A tote is the roomy, usually structured option for work, shopping, or carrying art supplies; a purse is the broader handbag category, with formats ranging from compact evening bags to crossbody styles. Choose by what you need to carry, how you want to carry it, the protection your contents need, and how much maintenance you will accept.
What is the difference between a tote, a purse, and a wristlet?
“Purse” is a general term for a handbag. A tote is one specific handbag format: Amazon Services LLC’s category guide describes it as “A large bag (but under 16") typically square in shape that can be worn on shoulder or with handle in hand; structured in shape.” The under-16-inch description is a category guideline, not a universal limit for every tote sold.
Tote
Totes prioritize capacity and a wide opening. They commonly have two handles for hand or shoulder carry and are useful when you need room for a laptop, notebook, water bottle, lunch, or painting supplies. Check whether the base is reinforced and whether the opening closes securely enough for your commute.
Purse or handbag
A purse may be small or large, soft or structured, and carried by hand, on the shoulder, or across the body. The right shape depends on the contents and the access you need rather than the word used on the label.

Wristlet
Amazon’s guide defines a wristlet as “A handbag close in shape/style to a clutch, but has a strap connected at one end of bag to be worn around wrist.” It suits cards, a phone, keys, and other small essentials when you want something smaller than a shoulder bag.

Which material is most durable?
There is no single longest-lasting material for every use. Durability comes from the combination of material, stitching, reinforcement, closures, and how heavily the bag is loaded.

For a painter, compare the protection needed by a laptop, sketchbook, camera, or paint tools separately. A light flexible bag may be easier to carry all day, while a more structured or protective design can better shield delicate contents.
How to inspect construction before buying
Look at the points that take the load, not only the surface fabric or logo.

- Seams: Check that stitching is straight, dense, and free of loose threads. Stress points should have visible reinforcement.
- Handles and strap anchors: Pull gently where handles meet the body. The attachment should distribute force through reinforced panels rather than relying on a small strip of fabric.
- Lining: Inspect for secure stitching, snag-prone edges, and a lining that reaches the corners.
- Closures: Run the zipper several times or operate the clasp with one hand. It should close without catching or separating.
- Hardware: Examine rings, buckles, feet, and hooks for sharp edges, looseness, or thin plating.
- Wheels and telescoping handles: On wheeled luggage, Consumer Reports identifies wheel, zipper, and handle construction as important durability considerations.
In a 2018 Consumer Reports survey distributed to 65,000 members, more than 27,000 members rated their suitcases. The organization reported that durability was the greatest predictor of overall satisfaction among those rated suitcases. That finding concerns suitcases, but it is a useful reason to prioritize construction over decorative details when evaluating any frequently loaded bag.

Start with the largest item
Measure the laptop, portfolio, camera, sketchbook, or other rigid item you carry most often. Add room for the case or sleeve, then check the bag’s internal dimensions rather than relying on a product name such as “large.”

Check the opening and compartments
A bag can have enough volume on paper but still be frustrating if the opening is narrow. Confirm that your largest item can pass through the opening and that dividers do not steal the space you need. For work or painting supplies, look for a bottle pocket, a protected electronics compartment, and smaller sections for items that otherwise disappear at the bottom.
Measure travel bags as they will be carried
Airline limits vary by carrier and route. Measure the complete exterior, including wheels, handles, and external pockets, instead of trusting “official carry-on” wording. Record height, width, and depth with expandable sections closed and, if you plan to use them, open.

Test the loaded weight
Put representative contents in the bag and walk with it for several minutes. Check strap drop, padding, balance, and whether the bag stays upright when set down. A larger capacity is not an advantage if the loaded bag is uncomfortable or encourages you to overpack.
Care and cleaning
- Empty every compartment and remove detachable straps or inserts before cleaning.
- Read the maker’s care label first. Do not machine-wash, tumble-dry, bleach, or apply solvent unless the instructions specifically allow it.
- For an approved surface clean, use the least aggressive method stated by the maker and test it on an inconspicuous area.
- Keep moisture away from unprotected lining, leather trim, electronics pockets, and metal hardware unless the care instructions say otherwise.
- Air-dry the bag fully before storing it. Avoid prolonged heat that can warp coatings, plastic, or structure.
- Store it empty, supported in its normal shape, and away from prolonged dampness or direct sunlight.
In the United States, textile labels generally need to state fiber content, country of origin, and the manufacturer or other responsible-business identity, along with truthful care instructions. Use those instructions as the controlling guidance when they differ from a generic cleaning tip.

- Define the job: work, studio, shopping, commuting, formal use, gym, beach, or travel.
- Select the carry method: hand, shoulder, crossbody, backpack, wrist strap, or wheels.
- Confirm the largest item fits through the opening and inside the compartments.
- Compare flexibility, weight, protection, abrasion resistance, weather exposure, and maintenance.
- Inspect seams, stress-point reinforcement, lining, closures, strap anchors, and hardware.
- Load the bag and test comfort, balance, and strap placement.
- Measure the actual exterior for travel, including pockets, wheels, and handles.
- Check the fiber, origin, identity, and care information on the label.
