Scrap Attack Throw is a free American Patchwork & Quilting project hosted by AllPeopleQuilt. It finishes at 48½ × 63½ inches, with a white background, assorted dark or medium prints, 25 pieced blocks, and a large run of two-inch triangle-squares. The pattern is approachable in technique but substantial in quantity: you will make 720 triangle-squares, use 716 of them, and then build several border units.

Scrap Attack Throw at a glance

Specification Pattern detail
Finished quilt size 48½ × 63½ inches
Finished block size 6 × 9 inches
Quilt center before borders 30½ × 45½ inches
Bordered center before finishing 42½ × 57½ inches
Block layout 25 blocks arranged in five rows
Triangle-squares 720 made; 716 used
Background Solid white
Prints Assorted dark or medium prints

The project description says that scraps of all colors and sizes can find a home in a quilt of squares and triangle-squares. The sample uses the Forest Fancies collection by P&B Textiles, but that collection is an example rather than a requirement.

Fabric, batting and binding requirements

The official yardages assume 42 inches of usable fabric width. For the stated 57 × 72-inch batting requirement, search for quilt batting sold at or above that size.

Material Amount Use or qualification
Solid white fabric 2¼ yards Background squares and border components
Assorted dark or medium prints 3½ yards total Scrappy blocks, triangle-squares and pieced outer border
Binding fabric ½ yard Six strips cut 2½ × 42 inches
Backing fabric 3¼ yards For a 42-inch usable width
Batting 57 × 72 inches Allows coverage beyond the finished top for quilting and trimming

Cutting checklist

  • 90 five-inch solid-white squares
  • 104 two-inch solid-white squares
  • 90 five-inch print squares
  • 244 two-inch print squares
  • Print segments cut 3½ inches wide, totaling 230 inches
  • Six binding strips, each 2½ × 42 inches

Because the design is intentionally scrappy, sort prints by value before sewing. Keeping dark and medium fabrics distinct from the white background preserves the triangle pattern even when the prints vary widely in color and scale.

How to make the triangle-squares

The triangle-squares are made from paired five-inch squares and trimmed to a two-inch finished unit. Accurate quarter-inch seams and consistent trimming matter more than matching every print.

  1. On the wrong side of each five-inch white square, mark two diagonal lines from corner to corner.
  2. Place a marked white square right sides together with a five-inch print square.
  3. Sew a quarter-inch from both sides of each marked diagonal.
  4. Cut along the marked diagonals to separate the smaller units.
  5. Open the triangles and press the seams as directed by your preferred pressing method.
  6. Trim the resulting triangle-squares to the required two-inch size.
  7. Repeat until you have 720 triangle-squares. The quilt uses 716; the four-unit difference provides the pattern’s stated allowance.

Assembling the 25 blocks

Each block combines eight assorted two-inch print squares with 16 triangle-squares. Make all 25 blocks before laying out the quilt so you can distribute similar colors and values rather than allowing one area to become noticeably heavier.

  1. Arrange eight print squares and 16 triangle-squares according to the block diagram.
  2. Sew the units into rows, matching points and maintaining a consistent quarter-inch seam.
  3. Join the rows to complete a block that finishes at 6 × 9 inches.
  4. Make 25 blocks in total.
  5. Lay the blocks in five rows. Rotate alternate blocks as shown in the pattern so adjoining seams nest.
  6. Join the blocks into rows, pressing alternating row seams to reduce bulk when the rows are joined.
  7. Assemble the five rows. The quilt center should measure 30½ × 45½ inches before borders.

Building the borders

After the block center is assembled, the pattern adds border components identified as Units A through E, followed by inner border strips and a pieced outer border made from the 3½-inch-wide print segments.

Border sequence

  1. Construct Units A through E from the specified white and print pieces.
  2. Attach the inner border strips to the quilt center, checking the measurement after each addition.
  3. Assemble the pieced outer border from the 3½-inch-wide print segments.
  4. Add the outer border, matching corners and distributing the scrappy prints around all four sides.

With the borders attached, the quilt top reaches 42½ × 57½ inches before batting, backing and quilting are added.

Quilting and finishing

  1. Layer the completed top, batting and backing.
  2. Baste the layers using the method appropriate for your machine or frame.
  3. Quilt as desired, leaving enough margin to trim the edges square.
  4. Trim the quilted layers and bind with the six 2½-inch binding strips.

The published sample was machine-quilted by Kristina Whitney, a Handi Quilter studio educator, using the Damask e2e design by Nancy Haacke. Whitney selected the curved design to contrast with the hard edges of the triangle-squares and used light yellow thread with two layers of batting. Those choices are sample details, not requirements for making the quilt.

How difficult is Scrap Attack Throw?

No formal difficulty rating or completion-time estimate is published. In practical terms, the individual operations are familiar to a confident beginner—marking, chain-piecing, trimming half-square-style units, sewing rows and adding borders—but the project demands sustained accuracy and patience because of the 720 triangle-squares, 25 blocks and multi-stage border construction.

Likely pressure points

  • Point accuracy: Triangle-squares must be trimmed consistently or the block rows will drift.
  • Quantity: Batch-sew and trim the units in stages instead of treating all 720 as one uninterrupted task.
  • Value balance: Photograph or lay out prints before sewing to keep the white background readable.
  • Border measurements: Measure the center before cutting or attaching each border so fullness is not pushed into the outer edge.

Choosing scraps and planning the look

The pattern controls the background but leaves the print field open. Dark and medium prints create the strongest contrast with white; mixing scale and color gives the intended scrappy effect. If you prefer a calmer appearance, limit the prints to a narrower color family while retaining enough value variation to distinguish adjacent triangle-squares.

Forest Fancies by P&B Textiles is the collection shown in the sample. Substituting a different collection or using accumulated scraps changes the mood without changing the cutting plan, provided the required white background and print quantities are maintained.
