To make a data visualization glow, turn the data into light: expose phosphorescent material with UV LEDs, move LEDs fast enough to draw shapes through persistence of vision, print with fluorescent or invisible UV-reactive inks, or render emissive colors on a dark screen. Choose the method by deciding whether you need a fading physical record, a refreshed light display, a printed artifact, or a digital graphic.
Choose the kind of glow you need
| Method | What the viewer sees | UV excitation | Temporal behavior | Output | Capture or viewing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phosphorescent trail surface | Fading lines or marks deposited on a glow-in-the-dark sheet | Required to activate the sheet | Persists, then decays | Physical object | Dark-room viewing or long exposure |
| LED persistence of vision | Bars, curves, letters, or icons apparently suspended in air | Not required; LEDs emit visible light | Continuously refreshed while the array moves | Electronic display or photograph | Eye integration or long-exposure camera |
| UV-reactive print | Bright fluorescent layers or marks visible under blacklight | Required for invisible UV ink; often used for fluorescent inks | Printed and static; visibility depends on illumination | Blacklight viewing | |
| Digital glow | Bright colored points, lines, and areas against darkness | No | Refreshes continuously as a screen image | Screen, projection, or exported image | Display or screen capture |
Glow is an emphasis effect, not a data key. Keep labels, a scale, a legend, and sufficient contrast so the value remains readable when the lights are off or the exposure changes.
Path A: encode data in phosphorescent trails
For the most literal physical chart, use a phosphorescent sheet or glow-in-the-dark foil as the visualization plane. The LumiBots project describes exposing phosphorescent sheet with UV LEDs to represent local information transfer as fading luminescent trails. In a chart, each UV exposure becomes a mark whose location, color, width, or timing corresponds to a data event.

Build sequence
- Prepare the surface. Mount the phosphorescent sheet flat and place it where ambient light can be reduced. Draw or print a faint coordinate grid and labels that will remain legible without obscuring the glow.
- Define the encoding. Decide what position, exposure duration, pulse frequency, or path means. For example, map time to the direction of a trail and magnitude to the number or intensity of UV passes. Keep the mapping consistent and explain it in a legend.
- Drive the UV LEDs. Aim selected UV LEDs at the regions specified by the data signal. A microcontroller can trigger pulses, or a computer-controlled mechanism can move the light across the sheet.
- Separate activation from viewing. UV activation creates the mark; the trail is then viewed in darkness or very low ambient light. Do not assume the sheet will remain equally bright throughout the display.
- Document the decay. Photograph or observe the visualization at defined times after activation if fading is part of the message. A trail shows where and when light was deposited, not merely the latest value.
What this method communicates well
- Accumulation, movement, sequence, and recency can be seen as fading paths.
- The physical surface retains a short-lived history after the UV source moves away.
- The LumiBots paper presents this kind of system as a low-cost kit intended to let non-professionals explore collective behavior; that is a design goal described by the authors, not a current retail-price claim.
Limitations
Brightness, decay time, readability, and cost vary by material and setup; the cited sources do not establish a universal value for any of them. Test your chosen sheet, UV source, exposure distance, and room lighting together before assigning precise numeric meaning to brightness.

Path B: draw a chart with LED persistence of vision
A persistence-of-vision display uses a row or ring of LEDs, a microcontroller, and controlled motion. The LEDs emit successive samples while the array moves; the eye, or a camera using a long exposure, integrates those samples into an apparent shape. Adafruit’s MiniPOV and MetroPOV documentation describes this approach as painting with light in mid-air.
Build sequence
- Arrange the LEDs. Use a straight row for a sweeping bar or a rotating arm for circular charts. Give each LED a known position in the vertical or radial axis.
- Sample the data. Convert each column of your chart into an LED pattern. A higher value can light more LEDs, while a category can select a color or symbol.
- Control timing. The microcontroller must update the LED pattern in step with the array’s movement. Add a position sensor or repeatable motor timing if the display must align reliably.
- Move or rotate the array. The apparent image exists only while the physical motion and LED updates stay synchronized. Start with simple bars or letters before adding curves.
- Photograph in darkness. Use a stable camera and leave the shutter open. Adafruit gives approximately 2–4 seconds as a useful starting range, then adjust for motion speed, LED brightness, and the desired trail length.
When POV is preferable
POV is suitable when the display should refresh continuously, respond interactively, or appear suspended in space. Unlike a phosphorescent sheet, it does not store a fading mark after the light source has passed; the apparent chart depends on ongoing motion and emission.

Path C: print a chart with fluorescent or invisible UV ink
UV-reactive printing keeps the visualization physical while moving the light source to the viewing environment. Visualis3R documents workflows for neon and fluorescent inks as bright spot-color layers and for invisible ink that appears only under a UV blacklight.

- Create spot colors. Author separate layers with names such as “Neon Yellow” and “Neon Pink,” matching the target printer’s ink names where required.
- Import the layered artwork. Place the layered PDF in the print workflow and assign the target device’s inks.
- Combine with CMYK. Use the fluorescent spot layers alongside process colors rather than assuming a normal CMYK separation will reproduce the effect.
- Proof the substrate. Compare a preview with a physical sample; paper, coating, and ink coverage change the result.
Invisible UV-reactive data
- Add a spot-color layer named “Invisible.” Put the data marks, labels, or authentication elements on that layer.
- Enable the UV-blacklight preview. Adjust color and intensity while viewing the simulated blacklight result.
- Check a physical sample. The manual recommends comparing the preview with printed samples and testing substrates before committing to a run.
- Provide the correct illuminant. Invisible UV ink is visible only under UV blacklight, so the exhibition or installation needs a compatible lamp and controlled placement.
For a public-facing chart, duplicate essential labels in ordinary ink. A viewer should not have to find a blacklight to understand the data unless that discovery is the intentional interaction.

Path D: create digital glow with emissive color
A screen is already a light source. The p5.js textbook describes digital drawing as painting with RGB light from emitting subpixels, an additive process unlike mixing pigments. Start with a near-black background and use bright RGB colors for the data marks.
A reliable digital recipe
- Use a dark, not necessarily pure-black, background. Near-black preserves some detail while giving bright marks room to emit visually.
- Reserve color roles. Assign a small, consistent palette to categories or thresholds. Do not encode a critical distinction by glow intensity alone.
- Add restrained bloom. A soft blur or halo can suggest light, but excessive bloom merges nearby points and hides exact positions.
- Keep a crisp core. Draw the sharp line, point, or bar above its blurred halo so the geometry remains readable.
- Test at actual display size. Downscaling, compression, projection, and bright-room viewing can erase thin lines and low-contrast labels.
Esri’s ArcGIS documentation provides a dark-map example using glowing cyan points and lines and describes manual feature styling. The same principle applies to a chart: make the marks emissive, keep the background dark, and preserve ordinary cartographic or chart labels.

How to photograph a glowing visualization
For a phosphorescent or POV display, darkness is part of the setup rather than a cosmetic choice. Block stray light, stabilize the camera, and make exposure changes one at a time. With POV light painting, begin around the 2–4-second shutter range documented by Adafruit, then tune shutter speed, aperture, ISO, LED brightness, and movement speed. For phosphorescent material, record the elapsed time since UV activation because the image changes as the sheet fades.

Safety and interpretation
- Treat UV as an illumination tool. Follow the specific lamp’s instructions and use appropriate eye and skin precautions.
- Keep spectators away from exposed UV sources unless the equipment is designed and labeled for that setting.
- Do not infer equal brightness, equal decay, or equal readability across different sheets, LEDs, inks, cameras, or screens without testing them together.
- State whether a mark represents an instantaneous value, a cumulative exposure, or a fading history. Those temporal behaviors are not interchangeable.
A practical decision guide
- Choose phosphorescent sheet when the visualization should leave a fading physical trail that records activity over time.
- Choose LED POV when you need animated, interactive light in space or a camera-ready light painting.
- Choose UV-reactive print when the artifact must be printed and the blacklight reveal is part of the experience.
- Choose digital glow when iteration, animation, accessibility adjustments, or screen distribution matter more than a physical object.
