the beam is invisible, and a surface that looks dull may still reflect the operating wavelength.

Ventilate and manage fumes

Use local exhaust or the manufacturer-approved ventilation system. Follow the SDS for marking sprays, paints and other coatings, and keep exhaust from entering occupied areas. Do not rely on smell as a warning; hazardous decomposition products may be invisible.

Reject materials you cannot verify

Never process PVC or vinyl, unknown plastics or composites, or any material whose composition and SDS you cannot confirm. Epilog specifically warns about hydrogen chloride, vinyl chloride, halogens, chromium-containing artificial leather, epoxy and phenolic resins. These materials can release corrosive or toxic gases and damage the machine.

Common beginner problems and fixes

The mark is faint or missing

Check focus, surface cleaning, coating coverage and whether the laser type matches the substrate. Bare metal on a diode or CO2 machine generally needs a compatible marking compound; increasing power alone will not make an incompatible wavelength behave like a fiber laser.

The result is blotchy

Uneven spray thickness, fingerprints, inconsistent focus or movement during the job are usual causes. Reclean the part, apply a thin uniform coat, secure the fixture and rerun a small grid.

Edges are wide or the part is heat-damaged

Reduce energy per unit area by adjusting speed, power, line interval or passes, and verify focus. Thin stock may require lower heat input and more controlled passes.

A cylindrical design is distorted

Confirm rotary compatibility, center the part and use the manufacturer’s rotary setup instructions. Recheck focus across the usable circumference before running the final piece.
