To print a poster larger than one sheet, create one finished image or PDF, divide it into a grid of tiles, print each tile at Actual Size or 100%, then trim and join the labeled pages. Adobe Acrobat can tile an existing PDF; Rasterbator.io can plan a tiled poster from an image or target finished size.
What tiled printing does
Tiled printing turns one complete poster into several ordinary sheets. Each sheet is a tile of the final image, not a separate design. The finished dimensions and the paper dimensions are separate choices: your grid changes with paper size, orientation, printer margins and the target poster size.
This method works for questions such as “How do I print a poster on multiple pages?” or “Can I print a 24×36 poster on multiple pages?” Yes—provided the artwork is divided into a measured grid and every tile is printed without automatic scaling.

| Workflow | Best when | What you control | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat | Your finished artwork is already a PDF | Tile Scale, Overlap, Cut marks and Labels, with a live page preview | You must configure the print dialog and printer paper to match the PDF |
| Rasterbator.io | You are starting with an image or need a planned sheet count or finished size | Paper size, orientation, margins, sheet count or exact finished dimensions, plus previews and an assembly guide | The generated PDF still has to be printed at its intended scale |
| Photo-service output | You want individual photo-sized prints rather than home-printed sheets | The service’s paper and finishing options | Lab cropping and trimming tolerances can change the edges; a small, consistent framed gap is more forgiving than a dimension-critical seamless join |
Prepare the artwork and physical plan
Start with one complete design
Finish the poster as a single image or PDF before tiling. Keeping the whole composition intact prevents mismatched type, colors or alignment between sheets. If you need the entire image visible, choose a no-crop or equivalent option. A fill option is appropriate only when intentional cropping is acceptable.

Choose the paper you actually have
Select the real sheet size—such as A4, Letter or A3—along with portrait or landscape orientation. Decide whether you are targeting a specific finished poster size or a specific number of sheets. Do not treat “A4 poster” as a finished-poster dimension: A4 describes each sheet, not the assembled artwork.
Plan margins and joining style
Home printers normally leave a non-printable border. An overlap gives you extra image to trim and makes alignment easier. An edge-to-edge method can look cleaner, but it demands accurate cuts and a printer that can place ink close to the edge. Decide this before exporting, because the choice changes the tile geometry.
Tile a PDF in Adobe Acrobat
- Open the finished PDF in Adobe Acrobat and choose Print.
- Under Page Sizing & Handling, select Poster. Acrobat divides the page and shows the required sheets in a live preview.
- Set Tile Scale for the intended physical size.
- Choose an Overlap if you will trim overlapping image areas. Enable Cut marks and Labels when those guides will help with cutting and assembly.
- Check the preview for orientation, page count and the location of the artwork. If the result is not the intended size, correct the tile settings rather than relying on printer scaling.
Acrobat’s Poster option is designed to split a single large page into multiple sheets, while preserving the original page as the source for every tile.
Create a tiled PDF from an image
- Load the completed image into Rasterbator.io (or an equivalent browser-based poster generator).
- Select the paper size you will print, such as A4, Letter or A3, and set the orientation and margins.
- Choose either the desired number of sheets or the exact finished poster dimensions.
- Select a no-crop setting when the whole image must remain visible; use a fill setting only if cropping is deliberate.
- Export the tiled PDF and download its print or assembly guide.
- Compare the finished-poster preview with the individual-sheet preview. Check the margins, labels, overlap and crop guides before printing.
These settings change the physical size of every tile, so changing paper, margins or target dimensions after export requires a new PDF.

Print every tile at the correct scale
Physical accuracy depends on the print dialog, not just the poster generator. Match the PDF page size, the printer tray and the print-dialog paper setting.
- Choose Actual Size, 100% or None for scaling, depending on the application’s wording.
- Turn off Fit, Fit to page, Shrink oversized pages, Scale to fit and any other automatic scaling.
- Print one page per sheet with the intended orientation.
- Disable booklet mode and duplex printing; both can change page placement or order.
- Use consistent paper and the same printer settings for the entire run.
“Fit” may make every tile slightly smaller. The pages can still appear to line up, but the assembled poster will not have the planned physical dimensions.
Run a test before the full batch
- Print the assembly guide first. Measure its printed ruler with a physical ruler; this checks scale before you consume poster paper and ink.
- Print one poster tile.
- Inspect its ruler or known dimensions, margins, crop marks and label. Confirm that the artwork is not clipped and that the page orientation is correct.
- If a mark is clipped, increase the poster maker’s margin and export again. Do not switch to Fit as a workaround, because that shrinks every tile.
- Only after the test passes should you print the remaining pages.
Trim and assemble the poster
Sort the sheets
Arrange pages by their labels. For a grid labeled by columns and rows, an order such as A1, B1, C1 across the first row, followed by A2, B2, C2, keeps the image orientation clear. Lay the complete grid out on a clean surface before applying adhesive.

Cut the correct edges
Follow the selected overlap or edge-to-edge method. With overlap, trim the designated edge so the repeated image area sits under the neighboring tile. For edge-to-edge assembly, trim only the indicated margins. A paper trimmer generally produces straighter, cleaner cuts than scissors.

Join from the center outward
Align repeated image details or the printed guides, then work from the center toward the outside edges. Low-tack tape, regular tape, pins, foam board or lamination are mounting options; choose one that matches whether the poster is temporary, portable or permanent.

White seams between pages
Most household printers cannot print to the paper edge. Use an overlap and trim it, or remove the right and bottom margins specified by the assembly method. Borderless printing can crop or enlarge a page on some printers, so test that mode before committing to a full run.
The finished poster is the wrong size
The common causes are Fit, Shrink, Scale to fit or a mismatch between the PDF paper size and the printer tray. Return the print dialog to Actual Size/100%, verify the paper setting and recheck the guide ruler.

Crop marks or labels are clipped
Increase the poster maker’s margin and export a new tiled PDF. Shrinking the print changes the geometry of every tile and does not solve the underlying margin problem.

The image looks blurry or pixelated
Use a higher-resolution source or reduce the finished poster size. There is no single useful DPI threshold for every poster: acceptable detail depends on the source content and how far viewers will stand from the finished piece. Inspect the image at its intended viewing distance before printing the full batch.
Colors vary from sheet to sheet
Print the run as one uninterrupted job, keep the paper type consistent, and check ink levels and printer calibration if adjacent pages do not match.
Photo-service pages do not align
When converting exported 4×6 PDF pages to individual images for a photo service, allow for the lab’s cropping and trimming tolerances. A framed grid with small, consistent gaps is more forgiving than a seamless join whose dimensions must be exact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHome printer, copy shop or photo service?
Home tiling uses ordinary paper and equipment you already own, but requires trimming and assembly. A copy shop can print a tiled file with less home labor; provide the file at the requested size and confirm that staff will print at 100% rather than apply automatic scaling. Photo services are convenient for photo-sized sheets, but their finishing tolerances make them less suitable when every edge must meet perfectly.
Whichever route you choose, keep the same three checks: the PDF and paper size match, the print dialog is at Actual Size/100%, and a single test sheet measures correctly.
