GitHub turned its flat Octocat mascot into a three-dimensional vinyl desk collectible in October 2014. The difficult part was not simply enlarging an illustration: designers had to decide where the cat ended, where the octopus began, how many limbs the character should have, and how a large head could stand securely while remaining instantly recognizable from the front.
Why GitHub made a figurine
Octocat had already appeared in illustrations inspired by human culture and pop culture. A physical figure was the next way to put the mascot on users’ desks, but GitHub’s design team had no previous experience developing a vinyl figurine. The project therefore treated the mascot as both a character-design problem and a manufacturing problem.
The 5-inch vinyl figurine was announced on October 21, 2014. Tony Jaramillo’s design account, published November 24, 2014 and updated June 24, 2021, describes it as GitHub’s move into the mascot’s “third dimension.”

Designing a face that still read as Octocat
The team began with Octocat’s profile and tested the boundary between feline and cephalopod. In a flat drawing, that ambiguity can be suggested with a few lines; a sculpted head makes every transition visible.

Eyes carry the expression
Designers gave the eyes particular emphasis because they communicate the character’s emotion and personality. They extended the nose and mouth enough to imply a cat-like snout without turning the face into an ordinary cat.
Silhouette-defining details stayed
The ears and whiskers were retained because they identify Octocat even at a glance or from a distance. At the same time, the smooth, tentacle-like epidermis was continued upward from the limbs and over the head, preserving the octopus side of the hybrid.
Why the figurine has five tentacles
The two-dimensional mascot did not require a definitive limb count. Three dimensions did. The team considered an eight-tentacle octopus arrangement and a cat-like four legs-plus-tail interpretation, then chose five tentacles because eight felt inauthentic to this character while five preserved Octocat’s intended identity.

The five limbs form a pentagonal base. That geometry does practical work: the elastic tentacles distribute and absorb the weight of the oversized head, while their arrangement produces a fuller, rounder and more organic silhouette. The front view was kept close to the original illustration because recognition mattered more than anatomical realism.
| Design question | Decision | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Cat or octopus facial balance | Expressive eyes, a slight snout, ears and whiskers, plus smooth cephalopod skin | Preserve both halves of the hybrid without losing Octocat’s expression |
| Number of limbs | Five tentacles | Eight felt inauthentic; five retained the character’s identity |
| How the figure stands | Pentagonal tentacle arrangement | Support the large head and create an organic base |
| View prioritized during sculpting | Front view close to the original art | Make the mascot recognizable immediately |
From digital design to a physical sample
Once the overall design was set, GitHub received initial physical samples. The team made a series of small adjustments before approving production. This sample-and-revise stage matters for vinyl: proportions that look balanced on a screen can feel too heavy, too thin or unstable when molded as a freestanding object.
The documented process does not provide a full mold specification, paint formula or manufacturing schedule. What it does establish is an iterative workflow in which the digital character was checked as an actual object and refined before release.

Packaging: several ideas, then a deliberately simple box
Packaging concepts included designs based on shipping containers and a box shaped like an Octocat head. The final package was intentionally simple rather than turning the container into another elaborate character piece. That choice kept attention on the figure and avoided making the packaging more complicated than the collectible it protected.

GitHub’s account gives “all the amazing people at Dead Zebra” credit for helping along the way. That is the clearest production attribution in the published design story: GitHub developed the character and figurine direction, while Dead Zebra assisted with bringing the object to production. The record does not name a separate sculptor, factory or individual maker.

This was merchandise designed to put GitHub’s mascot on desks, extending Octocat from stickers and illustrations into a collectible object. The goal was not anatomical realism. Every major physical choice—five limbs, the pentagonal stance, the preserved front silhouette and the expressive face—served immediate character recognition.

What happened after the first release?
GitHub later announced a 3-inch Octocat figurine on November 10, 2015. That later announcement confirms that the character continued as physical merchandise, but it does not by itself establish that the smaller figure used identical materials, packaging or proportions to the 5-inch release.
In GitHub’s current Brand Toolkit, Mona is described as the company’s official mascot. The toolkit identifies the “Octocat 2.0” style as the current model used internally in illustrations, animations and stickers, and says mascots can appear in merchandise, events and community contexts. That guidance explains why Octocat products can evolve while still belonging to the same recognizable character system.

The documented design material does not establish a current price, inventory level, authorized retailer list or seller-authenticity test. Those details change over time and require a live check of GitHub’s official merchandise outlets. Treat listings for a “GitHub Octocat” as unverified unless the seller can demonstrate official GitHub provenance; a similar-looking cat-and-tentacle figure is not necessarily the 2014 vinyl release.
