The most detailed documented peppermint swirl ornament is a small sewn-felt project: cut red and white felt circles, stitch the swirl, decorate with beads and sequins, stuff with polyester fiberfill, and add a loop. If sewing is not your preference, a ready-to-paint wooden kit takes about 30–45 minutes, while a crochet version uses super-bulky yarn and a 12 mm hook. Choose the method that matches your time, tools, and desired finish.
Sewn felt peppermint swirl ornament
American Patchwork & Quilting’s project, published June 14, 2013 and designed by Robin Kingsley of Bird Brain Designs, produces an ornament approximately 2 × 3-1/2 inches. The layered felt construction is forgiving because felt does not fray; the project source notes that its edges do not need to be turned under.
Materials
- Red and white craft felt
- Bright pink, gray, white, and red embroidery floss
- Red and white sequins
- Clear and red beads
- Beading needle
- Polyester fiberfill
- Tape and scissors for making the optional twisted-floss hanger
Construction sequence
- Download and cut the project’s felt patterns, then cut the red and white ornament pieces.
- Use the embroidery floss to stem-stitch the swirl lines on the felt surfaces.
- Add the beads and sequins with a beading needle, following the design and spacing them securely.
- Layer the felt circles and whipstitch around their edges, leaving a small opening.
- Insert polyester fiberfill until the ornament has an even, gently padded shape.
- Finish whipstitching the opening closed and attach a hanging loop.
Twisted embroidery-floss hanger
Cut an 18-inch length of white embroidery floss. Tape one end to a stable surface, twist the free length until it kinks, fold the strand in half, and let the two halves twist around each other. Knot the two loose ends together and sew or tie the folded end to the ornament.

This option creates a soft, textile ornament without beadwork, but it assumes basic crochet skills and access to a very large hook.
Buying ready-made
At Home’s Gingerbread Lane collection shows finished peppermint-themed decorations, including a 4.5-inch claydough Santa ornament and a 9.5-inch peppermint swirl ornament. Buying is the fastest route and avoids tools, cleanup, and skill requirements, but it does not provide the personalization or making experience of the other methods.

Durability and display considerations
Felt and yarn ornaments are lightweight and suitable for indoor tree display; keep embellished felt pieces away from rough handling so beads and sequins stay attached.
