Works by Algerian-French artist Hanan Benammar were allegedly vandalised at Kochi’s Durbar Hall Art Gallery on October 22, 2025, during the exhibition Estranged Geographies. The dispute centred on Malayalam text in her linocut work Go Eat Your Dad: some Kerala-based artists described it as obscene, abusive or anti-women, while Benammar said the piece addressed racist and xenophobic remarks and the censorship she had experienced. The Kerala Lalithakala Akademi condemned the damage and a police case was registered, but the sources available do not establish the investigation’s eventual outcome.
What happened at Durbar Hall Art Gallery
The alleged vandalism took place on the evening of October 22, 2025, at Durbar Hall Art Gallery in Kochi, Kerala. The gallery was hosting Estranged Geographies, an international exhibition organised by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi and the Kerala Department of Cultural Affairs and curated by Anushka Rajendran and Damian Christinger.
Contemporaneous reports differ on the precise details. The New Indian Express reported that a linocut print titled Go Eat Your Dad was destroyed at about 7 p.m. and identified P.H. Hochimin and an associate, Sudhamshu, as alleged participants. The Indian Express placed the incident at about 6:30 p.m. and referred to seven linocut prints. Those times and the number of works should therefore be treated as outlet-specific reports, not as a reconciled official count.

Why Go Eat Your Dad became controversial
Objections focused on Malayalam text displayed as part of Benammar’s work. Some Kerala-based artists characterised the wording as obscene, abusive or hostile to women. Those descriptions are the objectors’ claims, not an adjudicated finding about the artwork.
The reports do not provide a complete, independently verified transcription and translation of every phrase in the display. It would therefore be misleading to reproduce or define the entire Malayalam text without consulting the original work and a qualified translator.

Benammar’s stated context
As described by The New Indian Express, an accompanying note said the work highlighted racist, nationalist and xenophobic remarks that Benammar had encountered online and offline from far-right groups in Norway. Benammar also described the piece as a response to silencing, tone policing and attempts to censor her artistic practice.

The Akademi’s response
Murali Cheeroth, chairperson of the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, rejected the obscenity allegation and condemned the removal or destruction of the prints. In a statement quoted by The New Indian Express, he said: “This is not a protest; it is vandalism.” He argued that disagreement with an artwork should be addressed through discussion rather than damage.
Hochimin’s account
The Indian Express quoted Hochimin as saying, “I just removed them.” He disputed the description of his action as tearing or destroying the work and presented it as protest. His account is an attributed response to the allegation, not a court’s finding about what occurred.

What the police case established—and what it did not
The Indian Express reported that Kochi City police registered a case after a complaint by Cheeroth on behalf of the Akademi. The report listed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 329(3), 324(4) and 3(5), describing them in connection with trespass, criminal mischief causing loss and common intention.

Case registration records an allegation and starts an investigative process. It does not establish that either named person was guilty. The reports reviewed describe an initial investigation in October 2025 but do not establish a later charge-sheet, trial, judgment or final police disposition. Any present-day account of what happened after registration should be checked against current police or court records.

How to read the competing claims
| Claim or position | Who made or reported it | What can be stated safely |
|---|---|---|
| The Malayalam text was obscene, abusive or anti-women | Some Kerala-based artists, as reported in contemporaneous coverage | This is an attributed objection; the available material does not provide an independent adjudication of the text. |
| The work addressed racist, nationalist and xenophobic remarks | Benammar’s accompanying note, as described by The New Indian Express | This is the artist’s stated purpose and context. |
| The prints were vandalised or destroyed | The Akademi and news reports | Damage was alleged and condemned; accounts differ on the number of prints and timing. |
| The action was protest rather than destruction | Hochimin, quoted by The Indian Express | This is his defence of the conduct, not an established legal conclusion. |
| A criminal case was registered | The Indian Express’s report of Kochi City police action | Registration and the cited sections were reported; guilt was not established by that step. |
Why the incident matters for the exhibition
The episode brought three separate issues into conflict: how viewers interpreted language in a public exhibition, the artist’s account of using that language to confront racist and xenophobic speech, and the legal and ethical boundary between protest and damaging another person’s work. The available reporting documents those positions without supplying a final ruling on the artwork’s meaning or the criminal allegations.
Benammar said she was concerned for the safety of artists, audiences and gallery staff after the incident. The Akademi’s complaint and public condemnation placed institutional responsibility on protecting the exhibition while leaving the underlying interpretive dispute to argument rather than physical intervention.
