For opaque paint, mix red into white: start with a pool of white, add a tiny amount of red, and blend thoroughly before adding more. Cool reds such as quinacridone red, quinacridone rose, magenta, and permanent rose produce cleaner or brighter pinks; warm cadmium reds shift toward peach, coral, or salmon. In watercolor, dilute a cool red or magenta with water and let white paper provide the light value.
The basic pink paint recipe
Pink is a tint of red—essentially red made lighter by adding white. Trycolors Team describes it succinctly as “Pink is what happens when you add white to red” (updated March 2026).
- Place a pool of white paint on your palette.
- Add a very small amount of red. Red pigment is usually much stronger than white.
- Mix completely, then continue adding red in tiny increments until the color reaches the value and strength you need.
- Brush a swatch onto the same surface you will paint. With acrylic or oil, let the swatch dry before judging it because the wet mixture can differ from the dried color.
There is no universal red-to-white ratio. Pigment concentration, brand, medium, and the particular red all change the result, so incremental additions and a recorded swatch are more reliable than a fixed measurement.
Choose the red for the pink you want

The temperature of the red matters because warm reds contain a yellow bias, while cool reds and magentas lean toward blue. If a mixture looks too orange, switch to a cooler red rather than trying to correct it with large amounts of another color.

Adjust the shade and intensity
Blush or baby pink
In acrylic, oil, or gouache, add more white to the pink mixture. In watercolor, add more water and apply a lighter wash; clean white paper supplies the lightest value.
Coral or peach pink
Begin with a warm red. If it needs to be warmer still, add an extremely small amount of yellow and mix completely before deciding whether more is needed. Yellow can dominate quickly.

Hot pink or fuchsia
Start with quinacridone magenta, quinacridone red, or permanent rose. Add only a little titanium white so the mixture stays high-chroma rather than becoming a pale pastel. The cool, strong pigment does most of the color work.
Dusty or muted pink
Neutralize the pink with a minute amount of complementary green or a suitable earth color. Add the neutralizer in tiny increments: too much can turn the mixture gray or brown. Mix each addition fully before adding more.

How watercolor pink differs from opaque paint
Watercolor normally makes pink by dilution, not by mixing in white paint. Load a brush with a cool red or magenta, then add water on the palette or paper to create lighter washes. Paint on clean white paper so the paper reflects through the transparent layer.
- More water: lighter, softer pink.
- Less water: deeper, more saturated pink.
- White watercolor or opaque white: can make a chalkier, less transparent mixture, so reserve it for effects that specifically require opacity.

Acrylic
Acrylic can dry lighter or otherwise different from its wet appearance. Test a small swatch, allow it to dry, and adjust the next mix rather than repainting an entire area.

Oil
Oil mixtures can also change as they dry. Keep a wet sample or written note of the pigments used, and evaluate the dried test under the lighting in which the work will be viewed.
Gouache
Gouache is opaque, so use the red-plus-white method. Add white gradually; a large amount of white lowers saturation quickly.

Watercolor
Use dilution and the paper’s white for transparent pink. Work in layers if you need a deeper value, allowing each wash to settle before adding another.

- The pink is too orange: remake it with a cooler red or magenta; a warm cadmium red naturally pushes toward coral.
- The pink is too pale: add a trace of the original red to an opaque mixture, or reduce the water in a watercolor wash.
- The hot pink looks chalky: reduce the titanium white and use a higher-chroma cool pigment.
- The color turned brown or gray: too much complementary green or earth color was added. Start a fresh batch and neutralize more cautiously.
- The dried paint is not the expected color: rely on a dry swatch for acrylic and oil decisions, not the wet palette mixture.
Making a repeatable pink
Once the color is right, paint a labeled swatch and record the pigments, brand, medium, and approximate additions. For watercolor, note the number of brush loads and water level; for opaque paint, note the order of additions and relative amounts. This record is more dependable than a universal formula because pigment strength varies between products.
