Architect and Mario Miranda collaborator Gerard da Cunha picked these five drawings as personal favourites in a 2014 Scroll.in feature. They are a guided selection, not a definitive ranking of Miranda’s most famous work.

“The bachelor apartment”
Made for the Bombay magazine Cocktail, this drawing rewards close looking. Da Cunha singled out its yellow paper and the small details that make the room feel lived in: the magazines the man is reading, the books, and the apartment’s general mess. “Man at the corner”
Da Cunha places this watercolour in a series Miranda made during a New York visit. After leaving The Times of India in the 1980s, Miranda worked as a freelancer; the United States Information Services took him to New York for a month to draw what he wanted. “Mangeshi Temple”
Da Cunha calls this a popular illustration and a straightforward, pure sketch of beautiful buildings with symbolic significance to Goa. “Village bus”
The old Goan buses Miranda travelled in became a recurring subject. Da Cunha recalled that Miranda had drawn this kind of scene since childhood because he found it amusing. Here Miranda sits beside two women; da Cunha connects the scene to the artist’s habit of observing people and exaggerating what he saw. (Scroll.in, March 23, 2014)
“Strange heaviness”
Da Cunha describes this work simply as a cartoon that expresses Miranda’s deadpan humour. The feature does not explain the cartoon’s subject in greater detail, so its humour is best approached through the drawing itself rather than a guessed narrative. (Scroll.in, March 23, 2014)

Why these five make a revealing introduction
Together, da Cunha’s choices move between carefully noticed interiors, the energy of a city, Goan architecture, and the everyday comedy of travel. That range fits the official biography’s account of Miranda as an artist who began drawing as a child, joined the Times of India Group as a cartoonist in 1953, and continued to observe and sketch everyday life as his work expanded into illustration and fine art. The selection is also personal: it records what a collaborator valued, rather than establishing an objective canon. Scroll.in reported that 10,000 works were displayed when a Panjim gallery opened in 2014; that is a report about the opening, not a current count of works on display.
