An old bird cage can become a hanging planter, a compact trellis, or a tabletop garden feature. The most practical conversion is to place removable nursery pots inside it; a coir- or moss-lined cage creates a more permanent basket, while a cage on a stand can support climbers without trapping the root container. Choose the display position, drainage method, and plant habit before you add soil, then reinforce the support for the much heavier watered load.
Choose the right bird-cage garden project
Start by deciding how you want to use the cage and how often you need to service the plants. Oklahoma State University Extension identifies a bird cage as a suitable garden container when it can hold several inches of potting soil and has drainage holes.
| Project | Position | Water and soil arrangement | Best advantage | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Removable-pot display | Hanging, tabletop, or on a stand | One large or several small nursery pots inside the cage | Pots lift out for watering, pruning, frost protection, and seasonal changes | The cage and hanger still need to carry the combined watered weight |
| Lined hanging planter | Hanging or elevated | Coir, jute, burlap, compressed fiber, or sustainably sourced moss holds a peat-free container mix | Creates a unified basket that can be planted through the sides | Requires careful drainage and is harder to refresh once planted |
| Cage trellis | Ground-level pot or stable stand | Root container remains separate; a climber or trailer is trained through the bars | Provides vertical structure while keeping the root zone easy to reach | Vines need guiding and occasional pruning |
| Tabletop or memorial feature | Stable table, shelf, or plinth | Potted plants or succulents inside the cage | Easy to move and useful where hanging is unsafe | Do not use open flames; choose battery lighting for decoration |
Prepare and paint the cage before planting
- Inspect the structure. Remove loose hooks, sharp wire ends, unstable doors, and flaking rust. A decorative cage is not automatically strong enough to hang after it is filled.
- Clean it. Brush away dirt and corrosion, then wash and let the metal dry completely.
- Use an exterior-compatible finish. If you paint the cage, choose a coating labeled for the metal and outdoor exposure, and follow its surface-preparation and curing directions. Keep the finish away from the planting medium until it has fully cured.
- Check drainage. Water must be able to leave the container. If a liner or partial plastic barrier blocks the base, make drainage holes before adding soil.
Three dependable ways to turn a cage into a planter
1. Insert removable nursery pots
This is the lowest-risk build. Put one large pot in the center or arrange several smaller pots so air can circulate around them. The cage supplies the visual frame while each pot retains its own soil and drainage. Lift pots out to water thoroughly, rotate them for even growth, move them indoors during frost, or replace a tired seasonal display.

Wire sides do not hold potting media by themselves. As Illinois Extension explains, “With wire, you need to first line the container with something to keep the soil from falling out.” Fit coconut coir, jute, burlap, compressed fiber, or sustainably sourced moss tightly against the wire; Iowa State Extension lists these as common liner materials.

Use a peat-free, well-drained multipurpose compost or soilless container mix rather than garden soil. Leave a small lip below the liner’s rim so water does not run straight over the edge. Iowa State Extension emphasizes that all hanging baskets need good drainage. A fully sealed liner can leave roots waterlogged, so any moisture barrier must have openings at the bottom.
3. Use the cage as a trellis
Keep a conventional pot on the ground or on a stable stand and guide a climber or trailing plant through the bars. This approach gives you the height and shape of a cage without permanently filling its interior. It is especially useful when the cage has a fragile base or when you want to change the plant without rebuilding the display.

Planting designs that look intentional
Use the thriller-filler-spiller pattern
For a mixed display, place an upright or architectural “thriller” in the center, fuller “filler” plants around it, and trailing “spiller” plants at the edge. Keep the root balls at their original planting depth and leave enough space for watering.

In a lined wire cage, cut small, spaced openings in the liner and gently thread selected plants through them, as Illinois Extension describes for wire baskets. Work from the lower openings upward so stems are not crushed while you add the remaining media. Side planting produces a rounded cascade, but it also makes watering and replacing individual plants more difficult.

Match plants to light and climate
Read the site for several hours before choosing plants. Shade-tolerant plants can decline in hot, full sun, while sun lovers often bloom poorly in deep shade. NC State Extension highlights lantana, verbena, and trailing petunias as attractive cascading choices; availability varies by locality and season. For a low-maintenance display, use plants with similar light and watering needs rather than combining a drought-tolerant succulent with moisture-loving annuals.
How to assemble a lined cage planter
- Measure the interior. Confirm that the cage can accommodate the liner, root space, and a little headroom for watering.
- Fit the liner. Press coir, jute, burlap, fiber, or moss against the sides and base. Trim only after the material sits securely.
- Create drainage. Ensure the base has an open path for excess water. Punch holes through any partial moisture barrier.
- Add container mix. Fill with a peat-free, well-drained soilless mix, stopping slightly below the rim.
- Set the central plant. Install the tallest or most architectural plant first.
- Add fillers and trailers. Space plants so mature growth will meet without immediately crowding the cage.
- Water slowly. Moisten the entire root zone until excess drains, then allow the surface to dry according to the plants’ needs.
Hang it safely
A watered cage is far heavier than an empty one. Use strong chain, rope, or wire, or a rated plant-hanger bracket attached to sound wood or masonry. UF/IFAS guidance stresses the need for strong support, and Illinois Extension advises securing hanging items and considering surrounding safety risks.

- Test the hook, chain, and attachment point before planting.
- Hang the cage where a failed support would not strike a path, seat, window, or children’s play area.
- After heavy rain, inspect the attachment and the cage for twisting or pulled joints.
- If the cage wobbles, has brittle metal, or has a questionable ceiling or branch attachment, use a tabletop or ground-level stand instead.
Watering and seasonal maintenance
Removable pots
Lift each pot when possible and water it over a sink, bucket, or suitable outdoor surface. Return it only after excess water has drained. This prevents trapped water from pooling inside the cage and makes seasonal replacement straightforward.

Lined baskets
Check the liner and drainage openings regularly. Coir and other porous liners dry faster than enclosed pots, while dense foliage can hide a dry center. Water at the soil surface until drainage begins, and adjust the schedule to the weather, plant size, and exposure rather than using a fixed calendar.

All cage displays
- Prune trailers before they hide the cage or overload the support.
- Remove dead leaves and flowers so they do not mat against the liner.
- Inspect fasteners, hooks, doors, and wire for rust or movement.
- Move removable pots to protection when local frost or extreme heat threatens them.
- Refresh tired annuals without discarding the cage itself.
Decorative variations beyond flowers
A cage can frame a collection of small succulents, foliage plants, or weather-resistant objects on a stable tabletop. For a memorial or evening feature, use battery lighting rather than candles or other open flames. Keep decorative additions light enough that they do not distort the cage or compromise its support.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Need easy watering and seasonal changes? Choose removable nursery pots.
- Want a full, basket-like cascade? Choose a properly drained coir, jute, burlap, fiber, or moss liner.
- Have a weak base or uncertain hanger? Use the cage as a trellis around a ground-level pot or place it on a stable stand.
- Unsure about plant selection? Match every plant to the site’s light and combine only plants with similar moisture needs.
- Unsure about the support? Do not hang it; a watered planter should never be tested over people or valuable property.
