Begum Rokeya’s Sultana’s Dream, first published in English in 1905, imagines Ladyland: a society where women govern, conduct scientific work and move freely in public while men remain secluded at home. Its reversal of gendered power was satire in Rokeya’s time; artists working across prints, digital art, games, animation and exhibitions now use the same imagined world to examine protest, ecology, authoritarianism, migration and feminist futures.
What is Sultana’s Dream about?
The short story begins with Sultana falling asleep. In her dream, an unnamed female guide leads her into Ladyland, a country transformed by women’s education, scientific invention and collective government. Women occupy the streets, laboratories and political institutions. Men, described as physically stronger but socially dangerous, are confined to domestic quarters in a reversal of purdah.
Rokeya uses the impossible arrangement to expose the ordinary one. The story questions why authority, mobility, education and technology should belong primarily to men, while also criticizing war, militarism, industrial violence and the exploitation of nature. Ladyland’s solar power, water management and nonviolent defense make technological progress answerable to social welfare rather than conquest.

Who was Begum Rokeya?
Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1880–1932), widely known as Begum Rokeya, was a Bengali Muslim writer, educator, social activist and feminist. She established Sakhawat Memorial School for Girls and argued publicly for women’s education and intellectual independence.
Sultana’s Dream first appeared in English in the Madras-based The Indian Ladies’ Magazine in 1905. The magazine was aimed at and edited by Indian women, placing Rokeya’s speculative story within an Indian women’s publishing culture rather than treating it as an isolated curiosity. A later Bengali version circulated under the title Sultanar Swapno.
Is it science fiction?
The story is often described as early feminist science fiction because it combines speculative technology, an invented society and a future-oriented critique of power. That label is useful, but it is not universally accepted. Academic and activist Miratun Nahar told The Indian Express, “I think she wrote about reality.” Her point is that the story’s reversals are less an escape from social conditions than a precise description of them through satire.

The most accurate description depends on what a reader wants to emphasize: it is simultaneously a feminist utopia, a satirical social fable and a foundational work of South Asian speculative writing.
How contemporary artists have reactivated Ladyland
Chitra Ganesh: linocuts against present crises
Chitra Ganesh’s 2018 black linocut portfolio reworks Sultana’s Dream as a 27-scene visual sequence, a count reported by Scroll in 2024. The Memorial Art Gallery documented the portfolio and a 2020 exhibition that was shown again from December 17, 2021, to June 5, 2022.
Ganesh does not simply illustrate Rokeya’s plot. The museum says the prints connect the story to environmental disaster, gender inequality, economic struggle and geopolitical conflict. Ganesh has described the portfolio as addressing “apocalyptic environmental disaster,” persistent gender-based inequality, the power of wealthy minorities over economically struggling majorities and wars that cause widespread suffering. Scroll also reports her interest in contrasting Ladyland’s forms of governance with contemporary authoritarian politics.

Shehzil Malik: a networked feminist future
Shehzil Malik’s digital artwork draws on the story while incorporating the visual language of Indian and Persian miniature painting. Malik describes the work as “a feminist future—one where humanity uses technology to connect to nature, beauty, love and community.” Technology here is relational rather than extractive: it links people to ecological systems and one another instead of reproducing domination.
Hina Saiyada: protest translated into a game world
Ladyland or Kai’s Dream is described by Scroll as a 2021 open-world, first-person-shooter game project. Saiyada connected its premise to women-led protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens. The project was still reported as being in development by The Indian Express in 2023, so it should not be presented as a released game.
Its significance lies in the medium’s participation: an interactive Ladyland can make players navigate political space rather than only look at a fixed image. That possibility is distinct from Ganesh’s sequential prints or Malik’s single digital composition.

Isabel Herguera: three histories in one film
Isabel Herguera’s animated film El Sueño de la Sultana premiered at the 71st San Sebastian International Film Festival in September 2023. The Indian Express describes a three-part structure combining Rokeya’s story, her life and a Spanish character’s search. Mehendi, shadow-puppet techniques and 2D animation involve Indian artists and make the film’s form part of its cross-cultural inquiry.
The documented evidence establishes the 2023 festival premiere, not current streaming availability.
Specters of Sultana: a collective, diasporic reading
Künstlerhaus Bethanien’s group project Specters of Sultana approaches the text through queer feminist diaspora and anti-colonial history. Its contributors use objects, images, sounds and texts to place Rokeya’s narrative alongside questions of displacement, inherited memory and contested histories.

It is best understood as one later reception of the story, not as a single definitive interpretation shared by all participating artists.

Why the story still matters to artists
Rokeya’s central device remains adaptable because it changes the reader’s position. Public freedom, scientific authority and political decision-making become visibly gendered when the usual arrangement is reversed. Artists can therefore use Ladyland to ask new questions without abandoning the original critique: Who controls public space? Whose knowledge counts as science? Can technology repair ecological damage rather than intensify it? How do protest movements create temporary versions of another political order?
The contemporary works also show that “inspired by” does not mean “faithful adaptation.” Ganesh foregrounds crisis and governance; Malik emphasizes an ecological and communal future; Saiyada links the premise to protest and participation; Herguera intertwines biography with fiction; and Specters of Sultana opens the text toward diaspora and anti-colonial memory. Their differences are evidence of the story’s range, not a reason to collapse them into one message.

Read Sultana’s Dream first as a compact political satire, then as a work shaped by its 1905 setting. Its scientific inventions are not predictions to be scored for accuracy. They are arguments about who gets to imagine, build and govern. Reading the story alongside the later artworks makes that argument visible across changing media and political circumstances.
For a book-length introduction to Rokeya’s writing, Penguin Classics publishes Sultana’s Dream and Padmarag. The contemporary artworks discussed here come from selected museum, exhibition, newspaper and university accounts; they are not a complete catalogue of Indian artists responding to Rokeya.
