Ardhanarishvara is Shiva shown as one body that joins masculine and feminine forms—usually half Shiva and half Parvati. In Alka Pande’s account, this is not a decorative fusion or a simple analogy for modern gender identity. It is a theological image of wholeness from which differentiated forms, and creation itself, can emerge.
What is Ardhanarishvara?
The name Ardhanarishvara means “the Lord, who is half woman.” Pande presents the figure as a principal manifestation of Shiva and as a visual expression of divine coalescence: masculine and feminine are present in one anthropomorphic body rather than represented as two separate deities.

Those terms belong to the vocabulary used around the figure; Ardhanarishvara is the more precise religious and iconographic name. The form should not be reduced to a claim about contemporary gender categories. Pande’s interpretation concerns the relationship between cosmic unity, polarity and creation.
Pande’s Shiva Purana creation account
Pande recounts one version of the story from the Shiva Purana. In this telling, Brahma cannot create women. Shiva appears before him as Ardhanarishvara, with the right side as the male manifestation. Brahma recognizes the generative possibility of the joined form and performs penance. Shiva then creates Sati from the left side of his body.

This is the mythic version Pande recounts, not a universally uncontested origin story. Accounts of Ardhanarishvara differ across texts and traditions, and the excerpt does not establish a complete history of those variants.
Unity before difference
For Pande, the image holds unity and polarity together. The uncreated is beyond fixed male and female attributes; creation, by contrast, requires differentiated forms. Ardhanarishvara makes that sequence visible: a prior wholeness contains the complementary principles that later appear as distinct beings and forces.

In this reading, “male” and “female” are not isolated substances competing for priority. They are complementary aspects within a single divine reality. The form therefore links the story of creation to a philosophical question: how can multiplicity arise without destroying the unity from which it comes?
Pande states the idea in a strikingly concise sentence: “Ardhanarishvara exists without desire.” The point is not that the figure lacks generative significance. Rather, the divine whole precedes the desire-driven relationships and separations associated with ordinary creation.

How the art makes the idea visible
Pande opens her essay with a translated passage from Adi Shankaracharya’s Hargauryashtakam. The hymn praises a single Shiva whose two halves carry deliberately opposed signs. Gauri is associated with sandalwood paste, while Har bears ash from the cremation ground; one ear has a beautiful earring and the other a snake ornament.

The translated passage concludes with a salutation to both forms of Shiva—“female-Shivani” and “male-Har.” Its force comes from placing the contrasts in one body. Beauty and austerity, domestic fragrance and cremation-ground ash, crafted ornament and living serpent remain distinct without becoming separate gods.

Pande’s translation reads: “The one who (in the form of Gauri) has covered one half of her body till the navel in sandalwood paste and the other half (in the form of Har) with ashes from the shamshan, the one who has worn a manohar kundal (beautiful earring) in one ear and wrapped a sarpa kundal (snake) around another ear, to that Shiva (female-Shivani) and to that Shiva (male-Har) I bow.” The wording and attribution follow the Scroll.in excerpt; they should be checked against an edition of the hymn before being treated as a critical translation.

In the narrative Pande discusses, Ardhanarishvara is the first wholly anthropomorphic presentation of Shiva. That detail matters because the concept is not left as an abstract proposition: the body itself becomes the theological argument. Viewers encounter a deity whose form makes division and union simultaneous.

The icon’s visual logic is therefore more exact than the loose phrase “half man, half woman” suggests. It does not merely combine two sets of costume. It presents a single divine subject whose differentiated attributes remain legible while belonging to one whole. The tension between sameness and difference is the meaning of the image, not a problem the image needs to resolve.
What “androgyne” does—and does not—mean here
“Androgyne” can be useful as a short description of a figure combining masculine and feminine signs, which is why it appears in discussions of Ardhanarishvara. But it can also invite modern assumptions that Pande’s account does not make. Her discussion is about Shiva’s theology, creation and iconography, not a universal statement about gender identity or a claim that all Hindu traditions interpret the figure identically.
The safest formulation is specific: Ardhanarishvara is Shiva represented through a unified masculine–feminine body, with the image expressing complementary principles and the emergence of differentiated creation from prior wholeness.
