A farshi gharara is a wide-legged trouser ensemble whose fabric trails along the floor. In a personal essay published by Scroll.in on September 22, 2024, Tarana Husain Khan traces the garment through her family’s heirlooms and recounts how relatives commissioned one for a wedding during pandemic-era closures. Her account offers a vivid view of what goes into such an ensemble, but it is a memoir, not a sewing pattern or independently verified history.
What makes a gharara farshi?
Khan describes a gharara as wide-legged pajamas worn with a tunic and dupatta. A farshi gharara has a train that trails on the floor; the word “farsh” means floor. In her description, the trousers have two legs, each built from an upper section called the paat and a lower part called the goat, with embroidered trims at seams.
The ensemble is more than the trousers: it includes a kurta or tunic and a heavily embroidered dupatta. Khan distinguishes the two-legged gharara from the single-skirt sharara. She also recalls shorter ghararas gathered at the knee and finished with an ankle-length frill, which women in her family wore at home.

History told through texts and family memory
Khan writes that by the mid-19th century the gharara had become associated with aristocratic Muslim families of North India, influenced by Awadh fashions. She attributes an earlier form to Abdul Haleem Sharar’s Guzishta Lakhnau, which she describes as mentioning voluminous women’s pajamas whose hems were tucked up at the waist while walking.
She also cites Jan Sahib Rekhtigo’s composition Musaddas e Tahniyāt e Jashn e Benazir, which she says depicts tawaif courtesans in farshi ghararas and short blouses at a festival held at Rampur’s Benazir Palace in the 1860s. In Khan’s account, the farshi gharara, also called farshi pāyechā, became courtly dress by the end of the 19th century. These are historical attributions in her essay; the cited texts and claims are not independently corroborated here.

The history becomes intimate in Khan’s recollections of Rampuri embroidered bridal ghararas. In her family, silver-work heirlooms passed to daughters-in-law, and relatives travelled from Aligarh to Rampur for embroidery and stitching. Shorter ghararas and the single-skirt sharara appeared in wedding trousseaus in the 1970s. Older garments lived in a tin trunk, aired in the sun each winter, then reused or borrowed for family weddings.
Fabric, ornament and the work of making an ensemble
Khan remembers discussions of luxurious silks described as “poth, kamkhab, atlus,” alongside brocade, Banarasi and Kanjeevaram textiles. The ornament and finishing in her account include dabka, aari, thread, sequins, beads, embroidered ribbons, tassels and lachkas. These choices shaped the family’s vision of a complete outfit, rather than serving as a universal materials list.

Her cousin Mona had a strong opinion about one pairing: “You cannot, I repeat, cannot pair a brocade with a tanchoi!” That is Mona’s advice as quoted in Khan’s essay, not a general textile rule.
Two figures in the story are personal examples, not specifications. Khan says her in-laws used 20 metres of cloth for her own farshi gharara. For the later wedding commission, Mona estimated that a decent gharara would take two months to make. Neither figure establishes a standard fabric allowance or typical production time.

How the family commissioned a gharara during the pandemic
Khan’s son’s wedding was being planned while the couple worked from separate homes. They wanted a simple ceremony before an anticipated COVID-19 wave. Fabric markets were inaccessible to the family, and embroiderers were ill or had shut their workshops. A store-bought lehenga did not feel like an acceptable substitute to Khan.
Mona advised on fabrics and components. After an unsuccessful approach to a Lucknow gharara maker, the family found Nilo appi, an experienced maker. They sourced brocade and silks in Delhi, sent the material by courier to Lucknow, and followed the work over Zoom. This describes one family’s solution to pandemic restrictions, not a general assessment of remote tailoring.

The process also brought a design problem: the floral pattern on the kurta did not please the family, and attempts to disguise it failed. The bride ultimately covered it with the elaborate dupatta. Khan remembers the finished red and sea-green ensemble as magnificent overall, although Mona remained unhappy with the kurta.
What this account can—and cannot—tell you about making one
Khan’s essay explains the components, materials and decisions surrounding a particular commission. It does not provide measurements, a cutting diagram, sewing sequence or general pattern instructions. Anyone seeking to make a gharara from scratch would need a separate pattern and construction guidance; the memoir cannot be used as a complete sewing plan.
What it does show is how a garment can carry family history as well as design choices: the silhouette, the textile, the embroidered seams, the tunic and dupatta, and the practical realities of finding skilled work. Its most useful details are grounded in Khan’s specific family experience, from heirlooms aired each winter to a pandemic-era commission coordinated between Delhi and Lucknow.
